DIY Jumping Spider Enclosure

This is actually a really good idea. I'm definitely going to look into making my own enclosure as I was just speaking to someone that sells enclosures and a large size one which is a little bit bigger than the enclosure you showed was $82 in change. I kind of don't want to spend $100 on a small red box size tank. I will if I can't find any other option. But I do feel like there are other options available, the girls tank comes completely decorated and everything. . Thank you for sharing this!!

How do you stop the wood from molding?

Cork bark doesn’t mold unless there is something in the tank that is moldy. Other types of wood/bark will mold, but after about a month it cycles and the mold goes away. Just make sure to wait until that happens to put the animals in

If they have ample places to make a web they almost never make it on the lid, I have set them up like this for almost 6 years, and they always make it in or around the crevices of the cork bark, never on the lid.

The side is pretty common especially if there is something against the side to create a crevice, but if I add enough “crevices” close to the top they will go in those instead of on the lid

Most of my jumpers made their hammocks at the top and bottom of their enclosures. 😂 Many loved the bottom and the middle.

It is! Its just the cap from 1ml centrifuge tubes

When I set them up I make sure to create ledges/crevices etc for webbing as seen in the video, and I never really have an issue with them webbing the lid. They usually choose an area lower down that I created for them. I find when they are webbing the lid and walking around on the lid its because they aren’t happy with the setup and thats the most “ideal” spot for them to web with how its setup.

How does the top opening not destroy their web homes since they usually build them in the top corners? Did you have any issues?

The way I set them up, they have plenty of spots to web lower down so I never have issues with them webbing the lid. If they web the lid, they don’t have a good enough spot to setup camp elsewhere!

One question, for some reason my bold jumping spider has made three different nests around the tank and hangs out in mainly one or two, what is this supposed to mean??? Also I heard your not supposed to use hot glue in their tank because it doesn’t do well with water, is this true? (I’m a new keeper btw so I’m still learning.)

Hot glue over time does lose its “grip” when in humidity, but if its not holding something heavy I havnt had many issues. You could use a gel superglue as well, but make sure you let it air out for a few days before putting the spider in. And its not uncommon for them to make a few webs, they could move around for various reasons. If they always go to a specific web at the same time each day, then maybe it could be something to do with temperature or humidity change and they move to regulate it themselves. Its hard to know! But its definitely normal

Happy to hear I could help! A little trick with superglue is to get papertowel, and cover it in glue, and then put that between the surface and the object. It will harden like a rock and give it a good hold! I have a video where I setup an enclosure with that method on my instagram

If you have enough crevices and hiding/perching areas then it doesnt matter. The way I set mine up, ive never had them web at the lid.

Hot glue, or super glue works just as well if not better

As far as im aware any of the “normal” hot glue sticks are fine, any dyed ones or glitter ones id imagine could be toxic, but the normal clear ones I think are all the same. Its non toxic once its dry which is almost instant Super glue you want to sit in a ventilated area after using it for at minimum 24 hours (i do 48 to be safe) before putting the animals in. Superglue has toxic fumes when its drying so its important to let it air out even after its dry to clear the fumes.

Tip: put rocks on the bottom to prevent mould outbreaks

I keep the substrate dry so never have issues with mold, but for moisture loving species this tip works!

The regals just need humidity, they dont need damp substrate so because my room is humid with everything I keep I just keep them dry and put a few drops of water on the side/in its web once a week or so. Even with moist substrate for other species, Ive never had an issue with mold. Usually thats a sign you need more ventilation/airflow

The problem is their hammocks are at the top so when you feed em you break it everytime

If they are given plenty of other places to make their hammocks, they rarely make them at the top on the lid. Almost always they make them around the cork when i set them up like this. Ive never he them web the lid.

huh strange mine has two hammocks in the top of the enclosure but theres plenty of space everywhere else to make one. Ive read many places that you shouldnt get an enclosure that opens from the top like a jar cause if they do it will break it. I just assumed they make hammocks at the top.@@minibeastscanada

I cant find anything that denotes that its bad to be at the top but the way I have the enclosure setup is i have coconut Coire at the bottom with driftwood and leaves and I have a fake venus fly trap in the middle with this sort of fake web thing at the top that has lots of holes in it. Maybe its too crowded?

They make them up high, but personally ive never had mine web up the lid. You can see on my instagram where they web up in my setups.
