"They don't have emotions". A lot of insects and invertibrates have the same neurotransmitters as larger animals have. This system in the brain came to be multiple times independently in evolution. Some studies suggest that even insects like bees have emotional reactions in their brains since it serves survival. Emotions aren't some magical property only humans have. So yes, it's very likely that some jumpers can experience emotional reactions since they have a lot of the same neurotransmitters in their brains. "Don't recognize anybody". It's proven that hornets and bees can not only recognize human faces, but also remember them later. Why those parts in their brains even evolved is still unknown, we just know that they have it. So there is no reason to rule out that some jumpers have this ability too. There is anectodal evidence that some pet jumpers do recognize and bond with their owners.

@Jean-Luc Picard Great info! I loved reading that, some things like the bees I wasn't aware of so thank you. This was my first KZbin video so when I said "don't have emotions" I was wayyyy to vague. I was vague for no good reason other than I just forget that not everyone knows and that I needed to teach better than I was. I meant to imply that they won't "love" us for example. Some species of spiders HAVE been known to show love and care towards their young but for right now we don't have information on that about this species. I did state in this video that they have other emotions like pain, fear, stress when I went on to talk about other subjects of their care. So by no means do I believe that "only humans have this magical thing called emotions" or however you had stated that haha. I just didn't want to personify them by suggesting they have more than the fundamental range of emotions that they already have. I was a little too bold and vague with my statement when I should have been a little bit more specific. As for the recognition, I did have added texts to indicate that it's an argumented topic amongst the community. They may recognize what their food looks like and where their nest is at like I've said in this video but that comment was purely directed at their recognizition towards those who take care of them. But the text was there to show that some spider parents believe otherwise. I was so vague because from my experience on Instagram, alot of people would comment on my posts (like innocent posts that just show the spider with a funny audio) accusing me of believing my pet loved me like a dog loves it's human or that my spider would run to me when called for example. So I wanted to make it very clear in my video for that portion of viewers. I realize now that only I knew why I was being vague and other people wouldn't have known that I was adding that into my KZbin video based off those comments I received from Instagram. So to the viewers that took me too seriously or felt misguided when that wasn't my intention- I truly apologize for the miscommunication. For my first time ever making something like this, I realize there's going to be issues with it but that's nothing that can't be worked out in the comment section, right haha. As more research is done on spiders and other insects we will learn more too! Thanks for watching ❤️

Jumping spiders are so much fun to take care of, even if they're not being kept permanently. I caught one whose abdomen was shriveled from being hungry, and I fattened that spider up before letting it back out. It's always a very heartwarming experience.

😊I love the jumpers. And I have great fear of spiders, but watching videos has helped me not to fear them as much as I did when I was young. My house has cellar spiders and daddy long legs, and other species. I won't kill them only move them outside. A couple of years ago I found a black with green fang covers? Had white dots on abdomen. Thought it is/was a male. Not sure what species. Kept him for a week then put him where I found him. Didn't want him removed from breeding. Still can't have any of the large species walk near me. Love watching the big orb weavers making the webs. Since they catch and eat the pest bugs, I leave then alone.

Nice video! Maybe I can help you or others with my experience on zebra jumping spiders. If someone selects a glass container that is very old 20+ years, their spider will find themselves severely challenged when attempting to climb and will fall often, with or without condensation. Reason for that is what many people do not know, glass is a super cooled liquid which the more time you give, will let gravity do its thing and create a near frictionless surface if no detritus is present, you can observe that on 100+yro homes in a more obvious way as the glass panes will have a triangular shape, being thinner at the top and thicker at the bottom. Also, for my spider specifically, I have observed multiple times that it can burry itself in very fine(dry) dirt to hide or even sleep, especially if it can't reach its cute sleeping bag. They will also make beds in my curled up grapevine bark if it is in dark/dry areas. My substrate is primarily a layer of just regular charcoal which is insanely good for springtails proliferation and humidity distribution, then i covered with dried leaves or bark a very thin layer. Unlike popular belief, let me break your dreams, it will take time and thousands of springtails to keep mold in check, especially if you like to mist the enclosure which can within a day create an explosion of mold without a solid springtail population already present. Like the lady in the video I can confirm a moldy environment will massacre any jumping spider forced to live in it. Lastly I put some bridges of different type of wood that are not huge. I have a little spot with water filled with salvinia cuculata and green water in it, so that if it overflows it will immediately water only the moss around it, keeping the rest of the 10 gallon container dry for the spider's good health. If the spongy moss type doesn't catch all, it will flow down directly into the layer of charcoal to benefit the health of the springtails which in turn feed the spiders. Due to overabundance of food I have not witnessed female to male predation yet. In the garden they will go for spider mites and other mites which I welcome. I know you may get curious and what to feed it but I would stay away from anything with some kind of hard shell. To give you an exemple, even a grown wolf spider can fail to kill an ant, a tiny beetle, an isopod, earwigs, just go out in your garden and watch them in action yourself or test them 🤣 I only breed them to have more pest control in my garden and give them a headstart when winter ends, but there is nothing wrong with owning those cute little guys for fun, they are certainly very entertaining to watch if you have good eyesight and you didn't pick a miniscule jumping spider like mine. If you only have a very small type of jumping spider and want to buy an enclose but unlike me you don't want the spider babies all over the place, you can keep them inside with the help of those makeup cotton pads, cotton balls, and my personal favourite being Gauze which is the thing you use to wrap a booboo made to be pretty breathable material, all of those options can be cut and glued to your liking. If the cotton decomposes on you, you have lived for too long and need a new hobby bro! Good luck to you guys! 😎

