I'm currently studying to become a mechanical engineer and these videos really help me to get a better understanding of what goes on during manufacturing. It feels like I am being taught by my father! Like you said, everybody starts off somewhere and since I didn't grow up around machinery these types of videos make my heart so happy - this is my passion! I am currently working on a project where we have to design a Jib crane from scratch, so seeing all the parts really helps me visualize ideas for my soon to be concepts.

I'm a novice machinist at best, was a mechanical engineer and I recall the first lesson I got in using the lathe was the rule of thumb was, if you aren't making blue chips you aren't taking a large enough cut. Exceptions, of course, being finishing cuts and clean up. I never will forget the first time I asked the shop foreman if I could use a mill and a lathe to make a prototype part for a job. He told me it was ok, but he stood right next to me until he was satisfied I had a clue and wasn't gonna tear up his equipment. Jeez, then the Union guys got all bent out of shape, but this was a prototype job for proof of design, not an actual design that I was building parts for installation and skipping over the CBA. Then after all that was over my boss, a former Corps of Engineers Captain, got all bent out of shape because I was an engineer, not a damn machinist. I looked at him and said, "Good thing I didn't have to wire anything up then, huh?" According to my boss all I was supposed to do was make drawings and sketches and someone else did the actual making of the parts. On another occasion the company was upgrading their shop equipment and afford two lathes and a couple surface grinders for sale to company employees and I bid on one of each and won them. I got them home and set up in my basement and my boss told me he better not catch me making anything and bringing it into the plant. It was a strange place to work at times.

Ok Kent, I am standing in my shop ready to get started. You said to build my own jib crane; right? Nice start I look forward to the remaining videos. I have a gantry crane design all ready for my shop, it just has to wait in line for the right time to build it. Keep up the good work. R.J.

Thanks R.J., If you want to build your own go for it LOL, but if it comes crashing down on your head it is on you literally. When you build the gantry please make a video, most of the ones I have seen on KZbin are crap.

@@WoodNMetalWorkshop the UHMW creating rotation? if not then how?
@WoodNMetalWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
UHMW is very dense and slippery add a bit of grease and the steel sleeve rotates smoothly

What was the polymer you used?. My speaker isn't clear or I just need to blow out my earwax. Does it bind at all when loaded heavy? My personal thought would be a set of 2inch ID bearings. I've done a far amount of machine tear outs and I save stuff like that for projects that I probably won't ever build. Also at some point I'd like to figure the force behind put on each end of the plastic bushing with 500lbs at the far end of the H beam. For a while I've been wanting to build one to load logs onto the sawmill and be able to position them any place on the sawmill bed. I assume it would need a base like a billboard sign and gywires from the H beam to way up the post to support a huge white oak.

You keep saying not to build a jib crane unless your an engineer, If that is so. Let me ask you this QUESTION???? Why are you showing how to build this here, when you would fully know that DIY people are out there and will watch this????
@Phantomthecat7 жыл бұрын
ssmith7100 - ANSWER. I'm a DIY'er but I'm not about to run into my shop and build a jib crane, I just like watching videos like this. It's not a how to, it's just entertaining. If every video on youtube was a DIY the first thing you'd have to do is go to Russia and crash your car...

I wanted to watch your DIY Jib Crane series but when the promo came on for your shirts I stopped watching and unsubscribed. Post interesting and informational videos and your base will follow. I did not select your video to watch ads.
