How to Build a Hydrofoil: The Test - Riding The Foil For The First Time. (Video 15/15)

In this video, we finally put the new hydrofoil to the test! Does it work? Does it fly? is it fun? Does it explode? The big question I think a lot of people have is, do homemade hydrofoils work? Is it possible to make a DYI hydro foil yourself or not? Well, today we take the Flukes DIY model 3 hydrofoil for a test run and see if it works!
Listen, since this is the last video, I should note I'm not saying this foil is AS GOOD as a highly refined production foil. Some foils are built for particular ridings like racing, gliding, or pumping or early lift, high speeds, and every time you build a foil that excels in one thing, it sacrifices another. If you build a foil that goes really fast, it sacrifices early lift. If you build foil that has early lift, it wont be able to go fast. That's because the foil is a fixed design wing, that can't be changed as it flys (like an aeroplane wing changes with movable flaps to change the shape of the wing during flight with more shape for take-off and more aerodynamic shape for going fast.
As well as that, it's hard to get something that accurate built in your shed.. but what I am saying is that this foil is a lot of for fun for cruising around, it works, and you can build it and still have a blast.... meaning, for me it's as good as a bought foil, because all I like to do when foiling is go zoom around the water anyway... so if it's on my homemade foil, or on a $2000 bought foil, the result is the same for me. Take that how you like :)
The test: One thing I noticed with this foil was it is easier to ride than other foils. I was also using a new foil mast which is a bit shorter than usual at 67CM, so that could have contributed to the fact the foil felt really stable. It handled cruising around really well. It pumped, handled acceleration, and carving was nice from side to side. I can say with confidence that the flukes V3 Foil build is a success!! And you could build a foil yourself using this models plans, and it will work for you too :)

I just want to let you know that I watched all fifteen of your videos and I was extremely motivated. I've been windsurfing for sometime and have looked at purchasing a foil set up but they are so expensive. I checked your website out and watched all your videos and I built my own.. I think you did an exceptional job explaining everything. As you spoke in a few of your videos to build for what you're looking to do. I built mine larger so I can downwind or do lightwind windsurfing in my area. I can't wait to try it out. Thanks for all your information. I look forward to more hydrofoil DIY builds. I've built all my windsurf boards myself. I'm currently building a downwind, windsurf/ foilboard that can do all of it. Again awesome content keep it up.

Great series Luke. Just finished building two sets of wings. One set per your design and the second set I added 20% area to the front wing and 10% to the rear wing. Simply scaled the plans up by those percentages. Next is to build the aluminum fuselage. Hope you get stock in soon for the mast and base. Then to build a board…. Gotta get ready for some boat trials this summer 2023.

Hi, excellent video tutorials, I have watched them all. I am interested in making my own surf-foil but I have some doubts. I have seen that most of them have the front wing down with respect to the stabilizer that is normally above, I would like to know if this is really important since the one you make is inverted and for my discipline is very important the pumping. You could help me a lot by answering

Glad you like them! Yes you can change the orientation of how they attach, however it just takes some extra shaping to get a flat side of side of the Fuse to attach to the curve of the wing. it doesn't make much difference to me, but there ay be some benefits that im not sure about., i know some of the local guys prefer the stabliser on the top as it helps protect the wing form hitting the bottom, as the fuse takes some of the impact, but other than that i really dont know how much of a difference it makes,. far more important would be wing size and shape, and fuse length. Hope that helps and let me know how the build goes!
