Hi Chris, While using a clamp connector (as WAGO invented it in 1951), you have to use only one wire per slot. Otherwise If you connect 2 sires, you can't be 100% sure that both wires are 100% the same size. So the bigger one would be sure connected, but the smaller could be less connected, and disconnect with vibrations. Or create a hot point if you have a lot of current passing through. By the way, you don't need to weld some tin on your wires if you use WAGO connect, 221 connectors are build for both solid wires or not. Thanks for using WAGO ;)
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for that great information! That makes total sense now why you should only use 1 wire per slot. Also thanks for letting me know the wires do not have to be soldered! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!

if you twist the wires together though you should be able to use a single slot, right? as long as it’s twisted together well

@@danieljames500 yes you could. But the best would be to use a 2wires ferrule to join the two wires together perfectly. For example 2 wires 1mm2 could be gathered using a Wago 216-542

Pretty cool! The end result is a nice addition to your LED room 😁 The nice thing about DIY projects is that there's more than one right way to do things, and I'm not trying to say that anything you've done here is wrong. Everyone has different tools/methods and different personal taste. But if I were to replicate the project here are a few things I'd change: - Power injection, especially if you're already using wago connectors. Would be super easy to connect power from the beginning of the first strip to the middle and end of the circuit. Just swap out your 2 way wagos for 3 way, add a few jumper wires, and you're golden. You'll be able to run them at full brightness with no line loss and less heat. I was actually kinda surprised to not see any line loss on a full 5m at 60 LED/m, though I'm not sure if you have them on max brightness? - I would personally have all of the LED strips running in the same direction, rather than back and forth. This could be done easily in WLED (use the segment feature, and flip them around) or with a rewire. I think a bunch of 1m bars running the same effect/animation in similar colors in the same direction but at slightly different speeds would look totally dope. Would be slick with Aurora, Android, or Sinelon effects, I think. - Wago connectors, solder, and raw ESP boards do work fine, but I would suggest looking into crimp-on ferrules for the ends of your wires. They are a lot easier to work with, give you a better connection into wago and screw-terminal connectors, and will save you a few headaches. As we've chatted about before, DigUno boards work great for projects like these, would definitely recommend them 👍 Thanks for sharing another great project, Chris! I'm definitely going to steal a few of your ideas for my own setup 😁
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks as always! I love your ideas on how to do things differently. The power injection like you mentioned would be super easy! I'm not running them at full brightness. In all my projects, I've always been surprised at how bright things get without a lot of power. Although I'm really only down in my basement at night where a little light goes a long ways in the dark. I'll also have to look into crimp-on! I'm all for making things easier to work with. You know your WLED! I will have to try the segments here soon since I also think that would look sweet! Thanks for watching and all the great feedback!

Rewiring them to run in the same direction would waste a lot of wire since you still need to follow a single data path to be able to segment them. You could run the strips in parallel, but then you lose the ability to control each section individually. WLED allows you to reverse the direction of segments so that they all appear to be running the same direction visually.

Adhesive for bonding metal (or literally any surface, including glass): JB Weld. There are other two-part epoxies out there, but JB Weld still has little competition other than more specialized applications. Although if you planned to use magnets, you probably should've started with one of those metal pegboard panels?

So you had data wires on the first LED but then again on the 4th at 9:12. How does that work? in some parts it seems like they are all red white and black and then at 9:12 the one on the 4th row looks green.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and great observation! So basically what your seeing is me running out of green data wires to use lol. The actual color of the wire does not matter. So I believe in this project I had red for voltage and white for gnd. Then the data was either the green or black wires. Sorry for the confusion! I generally do like to keep everything color coordinated since it makes it a lot easier!

I would look into possibly using a panel bond typically used in auto body repair that might work. That’s what I use for installing rocker panels on cars instead of welding the seams they are glued on with the adhesive. The brand we use for work is 3m though it isn’t the cheapest.

@@ChrisMaherDIY it really is but you gotta be super careful, as once it gets onto a surface (especially metal) it forms this super hard concrete or ceramic kinda skin, and its nearly impossible to remove without damaging the material underneath. its also resistant to chemicals too, so acetone and petroleum based products wont work. but if you wipe it up before it hardens then you'll be good.

If you put all the wires in to a single slot of the wago connectors, the connector may not clamp down on them correctly and they can come loose, among other issues.
@gb1613
@gb1613 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Electrically it's the same connection either way, but mechanically it's better to keep one wire per slot. If you wanted to tie them all together you can just use wire nuts like what're used in home electrical wiring. However, I'm not sure how well stranded wire holds in a wire nut.

The cheapest adhesive option when looks aren't important is baking soda + super glue since they are both at Dollar stores. The baking soda instantly cures the super glue and it's extremely hard. It can even be filed or sanded. It's like cement. There is also a variety of 5 minute epoxy. Then there is high heat hot glue. Not the normal hot glue but the high heat guns and sticks. Much stronger then the crafting hot glue. If you need to drill or say tap the adhesive I would use jb weld as once cured it can be drilled/tapped.

This looks really interesting and you did everything understandable for everyone, im thinking of building this, too ! :) To your question : No it don't make any neccessary change, if you put all of the wires together,.but in electricity its much easier, if you know where the current is-to just take it off and after that everything is current free and you can work without any problems in case of Current on the wires. Yeah you could certainly do it that way! Then all the lights strips would all do the same thing. However, if you do it that way, there is no way you can then make the animations snake back and forth if you wanted to. I also know if I want to have each led strip do the same thing, WLED has built into the software where I can assign any leds I want to a segment and then I can have all the segments do the same thing which is essentially what would be happening if I wired them all up from the 1 side. Its a little confusing but hopefully that makes sense! Thanks for watching!

