Just in time for the holidays, turn an antique store find or one of your old chairs into extra seating for unexpected guests! Many of these old chairs are starting to lose their luster, and when the webbing starts to go on the seat they're relegated to storage and forgotten. Bring them out and give them new life with this easy technique to rebuild the seat! Stable, safe, and easy. Enjoy!

The straps useful in traditional upholstery, because they provide flexible support that hard seating surfaces never give. However, they are not meant to be used this way, as a direct seat, they are meant to support some kind of cushion above them. They function like a box spring supporting a mattress. To make these chairs more comfortable and functional, especially for an adult, you can add upholstery foam cushioning over the straps, and cover with fabric, or you can try placing a premade dining seat cushion over the straps, like the memory foam ones sold in many home goods sections. If someone attempts the video project, they should also use smaller nails and stagger them, to they dont crack the frame.

In addition to what was previously mentioned about the strapping being too loose (you acknowledged that), and the jute not meant to be used as the exposed and sole seating surface, that webbing you used is not meant for seats at all. The webbing you used with the black is lighter weight for using as support when upholstering backs and sides of chairs. The jute with the red line is heavier weight and is used for supporting the seat.

Thank you for saying what the webbing is called and where to find it at the store. I'm restoring my grandmother's rocking chair for my nursery, and I pulled off the old webbing, but I want sure where to get new webbing. I'm making cushions to go on my project though.

Why did you leave it so loose? You could of gone ahead and stapled the other side too.
