This build was pretty high on the request list as well as one I've been contemplating for a while. I had no intentions of doing it just yet, but this little jumping spider made its way home on those plants. I knew this would be the perfect opportunity to keep one and show you how I would do it.
I wanted to keep it simple, easy, and beautiful design to showcase the spider. Other than the substrate and plants, I've included links to all of the materials used to make the enclosure (non-affiliate links) for your convenience.

I FINALLY did a vivarium for a Jumping Spider! What do you think? If you're curious about any of the materials I used, then check out the video description. I have a bunch of helpful information in there and links. I gotta say, I'm really enjoying the spider! I'm very surprised at just how personable it is for such a small creature. Enjoy the video and have a great weekend! EDIT: See how this spider is doing now! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGK1kpVpebaCma8

When I was in college there was a certain bench on campus that I used to sit at and draw all the time. A little jumping spider lived there, and without fail every time I was there it would come out and sit on my sketchbook and look up at me. It didn't bother it that I would continue to draw around it. It would just crawl around the page, maybe hop onto my leg or bag. It was like it knew I wasn't going to hurt it. I miss my little buddy.

They're so curious. My little one has a climber/slide in our backyard. It's a jumping spider magnet. If you hold your finger out they'll jump on you. Some of them will sit for a minute others will jump on and off as fast as they can. None of them usually just straight up run away. At the moment there are six TINY babies on it. I have to check every day and remove any adults I find to try and keep them from being eaten. The adults are really cool to watch, but I would rather give the babies a chance to live. I've watched one of the babies for over three weeks now. The new babies have only been there for a few days and are barely bigger than a dull pencil tip.

Just as an FYI, for a bold jumper you're going to want something a bit closer to the size of an Exo Terra Nano Tall (8x8x12) for long term keeping. Plenty of cross ventilation is going to be your best friend with keeping arachnids. Very cute little box, though. It's just that jumpers utilize a lot of space, and having something with more options for traversing the space, i.e. more anchor points like twigs and leaves, help for their enrichment, as they are quite smart little spoods.

I thought so too, this is good to know as I want to get one myself. Do you know if they require a full spectrum light? I’m assuming so as most animals need light to keep them healthy but I’m not sure
@freerider8737
@freerider8737 2 жыл бұрын
@@shadowbailey depends on your set-up man. I have about 20 spiders that all utilise natural light through a window then I have some abit further into the room that I set up lights for. Most spiders prefer the dark and things like jumping spiders, huntsman, wolf spiders use eyesight as a main way of hunting and they work alot better during night time.
@KaireDownin
@KaireDownin 2 жыл бұрын
Came here to say all that. I’m actually a little surprised Tanner didn’t look a little further into care sheet sites and learned to do it right the first time. Ventilation is important and that moss is gonna be dead in two weeks. Plus, these guys love flies and adding a fly to that enclosure is gonna be a pain in the butt.

nah it is a perfectly fine enclosure. any taller would be pointless, also note that a larger enclosure would mean more hiding places for the food, and it would make it more difficult for the spider to find food.
@shadowsexotics8827
@shadowsexotics8827 2 жыл бұрын
@@benlee7565 That's extremely incorrect. Jumping spiders will use any size you give them and the bigger the better, they're intelligent if not one of the intelligent invertebrates, one in Birmingham university has been taught to jump on command. They need a large spacious enclosure with lots of height and foliage. They are also one of the best hunters in the invertebrate world, they are more than capable to tracking down prey in their enclosures, thats whats their massive eyes are for. I'm a studying entomologist and also breeder of invertebrates , mainly jumping spiders and they all have a minimum of 30 x 30 x 45 bioactive exo terras and my females on average live over 3 years. They will use every single inch of their enclosure. too big of an enclosure is a old myth spread by collectors to justify poor husbandry.
@benlee7565
@benlee7565 2 жыл бұрын
@@shadowsexotics8827 Depends on what jumping spider, I too studied biology and breed invertebrates, and I personally think because of their adaptability they can fair well in a range of enclosure sizes, and just depends on your “keeping style” if it makes any sense. From most jumping spiders I’ve kept though, though my anecdotal observations many have the tendency to perch high and rarely utilise lower quarters of enclosures. They will use every inch, but will probably frequently use only certain parts of the enclosure. Especially if the female is entering brooding cycle, all they need is a few large meals and they’ll be busy brooding for a full month.
@rat_dragon
@rat_dragon 2 жыл бұрын
Gotta say, I think this is the simplest, easiest build so far! I've kept various spiders throughout the years, one of which was a rare female Apache Jumping Spider, and I did about the same thing. Bought 2 containers; one similar to the first you showed and the other, a mini Exo Terra I believe it's called. Cleaned it, scaped it with mosses, twigs, a small vein plant and added her in. She was already very large and pretty old yet lived for another 6 months happy and healthy! The build now belongs to native isopods who reproduced the first month of having them :)

@benlee7565
@benlee7565 2 жыл бұрын
Notice in the time laps it is only active in the upper 1/4th of the enclosure? If he made the enclosure any taller it is pretty much pointless. Although a wider enclosure could give it more space to move, it is no means necessary to keep the spider nice and healthy.

