Make sure to take note of any potential quick upgrades you can make while it's open, it may come in handy one day. I took my mom's laptop apart for cleaning a couple years ago, a whatever-generation dual core from Intel with 4gb ram and running windows 8 from a friggin hdd, so I quickly found some sodimm locally and a 500gb ssd and threw those in as well. Could have upgraded the cpu as well, since it was socketed, but the only mobile quad core I found in the entire country - that had a somewhat similar wattage - was about $150 so I gave it a pass. Installed win10 on the new ssd, and with the memory now maxxed out at 8gb it still runs smooth today!

The only consequence of removing the screws might be losing them, but you can avoid that by storing them in a box or glass. By the way, the casing and motherboard screws are most likely different lengths, so you need to separate them. Just telling in advance, in case if you wanna take the motherboard out

Usually, you need to remove the thermal interface to access fans to clean them so that you can combine those processes. But new ones have liquid metal, and generally, you cannot do this at home (I do not recommend it, at least). Also, installing a thermal interface after removal in the same place without reapplying the thermal agent is a bad idea.

Another note as to why keep the fan still when using compressed air. Spinning fan is a generator. You might blow something in your laptop doing that. So better keep it still (if you can remove it it's better) sometimes. Overheating problems arise even if you do this and that's because the fan gets slower due to no oiling for long time. Get a syringe and pump the axe with some machine oil to lossen the fan and voila. Hopefully it helps other people too

1) first 2) assumption: laptops are designed for cooling, but this assumption fails because iirc there was a toshiba satellite (model L-500?) laptop which had the igpu die on the mobo and the copper heatpipes went from the fan to the cpu to the igpu (with no direct connection to the singular fan), which led to igpu catastrophic failure

Off topic question: Is it possible to have a removable bios chip mod to a laptop? The chip will have the same specifications as the existing one and it will be relocated elsewhere inside the laptop by extending it via wires to each contact (it’s like modding a ps2 with a chip style). I’m doing this as an experiment and I don’t care if the laptop gets totaled. It has already served us well for over a decade and times have now changed. Some context: Guinea pig in question is a Toshiba satellite c855 with an i3 3120m and I’ve managed to unlock the factory bios BUT I bricked the bios after pushing the settings too far and for some reason the chip dosen’t respond to my CH341 programmer right now. I’ve tried to bridge pin 1 to ground n found that the laptop still turns on but it won’t post (I think you know this too). So it got me thinking of doing said mod because I plan on tweaking the bios further and it’s gonna be a pain to reflash it each time I find a limit. Having a removable one would make it easier for me.

Can i ask you advice mr the greatest technical that ever live My acer nitro 5 is always laggin and has a sound bzzzzz whenever i plugged in. Is it the battery or The faulty laptop charger cuz i have use my laptop for 5 years
@dlewis9760
@dlewis9760 4 күн бұрын
Some laptops used to be able to run without the battery in them but would continue to run with the charger. More often back in the day when you could unclip the battery externally and not have to take the back off. It may be that works with some models with the battery permanently attached under the screws. You could try that, remove the battery plug it in and see if it boots up. If it doesn't, nothing but a bit of time lost. If it does and no noise, maybe the battery. Does the buzz go away if you turn the speakers off? If you used a HDMI cable to a monitor or TV and turned off the internal sound and screen does the noise go off with it?

Say if my fans were dusty would one be able to run but the other makes a strange hissing type sound? I’ve had a look under my laptop and I can see one of the fans moving while the other starts makes a noise then stops… any ideas?

i loved back in the day how gaming laptops were made especially Clevo laptops very easy to service and clean now all laptops are made with very crappy cooling cause they try to make them look pretty and thin and don't care about functionality and performance that much plus these laptops die alot faster so ppl have to buy new one more often

I’ve considered doing this, but knowing that I will most likely forget where everything goes is what’s making me rethink, I’ve already accidentally broken a fan because I wanted to take it apart for fun cuz I was bored so that won’t happen again

I don't recommend blowing air with your mouth into the laptop because the air we blow has water (saliva actually) particles in it, and you can accidentally cause a short-circuit if you happen to leave some moist inside the PC

as long as you do it cleanly and re asemble after some time (which it takes to completely service and close the laptop) it shouldnt be a problem. hasnt been for me but yes one should take care of that. for heatsinks and fans you can do that. dont blow on the mobo though lol.

