DIY KINTSUGI

What do you do when your project "fails"? Fill it with resin and dust it with gold! When one of our concrete slabs cracked, we used the opportunity to try something which neither of us had done before. Kintsugi is the art of repairing a broken item (mainly pottery) with lacquer and gold dust. While this was not exactly the 'proper' method, it was fun to give something new a try. There was a lot of room for improvement and I'm looking forward to giving it another shot in the future.

What I like most of this video over Ben's one is that it actually takes the "Kintsugi" philosophy of aknowled the beauty of "broken" things. It's such a beautiful project by itself, but it's even more beautiful cause you gave life to that crack that many would've thought was a flaw or something that ruined the table. Really amazing project :)

Luis Ramírez I was thinking much the same thing. I first learned of Kintsugi while watching a video on Japanese furniture making and fell instantly in like with the premise. Since then, I've found a slew of old, broken things to resuscitate. It's been absolutely joyous to present those things to friends as gifts, explaining the concept in the process.

I saw your recent interview, and the comment from the guy who said you weren't even pretty or talented? NOT PRETTY???????? She is absolutely adorable! Beautiful, goofy, great personality, and beautifully simple designs. If I had room to put them, I'd try to recreate all of her work I've seen so far. your designs may be simple, but they have their own special charm and just about anyone who wanted to could use your videos as a teaching tool to try to recreate them. Thanks for the heads-up on sprinkling the gold dust on top instead of mixing it in. This will use a lot less gold dust, and you're right, it does look better. Sub'd for sure. Can't wait until I get to see the next one.

I really am not excited about working with concrete, mostly because it's bulky heavy and messy, but the end result is very compelling. Every time I see you and/or Ben work with concrete to create something cool it makes me want to overcome my reservations and step out of my comfort zone. This gold vein effect you created running through the damaged slab was genius. Great way to save a project that would have otherwise been a pain to get rid of. Also I really enjoyed listening to your interview on Waylight Creations Podcast. Very interesting back story.

Jessie, I came here from HomeMadeModern. How do you get a light concrete and what concrete mix did you use? In Canada, I can only get Quikcrete 3000 locally.

heya andy, i used quikrete 5000 because it's the most readily available here and the least expensive. i'm not a concrete scientist but it is my understanding that the number relates to the psi. i don't think it should matter what kind you use

This is a great technique. The other term for Kintsugi that I've heard is Wabi Sabi.

thanks, phil! as i understand it, kintsugi refers to the lacquer/gold repair while wabi sabi is a more broad term for finding the beauty in the imperfect. kinda describes all of us, don't you think? :)