@@benlee7565 I have seen bigger enclosures. Plus I am pretty sure the spider would rather be in the wild with all the ability to go wherever. I have to agree it should be bigger. I have had friends that have made a large one they like to jump and are often quite playful.

Mine (4) all have taller tanks with a vent on the top, it opens about an inch and a half down, this is important as most jumpers build their web in the top corners and opening some of those tanks would constantly disturb them.

You clearly have some misconceptions about jumping spiders. They use precise jumps for Hunting mainly. They occasionally use jumping to move from one object to another but thats it. This setup though is just too small for their natural behaviour of exploring their perimeter.

When it jumps it will be aiming to land on the top or walls of the enclosure, they don’t collide randomly with things

Love the "dramatic reenactment"! I used to keep a couple jumping spiders (very similar to P. audax; I had P. regius) and I work in a lab that studies and houses spiders, and they are such interesting little critters. Here's some fun facts that I hope will help you out in caring for your little guy! I think you actually have a male spider, since females tend to have rounder and bigger abdomens. They also appreciate more horizontal enclosures (as others have mentioned) so that they can jump around, and in a similar vein need a little more room to move around since they are active hunters and explorers (which others also mentioned in terms of upgrading him to a bigger enclosure). I also noticed that jumping spiders like to have a little hidey hole to escape to once in a while if they get startled or feel threatened, and will make a little web nest in it to sleep or hide, so it might be nice to include a small cave-like area in your build (maybe some rocks or those botanical pods you have). It's also good that you are housing him in a slightly humid vivarium, as they need some humidity to properly molt to grow -- if they get stuck in their molt they will sadly perish. I hope you can incorporate some of these tips for your little guy! Looking forward to the next build as always! :)

I had a female bold jumper that lived with my tokay gecko for ages. She was just too small or too much trouble to hunt. I loved watching her snooze in her little spider hammock and hunt the evil fruit flies and fungus gnats that show up from time to time. Such cool spiders.

Great vid! I love jumping spiders. . . the way that they move is adorable. I'm also kinda vibing with the editing style in this video. I'm no expert, but I can say that I loved the lighting, as well as the more personal approach to the narration. Gave it a really lighthearted atmosphere, which matches the jumping spider perfectly! Good job as always, keep it up!

Jumping spiders don't actually need a bigger enclosure as they choose territories where they make their web and stick to the one spot. This is the same for a lot of spiders.

This is indeed too small for a jumper. They are known to utilize much larger spaces for hunting. Even for one who sets up in the corner, they will still utilize the space. These spiders have incredible eyesight and stunning cognitive skills, so navigating larger spaces is like their bread and butter.

This is a very good looking display for a small plant but not good habitats for a living, moving creature like a curious jumping spider. The myth that a mantis will eat her partners head after mating came from abnormal behavior observed in those stressed and captive in labs. I agree with the other comments - the containers you keep your bugs in are much too small.
@ErebosGR

Sexual cannibalism is not a myth. It may occur more frequently in captivity, but it also depends on the females' diets. Well-fed females are less likely to cannibalize their mates than hungry ones.

@@ErebosGR yes, that wasn't the best way for me to phrase it. The myth part is the idea that it's a normal/frequent behavior

Ridiculous and overkill for such a small spider. You’ll barely see it and just have an empty looking display. The whole point was to also be able to see it easily.

A someone who has raised jumping spiders for years, you are completely incorrect. Too large of an enclosure and they can have trouble finding their food during feedings, along with you never not being able to see them in a large enclosure.

Not a joke, not a pet and not in an enclosure. It just happens to live in the room with us. I'm saying that its natural movements take it over a large area. I'm sure Tanners spider would prefer more space.

All bad for the jumper Do not keep him in that it's to small!!! The glue is not good for him unlesss you let it set for a week... you should be useing aquarium silicone. You should be doing your research before getting into a project like this it is unfair on the spiders life.
