DIY: How to Make Super Strong, Suspended, Staggered Overhead Garage Shelves Using Threaded Rods

I continue to add threaded rod suspended shelves in my garage. I have a relatively small garage and I need to use space wisely. These garage shelves were cheap to build, but are super strong and practical.

I think I'm going to be doing something like this in my garage. I like how you use the 2x4s in the attic to bolt the shelves in place.

If anyone is looking for em they’re called serrated flange nuts. 3/8” nuts for 3/8 rod obviously or whatever size u choose

Looks like it will hold a lot more weight than most things you could put on it. Gaining that extra space below opens the work space and must be a lot easier to keep clean. Nice work.

Nice! I personally would add a center 2x4 brace board to the top shelf. It's been my experience plywood warps and sags with large unbraced areas.

I predrilled center holes to add another threaded rod if need be. So far, so good.

I like the use of threaded rods on shelves. Any guess on how much weight the 2x4s in the attic holding the rods can handle? I know this might sound like over kill but i would be tempted to use 4x4s just to be extra safe. I do tend to not trust lumber weight capacities for some reason. I love the idea of this shelf so i can roll my table saw underneath it.

Nice work here! Thanks for posting. Have you had any issues with the exposed ends of the threaded rods? I'd be worried about a kid running under those lower shelves and getting scratched. What would you do to finish those off? Grind them down to the nut...or maybe cap them off with a closed-end nut?

No, but we don't have young kids. You could add a cap over the threads.