You have an excellent topic for a KZbin channel! I'm a behavioral ecologist. I studied wolf spiders for my dissertation, and you are correct about each having an individualized temperament. Even animals within the same species display a spectrum of behaviors. Have you considered pursuing spider behavior in graduate school? I was chatting with a guy at the pet store about getting a jumping spider. I was told by him that he heard most ppl who have got one as a pet have all died within 2 months or so of having them. They would eat and molt but were soon found dead. I asked if he looked into why this was, aside from human error caring for one of these cute species of spider. He had not done any research on his end but think either human error, or keeping a spider who may become too stressed perhaps from constant human contact. I am still interested in persuing as a pet and wanted to find out for myself.

I always suggest buying jumping spiders from a breeder because they are with humans their entire lifespan as opposed to wild caught jumping spiders. A lot of wild captive jumping spiders will die within a few months of having them just as you said. They get too stressed, can be too skiddish and hurt themselves. I have had a lot of people on Instagram send me messages about how theirs isn't eating or wasn't doing too well and most of the times their spiders would be from the wild or I could tell they were doing something wrong that coudd be attributing to their stress/lethargy. I personally have never had a jumping spider die within two months though but I breed mine and if I were to purchase some, I get mine from breeders. I find that jumping spiders from breeders will do the best and then of course just people having the proper research will go a long way with the longevity, health and care of their spooder. Sometimes breeders lie about the spiders age and will send old ones. Those might die within a few months of having received it because elderly spiders might be put into too large of a home because their human was informed wrong. These older spiders have a harder time producing their silk too which can cause issues if they can't build their hammocks for example. A lot of adult spiders will only eat once to every two weeks at a time. Or won't eat right before their molting. Some spider parents have put their enclosures directly in front of windows and made the inside get too hot. These are just a few things I can think of that I've heard first hand happen to some people that had spiders pass away quickly after getting them. Thank you so much for doing your research and considering the possibility of having a jumping spider and of course for watching my video! I hope your comment and my response will help others out there as well.

@@tbrowntracyj hello and welcome, I can't say for sure about crayons but I do believe that they make them pretty non-toxic nowadays, so I don't see any issue with them. Are you using them for decoration or are you trying to color-in decoration using the crayons? Either way, I don't think there should be a problem. I would say just go with your best judgment. As far as the aloe goes, I'm pretty sure that most succulents are going to be fine around jumping spiders. As far as jumping spiders eating the aloe plant or using it as a way to stay hydrated, I am not sure if that is safe for them or a sufficient source of water. But jumping spiders should be fine around succulents and can even hoard off against other pests with their presence.

I am getting a spider really soon so I need someone that is like a professional to answer this quick. Can you move your jumping spider to a container everytime you feed it?
@jumpingspooders4930
@jumpingspooders4930 7 ай бұрын
If that is how you plan to feed your spider, you could. It just would be difficult because not all the time will the spider be in an easily accessible place in their current enclosure or sometimes they might be in their nest (I would not recommend forcing them out of their nests to prevent stress). I personally would try to feed the spider in their enclosure but depending on what kind of set-up or routine you're trying to do, then I can understand. It can be kind of hard to judge exactly when a spider wants to eat. Even though their abdomen might be smaller to indicate that they are hungry, they still might not eat. When they do suddenly latch onto their prey, it could take them quite a long time to be finished. So if this other feeding container is secure so they can't escape and still have ventilation, then that could work so that way you don't have to wait for when they're done eating to move them back into their enclosure. So as for your question, yes you can do that. I would just monitor your jumping spider and make sure that doing it this way is something that isn't putting too much stress on the spider. Sometimes transporting the spider or moving them around too much might make them behave in a "scared/frightened" way. When they are frightened, they might be less likely to eat because they don't want to put themselves at risk. Congratulations on your new spider that you will be getting soon! I hope this answers your question or gives you some ideas!