I'm working on a project that'll need about 24 light bars about 7-8 ft tall( haven't decided). Any recommendation on light strips? I need some that are app controlled and have nice effects. Govee or WLED I've seen have decent effects in looking for. Just need to know what strips I can cut and add together that'll give a great look without hotspots. Any info will be great. I've went through a lot of your videos. Govee m1 would have been great but $100 I a little steep. Thanks in advance

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Sounds like an awesome project! I've really enjoyed using the 5v sk6812 leds. They work great and have a separate channel for white. they can be cut and attached at whatever length you need. For large custom projects like that, I would not recommend the Govee M1 due to the limitations you have on cutting them at whatever length. LED Lights Amazon: amzn.to/3Zguu3y LED Lights AliExpress: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Dm2FaeJ And then the light above (or any strip that has at least 60 leds per meter or more will look perfect in these diffusers: Diffuser Channel 1m Lengths: amzn.to/3E1xSXc Diffuser Channel 2m Lengths: amzn.to/3jO3wAu

Hmm, maybe use the end caps, and drill a hole just small enough for the wires to go through and stick them through, you won't see anything, and i doubt it will really be disturbing the LEDs don't really go all the way to each end. Make it as tight as possible of course.

12v or 5v W2812’s? Important detail since the ESP can’t take 12v safely. Also curious about power calculations and the amperage you went with given the risk of drop-off with 5v.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I should have said that in the video. They are the 5v kind. The link takes you to the 5v ws2812b led lights. Those have been my go to lights for most of my projects and have worked pretty well! I don't exactly have a scientific approach to any of the powering. For this project I used a DC 5 Volt 15 Amp power supply. What I generally do is just hook everything up at the beginning with no power injection and see how it looks. I have never had a reason to have the lights at full brightness and full white so I'm generally just testing out different animations and color combinations and seeing if it passes the eye test. For this project I have the wled limiter set to 2000mh and everything looks great as far as I can tell with no power injection needed. Someone did comment however that if you did want to inject power, it would be super easy to add using the wago connectors!

Hi Chris, thanks for sharing this! I tried it out but the only issue I’m getting is the LED flickers when changing Colors and acts abrupt when powered using the 5V power supply. When I use a USB power for the ESP8266, it’s lower brightness but the lights are stable. Any idea what can be done to fix this?
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm that is strange! The flickering and changing of colors I've only ever gotten when the data line running from the esp device to the first led is a little too long. How long is the data line in your setup? I don't think that would be the issue here since it works with the usb but just trying to think of things to eliminate that it could be.

Thanks so much for watching! So my main setting in WLED is to remove all the colors from the circles and then in effects go to Blink. I then go back to the color pallets and choose some of the pre set ones they have to get a nice gradient affect. I also like colortwinkle, android, bouncing balls. I do want to at some point do a WLED walkthrough with some of my favorite settings!

Hi, question. Is there a reason to use the ESP8266 with WLED instead of Govee RGBIC strips? Govee seems to be cheaper to control with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 жыл бұрын
I do love Govee and they make great products that are very easy to set up and use. There are a couple reasons though why at least for this project, I would still use the the ws2812b led strips. As far as I know, Govee only has led strips that have 30/leds per meter. This diffuser will work better than anything else out there to make led strips with 30/leds per meter look great with minimal hotspots but its still not going to look as good as an led strip with 60/leds per meter which is what I used in the video. Also, using wled with an esp8266 gives you a little more options when it comes to customizing and overall the app and responsiveness is better in my opinion than using govee. Thanks for watching and great question!

Wago's are for less annoying Wire Nuts or soldering. you put 1 wire into each wago so that it makes a firm connection, as opposed to the Twist and Prey of the classical Wire Nuts. Putting more than 1 cable per hole kind of defeats the purpose. That said, the LED Board likely isn't moving so much, so you could have gotten away with soldering them, or Twisting them then using hot glue/ heat shrink or Electrical tape given how little power they actually use, and it would have been cheaper than the $0.40-0.60 per connector you used.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much and that makes perfect sense the way you explained it. Lol twist and pray! That is the only bummer part, they are not the cheapest thing out there but to me its worth it to not have to use wire nuts or solder or electrical tape! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

Thanks for watching! I generally just use the eye test. I hook up everything with no power injection and see how it looks. If i ran these at full white and full brightness, there would definitely be some voltage drop and the leds at the end would look more orange. However, when turning the brightness down, and running any animation, i saw no drop off in performance even with all the cut up wires. I've also never had a use case for any of my projects to run at full brightness as its honestly hard to even look at when led lights are that bright. Lol, all that to say that in this scenario, it got plenty bright and everything looked great to me with no power injection. Someone did comment before though that it would be super easy to just add some power if you wanted via the wago connectors at any point! Thanks for watching!

Try Closet Rails and tracks at walmart or homedepot/lowes. they should be close enough, and the main purpose of the rails are more for heat management anyway. try and match up the width if you can, if you cant score it with a knife and get to bending.... carefully Edit: the part you are looking for is Aluminum Extrusion Channel / aluminum extrusion U Channel, if you can find them, they're like 8-10 feet (aluminum extrusion hat channel if you want to put them in a wall or spacers for drywall)
