DIY Hydrofoil Design: V2 Tested by Pro Kiter Ryan Parsons

Professional Kite Foiler Ryan Parsons takes the new homemade hydrofoil version 2 and puts it to the test! This video covers the changes I've made in the second version DIY hydrofoil, and we get some valuable feedback for this foil (and for learning to foil in general) from Ryan.

DIY Hydrofoil Design: V2 Tested by Pro Kiter Ryan Parsons
The biggest difference with this version 2 DIY hydrofoil is that it's designed with a flat profile. The flat profile hydrofoil allows the foil to generate more lift for its size and more stability flying. The construction is slightly more enforced than version one, with some more layers of fibreglass and carbon in critical support areas near the screw connection points, but other than that, it is identical to the previous version. This hydrofoil DIY v2 also has an increased max thickness to help with earlier lift.
The Hydrofoil weight: The foil is surprisingly light in weight even when attached to the aluminium fuselage.
The Hydrofoil Cost:
I kept the same fuselage for this foil and simply attached the new wings with the same connection points.
That kept the cost down. The cost to build this foil was just in the wings which included Cedar, Fibreglass, resin, sandpaper,
Building the wings cost less than $20.
As Ryan touches on, the larger rear wing and longer fuselage than he is used riding, helps to stabilize the foil, making this version better for beginner foilers. This size front wing of 866cm is well suited to kite foiling, surf foiling, foiling behind a boat and other however the size is a bit small for wing foiling (I plan to make a wing foiling wing soon too!)
Overall, in my opinion, this version is suited to beginner/ intermediate foilers. I had a lot fo fu riding it and could immediately notice how much easier this foil was to ride compared to the last one.
The Flat Profile Foil Design:
The flat profile in my opinion did not significantly impact the monuverbilty of the foil. I found it was still easy enough to roll and turn.
I agree that the curved foils do roll more easily, and perhaps track more with a curved rear, but the difference between theses two versions was not really noticeable. I i think I preferred this foil design above the previous design.
Plus, it's relatively easy to make for a DIY project at home.
You can make this foil in your shed with a few tools, skills and time. I think it’s a rewarding job to build your own hydrofoil and then fly it, so the next videos explain exactly how to build one similar to this (slightly improved) step by step and I will send you the DIY hydrofoil design plans if you would like to give it a go!
