Awesome project as always chap 👍 Top tip for when cutting threaded bar or bolts... pop a nut on them, past the point you'll be cutting, then after you've done the cut, removing the nut rethreads the end where the cut was made 👍👍

Hey, Tommy, your micro-workbench is beyond freakin' AWESOME! I love it. Sure, there are tradeoffs, but hey for getting so many tools in one little movable space, OMG. One comment: If those are rare-earth magnets... I'd recommend another method to keep the iPad in place. Strong magnets have a negative effects on radios, and you have at least two radios (WiFi + BlueTooth) in that pad. Short term it changes the reception quality by changing the antenna characteristics. If you're near your WiFi access point you won't notice. Long term it can affect things so they are permanently out of spec for where they need to be (like "magnetizing" the metal by either rubbing it with a magnet, or by having it in close proximity to a strong magnet for some time... which is in your project.) Love the idea, the implementation, and the display of the micro-workbench prowess (and your skills as a craftsman!) Ehud
@OneMinuteWorkbench4 жыл бұрын
Ehud, thanks for letting me know you're digging the MicroShop! The magnets are neodymium (I'm not sure if that's the same thing as rare earth), and I haven't noticed any ill effects. Everything seems to function as normal. The iPad and it's accessories (like the cases Apple produces) work with magnets, so I assume smaller magnets like these are generally safe around the iPad. I just read an article the other day that says the new iPad (the pro model, I think) has 90 magnets! Either way, if I ever notice anything funky going on, I'll be sure to report back in an update video. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
@ehudgavron90864 жыл бұрын
@@OneMinuteWorkbench Awesome! Yes, neodymium are rare-earth but if you don't see degradation of signal you're GTG! And yes, I LOVE the MicroShop! Brilliant :)

Hi Tommy! Nice project, congrats. Just a small suggestion, have you thought on ways to hide the big T-Nut? Maybe adding a small piece of veneer, or laminating it with a less thickness piece, it could "clean up" the look a bit when the iPad is not attached. Nevertheless, it's a nice idea and good job on the MicroShop. Cheers from Portugal

Hi there Tommy. I've been a long time follower of your channel and love what you do, thanks. I was wondering if there are any adverse effects on the iPad display from long term exposure to the strong magnetic fields from rare earth magnets. I'm sure I am being overly cautious. Have you looked into it? Any reassurance would be appreciated.
@erictheviking6724 жыл бұрын
Gumtree Terry I was wondering the same thing.
@OneMinuteWorkbench4 жыл бұрын
The iPad has magnets built into it, so I assume that small magnets like these are okay. I haven’t noticed any adverse affects, and I’ve been using it regularly for about 2 months now. The new iPad Pro is reported to have somewhere around 90 magnets built into it, and there are all sorts of magnetic holders that are commercially available for phones and tablets. I’d say it’s pretty safe at this point...at least with smaller magnets like these. I hope this helps! By the way, thanks for letting me know you’ve been following and enjoying the channel - I appreciate it 🙂

@OneMinuteWorkbench4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I inspected the video at 1:24 to see what you’re referring to, but I’m not sure what you’re seeing. Kickback usually happens when a piece is wedged between the blade and the fence. Since I have the fence pulled away in that shot, there’s little chance of anything having the bite necessary to project. Either way, thanks again for the feedback - safety should always be a discussion!

To avoid tear out when widening or drilling a new hole you can A) slowly drill in reverse for the first 16th or 8th inch B) start with a worn drill bit or C) use a piece of scrap as a guide, clamped in place

Really a bulky and heavy thing with no rotate mechanism. The presenter should have warned that magnet proximity can harm components in some tablets and using electric tape to cover bits of cut steel tape was just a bodge. AND it seems that one needs a small workshop as well! There are far better DIY stand ideas on KZbin.

Whatever happened to the fact that you should NEVER put a Magnet anywhere close to a Computer Hard drive.....Rumor said ALL contents would be deleted ??
@OneMinuteWorkbench4 жыл бұрын
Everything’s still working just fine! To put it into perspective, the iPad itself has magnets in it, and the new iPad Pro has something like 90 magnets in it...90! So I think small magnets like these are pretty safe. Thanks for bringing the discussion to the table!
@Flowmaster9854 жыл бұрын
I believe that applied to the “old” spinning hard drives. The disc surface is coated with magnetic material that the reader head arranges to store the data. A strong magnet would rearrange this again, corrupting the disc. Phones and tablets use solid state drives/storage - like a flash/thumb drive with no moving parts, so this isn’t a problem for them - at least not on a small scale; I’m not sure if they’re still susceptible to a strong electromagnet.
