Diy koi pond covers keeping the water as warm as you can without heating

Koi pond cover is now on as temp hit 16 so I put them on last weekend so they have been on 6 days and pond has been at around the 17 mark all week give or take a -0.1 or +0.1 or a bit so the little sun we have had this week has put some heat in and the covers have kept it in the water over night

Thanks James still wish I did not have to do it as with all who cover you want to see your fish but it gives you a way you can open it up for a time without to much hassle. Martyn

16c Sunbathing weather in Manchester 11c Here today but I've had my covers on over a week now trying to hold off till I turn heater on 😭 But all you guys on KZbin have gives me lots of ideas for winter projects thanks for updates 👍

How do mate you been missing for a bit yes the covers work well have just been making a cloche to go over the veg filter this morning will video the fitting of it over the filter this weekend for next weeks video out today 15.30 moving the koi fry indoors Mags stars in it her big internet debut Martyn

Mate its been no better down hear the last two days pond was 16.3 today lowest its been cover on so starts the winter drop best air temp today was a little over 15 for about an hour that's all Martyn

What do you use as the bars mate

The bars are made from CLS (4" x 2") usually finishes at 94mm x 44mm Jewson

I move my air stones off the bottom a foot and a half but its still going to pull water to it as the flow of air rises but to a lesser extent the less you move the water on the bottom the better so slow the bottom drain pumps down and shift more speed onto the skimmer or leave as is you don't need so much flow round the pond if you are not feeding. we don't have the kind of winters you have but still prep for one as it has been known to happen and this could be it Martyn

Maybe someone can help me out. I'm in Pennsylvania. Brutal cold winter's. I have a 5k gallon pond 4' deep. 2 bottom drains with 10" air diffuser and 2 skimmers. Should I leave the skimmers going? And should I move my air diffuser up so I don't disturb the warmer water at the bottom? Thanks

Brian I would turn skimmers of move air diffuser up in water but I would have a small floating heater cheap on ebay just to keep one stop of pond from freezing and don't forget covers 👍

@@barrykoikeepercooper8052 well I shut off my bottom drains. Drained my settlement chamber. My skimmer and stream is still running. I covered the pond. But I'm actually worried about blocking out the sun. The cover is a tan tarp. Do you think that will be an issue? Lack of sunlight throughout the winter? Thanks

Sunlight no as long as you keep checking them but you need a gap in the cover to let the bad gases escape total air tight cover can kill them 😕