@jumpingspooders4930
@jumpingspooders4930 Жыл бұрын
This will not work because spiders don't actually "eat" the mealworm but instead they kind of "suck" their insides through the puncture they make with their fangs. Cutting up a mealworm will not be appetizing for a spider and it would most likely result in losing the majority of the mealworm insides anyways. Sometimes they may eat a freshly dead prey if you make "movement" with it by holding the worm with tweezers and jiggling it around. This would essentially trigger the spiders instinct to attack it. But I would not cut up a mealworm for younger or smaller spiders. I would choose a different type of insect to feed your spider until it gets bigger or older. There are regular blue bottle cap flies or fruit flies if they're they're young. Sometimes you can get away with the miniature crickets as long as you remove some of their legs so they don't fight back and harm your spider. I hope this helps! Good luck 🤞

@@aranhavampira when I breed my spiders, I only put the female into the males container just until the deed is done so to speak haha. She usually spots him out immediately and goes to terrorize him to make him court her. I only had one time where the female did not have any interest with the male. I just make sure my females are well fed beforehand haha.

hello ! good video ! i'm looking to buy a jumping spider for the first time ! i keep mealworm for my ants and i have a lot , so i was wondering if it's was needed to feed my jumping spider different type of meal every time ?
@jumpingspooders4930
@jumpingspooders4930 Жыл бұрын
No, you did not need to feed your jumping spider a different type of meal everytime. It is only suggested/recommended so that their nutrition is mixed up. You could occasionally switch it up for the same effect. Jumping spiders can be very enjoyable so you'll have to drop back in if you decide to get one! Thank you!

I am wondering does a zebra spider count as a jumping spider and you said not to have lids that are on the top so can I not use a soup container
@jumpingspooders4930
@jumpingspooders4930 4 ай бұрын
@@Democattttt if you mean one of those cylinder shaped soup containers, then it would not be best unless you were able to go without substrate and use the lid as the bottom of the enclosure. So it would be an upside down soup container. So I think it could work! 🤗 Also I used to actually have a zebra jumping spider. I found her on my car and she was very observant. Loved watching me and was incredibly clever.

A lot of times when I get my spooder out to crawl around, they'll begin to eye me up and crawl towards me instead. A lot of times I gush with love because it makes feel like my jumper is coming towards their momma despite being free to wonder where ever they please. I know deep down that I'm honestly just this tall "tree" that's great for hiding places/climbing and that's why they'll want to crawl towards me but it still makes me feel good in those moments ❤️ Other times, just seeing my spider look towards me when I walk into their room makes me feel special because I know they see me and acknowledge me. My Cutie is older now and I walk her around the house on my finger showing her my fake plants and fun macrame decorations. She definitely doesn't care about them they way I care but it's those little moments I have with them where I can't stop thinking about how these "scary" creatures have changed my view on spiders as an entirety. Good luck on your jumper journey!

Male or females will have the same indicators even in the wild. Male have thicker larger two front arms and if they're an adult, then their abdomens will be smaller. Sometimes there will be color differences as well but this depends on the species that you find in the wild. 🥰

What kind of light?
@jumpingspooders4930
@jumpingspooders4930 Жыл бұрын
Don't use anything that can produce too much heat as it can warm up the inside of your enclosure too much and don't set them too close to windows as the sun can have the same affect. LED lights work great (LED lamps, strips etc). Unless you have a particularly bright room, then no light may be necessary.

@jumpingspooders4930
@jumpingspooders4930 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't believe that it is the best idea. Depending on the species that you could get will depend on how frequent they need their enclosures misted. As they get older they don't need to eat as often but they could still dehydrate from not getting enough water. Leaving water dished/bowls/sponges in their enclosures isn't always the best solution to that problem as I would fear drowning and some spider enthusiasts fear bacteria on the sponges.

You can’t call them intelligent and then follow that sentence with “oh but they don’t recognize you or anything haha!” Like yeah.. they do. They have personalities and will form a bond with their owners when they trust you
@jumpingspooders4930
@jumpingspooders4930 Жыл бұрын
They are intelligent in their own ways that separate them from other spider species. Being intelligent and not being able to recognize its "owner" does not mean that those two statements shouldn't follow one another. A jumping spider can be intelligent within its species and still not have the capacity to recognize the person that handles them and feeds them. I have had jumpers for many years and I can say that I don't feel like my jumping spiders bond with me or recognize me. They tolerate me and they notice me when I walk in the room but I do not mistake that for bonding. That would be me personifying the spider. I've done a lot of research on both sides of the argument before making my video and I would say that this topic is okay to be debated because of all the research that has been done on the subject, there is still more research to be done. For all I know, a scientific study could be revealed tomorrow to prove me wrong. I would be more than thrilled to learn if my spiders are actually bonded with me. When my spider wants to crawl to me out of everything else in the room I do not take that as a sign of it loving me. I take that as it taking an opportunity to see me as a potential hiding place to make a new nest. I also would not take that as a sign of trust: some spiders I have had for their entire lives never "trusted" me. We are a potential predator and the vibrations that they feel when on our skin makes most of them uncomfortable. Over time they can get used to the vibrations not equaling potential demise but again, I don't see that as a form of trust or bonding. This is based on my research and on my intensive personal experience with jumping spiders of all temperaments. I appreciate you taking the time to view my video.
