If you don't have a stud to attach to, just create one on the interior of the closet by screwing a 2x4 into the available studs in the corners. All closets have corner studs as framing.

I used (4) 2x4s attached to the floor and ceiling. These were attached to 2x4 pieces attached to the ceiling secured at the corner studs. Used 1x2s as ledger boards (also attached to the corner studs) for shelving. Used black pipe only for hanging clothes. Closets are 7 feet wide. I have 20 feet of shelving, 12 feet of clothes hanging pipe. Two bars, high and low. Another bar for long length clothes. Bullet proof. No wall anchors. Went to home depot to get custom length pipe. I reused the already existing shelving material. The contractors really skimp on closets. Prior to the project, the closets had only one long clothes hanging bar and one long shelf above the bar. The weight was tearing the bar and the shelve down from the wall. Essentially, I added 5 feet of bar hangers and 13 feet of extra shelving. My kids love all of the extra usable space. They were both able to eliminate a chest from there rooms. Cost: $30. A carpenter would have charged $1000

ExtremeRecluse that sounds awesome!!! Good for you 👍🏼 I totally agree, getting it done professionally was not only way too expensive but still wouldn’t have been exactly what I wanted. It’s so great to do it yourself and be able to design it and tweak it to your exact need. Without the hefty price tag. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼

Thank you. You’re so sweet. I’m glad you thought I made it look easy. Lol. I was concerned That I was over complicating some things, but that’s good to know. Thanks you for the feedback. It def was easy in some ways. Overall the project took me I think a few weeks. But I was doing it on my free time. I’m sure I could have done it way faster but I wasn’t in a rush. Plus filming makes everything go slower lol. But this was a fun project. I would highly recommend having your son try it. It’s so much better than buying a premade Closet. I considered a lot of those options but I’m so much happier with something that specifically meets my need. Let me know if you have any questions. And if you actually do it send pics. 👍🏼

Biggest question: how do you measure piping correctly? And how do I order piping and where is the best place?
@richardfalig601
@richardfalig601 4 жыл бұрын
I have very limited space in my room! I have a lot of wall and one small closet. So my question is how strong is this if I was to put this on my wall. I want it to just go straight out from the wall like how they do it at places like the mall or any big clothing store. What’s killing me is after I figure out where to hang my clothes I have to figure out where to put my wife’s one million shoes! I wish I could send you pics on here because it’s hard to explain. Thanks for sharing.

hey Richard... thanks for reaching out. So glad you stopped by. I actually just did a small closet for my sister in law with industrial pipe and it came out great. I even added some small shelves for her. So it's definitely possible with small closets. I'm going to be adding the whole build on my blog this week. I honestly would have to see pictures in order to really tell you definitively whether or not the structure would hold. and what exactly you have in mind. Feel free to send me pics of the closet. My email is Shinamarie@shiwalkswithgod.com. I for sure would love to help in any way. And there are some options for figuring out where to put shoes.

Hey Jose!!! sorry for the delay.. thanks for the questions...It could definitely be screwed into the ceiling. I've seen that done before. I personally just didn't want to mess with my ceiling. but you def. could. from left to right wall it measured 92 inches. I wanted it as flush to the wall as possible so it was a tight fit. I'm going to measure the height today and get back to you. my measuring tape is in my car. I'll let you know though. Did you have any other questions. I'm happy to help if you're planning on doing your own build. Let me know. I'll try to help in any way.

I can’t find the 36” pole link can you please post it
@ShiWalksWithGod
@ShiWalksWithGod 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike. sorry for the delayed response. I had the 36' pole cute to size at home depot from a long piece. I think I had it cut from like a 120' piece. But if you don't want to go that route then here are two links for pre cut 36" pipe. amzn.to/3sKBfKB and amzn.to/3cz1AFL......They can make the cuts for you at Home Depot in the plumbing department. But not every home depot has a staff trained well for that. In my Home Depot the guy is so nice and very precise. But once I had a guy who made cuts for me and they all ended up being different lengths. it's because you have to account for the fact that when you purchase it precut from the factory the threads screw in all the way. But when they cut it for you they have to thread them really good and even then the threads only go in about a half in, so that makes things a little more difficult in terms of measurements. If you would like to. go that route I can help you with some specific measurements if you have some. for instance, if you have a 36' piece of pipe that is going to get screwed into a flange on both sides, then you will lose a half in on both sides after it gets screwed it, so you're usable pipe space now becomes 35 1/2" .... so if you wanted to cut IT from scratch at home depot and you wanted to end up with 36' pipe exactly you would ask for it to be cut to around 36 1/2" to make up for what you will lose after you screw it into the flanges. That's if you're going to tighten them all by hand. Which I used to do. until the guy in the plumbing department told me to use the wrench in the plumbing department. After I purchased that it was so much easier. Since it's stronger and can screw them deeper into the threads, you would cut that piece at 37" inches and then screw it all the way in with the wrench and end up losing a half inch on both sides. I know it's a little much. let me know if you have any other questions. I hope I didn't cause more confusion.

You don't need anchors if it's a stud
@ShiWalksWithGod
@ShiWalksWithGod 5 жыл бұрын
Yes! That is true. But wherever I didn't hit a stud, I used anchors because the industrial pipe is heavy and I wanted it to be very sturdy.

What size of pipe you're using. Is it 1/2 or 3/4 diameter
@ShiWalksWithGod
@ShiWalksWithGod 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there!... I used 1/2 inch pipe for everything. I was really. happy with that size. You could use 3/4 inch but each piece is a little bit more money than the 1/2 inch. So you can save a little money by going 1/2 inch. Unless you wanted a chunkier kind of thicker look then you will want to go with 3/4 inch. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Looks expensive! What was the total cost ?
@ShiWalksWithGod
@ShiWalksWithGod 5 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks so much. It was def meant to be less than the final cost. I ended up spending around $250 with all the supplies. The wood wasn’t expensive because it’s plywood. A better or prettier wood like an oak or cedar it very expensive. So I went the less expensive route. The pipes weren’t that much at all. The key is to have a plan, so that you don’t buy more than you need. You thinking of building something?
@dansage3665
@dansage3665 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. When I saw all your pipes, elbows and floor flanges I was like oh, boy - that looks like a lot $$$$$. I made an industrial shoe rack with some 2x8s and piping and flanges, . Came out to roughly $60...which is not a lot, but more than I intended on spending for a shoe rack, lol... The biggest pain was taking off all the gunk that it comes with out of the package. I ended up soaking it in simple green and scrubbing off all the gunk with a wire brush before letting them dry and painting them black. I was happy with the end result. And by looking at your project, you should be, too!! It looks great.
@ShiWalksWithGod
@ShiWalksWithGod 3 жыл бұрын
Yea the trick to saving is to have them cut the pipes from longer pieces like an 80" or 120" piece. The precut pipes that they have are way more money and add up quickly.