I opened my GIGABYTE G5 RTX 3060 2 times. 1 time I installed a 2TB ultra ultra fast m.2 ssd it's one of the fastest but i didn't have a screw for it but luckily i had a computer next to me they gave me the exact one for free. And one time to install 32gb crucial ram and I sold the 16gb I had from it for nearly the same price you'd get the 32gb for. XD I did clean my PC these 2 times but it was not dusty at all cuz I keep my electronics clean.

I've never seen pubes in the laptops ive repaired. I think that really depends on your clientele. I don't work in L.A., Hollywood or NY. Therefore (so far in 20 years) no pubes. Of course, i don't repair machines that teenagers use, so that could be a factor as well. Smokers laptops are the worst, or a laptop that has been used in kitchens or work sites get gross. When i work on laptops i also wear a plastic bag over my beard, head, armpits and pubes, so as to prevent cross pollination. I'm not weird, you're the one working on pube fair laptops.

Another reason, if your laptop is a bit older and a fan goes, good luck getting a replacement quickly. The bearing went on the CPU fan on a 5 year old laptop. Amazon prices were "High". I ended up EBaying someone in China. Downtime was 2 weeks. Ordered 2 even though only 1 went bad. The edges of both fans by the heat pipes looked like a felt carpet pad. My particular fan had its own ASMR video a couple of years ago. A Chinese KZbinr presented with music a box of these fans with the count of 132 of them. I guess it was click on the KZbinr to get in contact with him. The fans were 20 bucks apiece. I bought the 2nd as insurance. Install a temperature app. You don't have to run it all the time. If you have cleaned up system, note the temp. Surfing the web right now is about 43C. When the bearing went, I didn't have a app on the laptop. 15 minutes after turning it off, you'd burn your fingers on the heat pipe. I'm taking 43C as my baseline. If the laptop isn't doing all that much and the temp is much higher with a random check, it will probably be time to clean the guts again.

...Or just don't be blind while trying to look at the screw shapes.
@EpicBunty
@EpicBunty 11 ай бұрын
wrong. screws are not just of different shapes but also different sizes. looking at its shape is not enough of an indicator to know what size is needed. and it is the wrong size bit which strips the screw. essentially if at any time your screwdriver uncatches itself from the screw while screwing or unscrewing, it means you are using the wrong size and have essentially partially stripped the screw. make sure the bit catches the head properly. then work on it.

NEVER USE A TOOTHBRUSH TO CLEAN ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS, USE A HORSE HAIR PAINTERS BRUSH!!!!!!!! Toothbrushes are made from plastic and when plastic heats it melts becoming conductive. So any bristles which drop of the brush poses a risk to internal components. This is one of the very first things you are taught if you actually take a repair course. Compressed air is great as it very safe however ensure that whatever is supplying the compressed air is also grounding it. During the compression and movement of air static electricity builds within the air and again this can damage your components. The air as it is forced to collide into itself causes friction which in turn builds the electric charge. If you want to use a brush use a paint brush made from horse hair as horse hair does not melt. It will burn to ash and be vented by the air circulation. Try to steer away from air in cans, they are bad for the environment and can also drip water on the the thing being cleaned due to the air being released from under pressure being freezing cold. Just think about your deodorant and when you finger covers the hole. Just incase of water of anything else conductive, always remove the battery when doing something like this again he forgot to mention this. To be fair everything I have written above is first year repair technician course stuff. If he couldn't remember this then he clearly is not the greatest technician lol.
What happens if you use the WRONG amount of thermal paste?
