The leather maker in me freaked out when you broke out the Vaseline! Petroleum products will break down leather over time. The same effect can be had by simply using some Neat's Foot Oil. Dillute your alcohol (as this will dry out the leather - and make it stiffer - not more supple) and give it a small spritz with a water bottle. Then add Neat's foot oil - and place out into the sun. It will be one half shade darker when done (it tans like every other skin) but it will be softer. Loved the tutorial and not trying to tell you how to do your craft. Just a suggection.

Great skills be proud, leather is the most beautiful,organic,spiritual, and rewarding medium to work with. Some crafters feel that it has a second life as it gets more beautiful and easier to use as it gets older. It deserves to be treated with respect, the more respect you give it the more rewarding your craft will be!

You could protect the binding , by making a double cover. Overlay an outer cover, on top of the first. glue the edges, and saddle stitch it. This would also let you reverse the 1st/inner cover. This letting you use the grain side, as the interior.

Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial! Good, clean instruction! Could you give us some ideas on how you dye/stain your pages too?
@darkchild57
@darkchild57 8 жыл бұрын
+Erin Allen Thank you:) The tea staining is a very easy process, but can be a lengthy one. I take 3 to 4 packets of liptons tea (or anything other tea brands that you prefer) and mix it with 8 ounces of boiling water. I place all the packets into the water and wait until it's cooled off a bit. I take a sponge, dip it in the tea and apply it to the already prepared paper (already prepared meaning I've cut them down to the appropriate size). I dab here and there, wipe across in certain places....etc. I usually do both sides. Afterwards I find a place to lay them flat and allow them to dry for a day or two. Then I fold them and arrange all the signatures and place them between two slabs of wood. I press it down with several heavy books or weights or you can you locking clamps from a hardware store. Either way you'll want to press the and leave them pressed for another day or two, this will flatten them out and make it easier for sewing. They it's just a matter of sewing it into your cover. I usually do the tea staining first and while waiting for the paper to dry and press I start prepping the cover. I hope this helps:)

Erin Allen You're welcome:) It also could be the brand of tea and the color of parchment paper I use as well. Try using more of a yellow to gold tone parchment paper. If 4 bags of tea isn't a dark enough effect add another tea bag. Happy crafting!

I remember doing coffee stains on paper to make it look like parchment / treasure maps [+burning the edges] x.x Great video as always. Do you ever plan to get even more complicated? Just wondering, wouldn't it be easier to create templates in photoshop, so that every line and hole is exact/precise? And this way the templates are easily accessible, re-printable if damaged, easily change-able, etc.. That softening step reminds me of force-ably breaking in a baseball mitt. Ah nostalgia lol Nice end, sounded totally like a pro tutorial vid
@darkchild57
@darkchild57 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I've never thought of using PS for the templates, that's a good idea. My only concern is that the size is always a tiny bit off when I print from PS. But ultimately I like to tell people my journals are 100% hand crafted, this includes the templates lol:) I like to soften the covers on all my journal, it lends a very nice feel and you won't have to spend years getting that effect. As for your part 2 comment, I have thought about more complicated covers but the problem with adding more features on the inside or outside (ie, button closures, zippers, pockets...) is that it makes an uneven surface for writing. That's why I elect to go with wrap ties and or bands. I've tried several different decorative closures in my past creations and afterwards I noticed it would be annoying to write on, specifically the first few pages at the beginning and at the end of the book. I'm more for functionality first and then looks:)
@jefflowe7635
@jefflowe7635 6 жыл бұрын
I know this is 3 years old, but I found it and others will too so in my book comments are still relevant. Doing things with "templates" takes away from that hand-crafted look you are after. you get perfection instead of that subtle roughness that makes hand-crafted items so special. Love you work!

jpcancela Thank you for your very kind words! I highly recommend that you make one. This is the whole reason I've made the tutorial. I find great relaxation and enjoyment in leather crafting and I hope you feel the same way when you create your own journal. After you're done you'll find that the journal means that much more to you because it was your own creation:)

The bamboo tooling looks awesome. I really love the aged, rustic weathering, it adds a lot of character!!! Thanks for sharing, and Happy New Year!!!

Thank you! The tooling is a lot of work but it's worth it for a totally custom look and feel. Weathering is my favorite effect for the covers and combined with tea stained pages are just the best IMO. Thank you for watching and Happy New Years to you as well!

Thanks! These can be time consuming and it all depends on how much time you're willing to invest. You can cut some of the work out of it by buying pre-dyed leather or faux leather and just 8.5x11 paper without the deckled edges. That should save a lot of time. I find making the journals to be very relaxing so I like to take the long road and make something truly one of a kind:). Thanks for watching my humble video.

incorrect on the leather. The leather characteristics you describe are incorrect. The side and the shoulder do not govern how flexible it is. Ever. At all. What piece of the cow the leather was taken from only governs its density, and toughness. The reason the first piece you showed us is stiff, is not only because its thicker, but because its vegetable tanned leather. The second piece is an upholstery style piece, and is also thinner. The flexibility of the leather is governed by what tanning process it went through, and how thick it is.
