We couldn't find any weights during this quarantine period to work out at home, so we decided to make our own kettlebells using concrete and various balls.

Put sand in a frying pan, then use a funnel to put the hot sand into the PVC and you won't get kinks in your PVC pipe.

Great job, I love it. How did you achieve that flat finish on the bottom of the bells? Did that occur naturally from the weight of the concrete? Or something else you did? Thank you!

Thanks ! That occurred naturally from the weight of the concrete. As you pour the wet concrete it flattens the bottom of the ball.

Thanks. We used the rope for that. But you can use steel cables or running some screws through the pipe that stick out and that will help secure it. Hope this helps.

Anyone else just searching this: check on cheap plastic watering cans. Google tells me one gallon of concrete weighs about 20 pounds and you can find 2 gallon plastic waterers.

Thank you for this! I was able to make 2 mini basketballs into 2 12 pound weights. I did use a T bracket for the pvc specifically for kettle bell swings. I happen to have a 3.5 foot metal pipe that fit over the pvc so I can essentially crest a weighted barbell. I ended up using about 1/3 of a concrete bag for the pair. I found that the 24 in circumference balls yielded 12lbs. Do t know if this a good formula or not, going to try it again with volley balls. I’m even thinking about using bowling balls, but I like the outer portion being rubber and probably more durable. THANK YOU SO EFFIN much for this. I’m in the road and weights are expensive.

What did you weigh the 30lb ones at when the cement was wet?

About 31.8lbs when wet, but the weight does not vary too much from wet to dry. They weight exactly 31.6lbs now. So just 0.2lbs less

Quickrete or cement? Also, if using Quickrete, why not fill the ball with it and just add water? Thank you for your feedback.

It was Quickrete. Good point, but since we used ropes for support, we didn't want to have to push them down the concrete.

You cant fill it with the cement mix and add water, that will not work. Cement has to be mixed properly before being used. If you use Quikrete try to get the green bag one, that has fiber on it which makes it more resistant to cracks and impacts.

thanks ! the cord is to better anchor the pvc tube to the concrete so it doesn't slip out after extended use of the kettlebells. it's just a regular nylon cord. we could've used screws or small metal rods but it was easier to do it with the cords

Haven't dropped them hard, but guessing that yes it would crack so we don't recommend dropping them.

Does the black spray paint wear off over time?

It's been a month using them daily and so far so good. The paint has not come off. We used plasti dip, which is a rubber coating and gave each handle about 4 thick coats.

How did you seal the cut made for filling the concrete??

We used clear gorilla glue (superglue) and overlapped one cut over another

You could also stitch it with some leather. That would look pretty tight, actually.

They are about 6in wide and 7in tall. The bigger ones are 7in wide and 9in tall. Hope this helps

No, we did not. It was not necessary. But you can put sand while you warm them up so they keep their shape better
