what do you suggest for 50' of led lighting to light up stair path...I just need to run it down the side. I want them bright. Im not to worried about diffusion just brightness and having it powered at only one end. I want rgb so I can change colors. programming it to do crazy stuff is not a requirement.

DIY with 5-volt addressable strips gives you higher resolution (and can power the esp32 right from it). It can will require power injection for longer runs, but if you aren't afraid of a little soldering, you can get really nice results.

I find that if you just want color and not really sure or don’t really care on the where and specifics, Govee is fine. If you have very specific requirements (needs to be primary lighting for the room), LEDs need to be individually addressable because of a certain effect you want, need to be able to control total brightness (may need power injection), want strips to specifically be on these edges and these under cabinet and these vaulted ceiling trims, extensions tend to be much easier with DIY, then DIY is the way to go. Sometimes you want a corner trim to connect to an edge trim, to connect to an upfiring trim, to a non-diffused downfiring trim and you want them all to go sequentially. Go DIY. There’s no kit solution for that. It’s work going DIY, no doubt about it. And most of the work is research. I think once you get all the right components and tools, install is pretty straightforward.

Definitely want teh COB variant for what I'm planning to install, not a big fan of seeing LED's. DIY kind of speaks more to me, just getting a handle on the whole thing and problemsolving seems like fun. The biggest challenge so far, as you also say in the video, is just figuring out what the heck to buy. There's so much out there and it's not clear at all. Wiring DC stuff is a doddle, soldering is easy, but finding the right components to buy so it all works, that's tough. Especially since I'm also only now getting into the home automation bit for real, took one of my existing Raspberry PI's and slapped a Z-wave transceiver on it, but now I have to wrap my head around Z-wave, Zigbee and all that stuff as well. Still... it should be fun.

That looks incredible! Nice job! My most recent set of light strips, I went DIY, and yeah... my soldering still sucks. I felt like I needed the bigger gauge wire to cross a gap, but then I had a hell of a time soldering them to the strips. Even these crimp connectors I got to make it easier, still caused a lot of headaches.
@tkturbo_jsps
@tkturbo_jsps 10 ай бұрын
The decision for many is direct controllability. For example, none of the pre-packaged strips can be controlled by DMX. For a “set-n-forget” rig, then, yeah, prepackaged is the way to go. For my designs I need direct control to work with the rest of my lighting system. That part was kind of unsettling. DIY implies an interest in learning new skills and understanding of new things, like electronics or woodworking, or whatever, so it doesn’t require being an electrical engineer, but it does require an interest in learning something new, so that complaint is invalid.

LED density is measured in LEDs per meter. You can buy much more dense strips for DIY projects than the one you have here. Looks like you are using a 60 LED/Meter strip. You can get them at 144/meter.

Great video! I'm looking to shine color from my ceiling onto a wall painted flat black. I don't want to see the LED diodes so I'm wondering if there are LEDs that point or are cut at an angle. In other words, if I'm looking at that wall I just want to see the effect of the light, not the LED diodes. Similar to those under your bed, cabinet, etc. I'm wondering if i need to install a small piece of wood across the ceiling to physically hide the LED strip. Thoughts?

Are there any options in the USA for in-wall switch panels/controllers for ARGB strips? I'm working on a project for a friend, and she wants to stay away from needing to control her kitchen's strips via an app and would like an in-wall panel that has a standard on/off switch and the ability to change the strips' colors from the wall panel.

Great Video! One thing to note is that the Govee M1 Lightstrip does not have separate LEDs for white, so it can't produce a very warm white. If you only want to use the RGB colors anyway, it doesn't matter.

Hi Reed, great video. Do you happen to know if you can cut the FCOB dreamcolor strips you used and then make use of the remaining, or is that fit for the bin once it's been cut? I'd really like to try and make some use of these strips if i can but the use case i would like to put them too would mean several shorter strips, i'd like to save by buying a larger roll but that's of no use to me if i cn't use the remaining strip once i've cut it. Not being able to cut the Govee M1 strips at lengths less than 1.5ft (where solder line is), makes them very limiting, frustrating in fact. Begrudgingly, now I have to research WLED, controllers, etc. just so I can be able to cut to custom lengths for toe kicks, under range hood, shelving, etc. Chris Maher is arguably the best at it on KZbin but it’s A LOT to get familiar with. Govee really needs to allow cut points every 2” or so. Also, the directions for using / installing those controllers has my head spinning. 🤦🏻‍♂️ And how many strips will work in a series on a single power source?

There is a huge problem with GOVEE... they do NOT SELL separate controllers.. I bought the 65' version.. and it comes with 2, 33' rolls.. well if you want to put them in different rooms.. you are out of luck or even if you want to put them end to end.. NOPE not going to happen you have to be within the distance of the dual cables coming out of the controller box.. so NOT GOOD for that.. just Saiyan make sure you get as close to the size run that you need.. or you will be wasting money .. I love the DIY with individual adjustable leds.. and then just get a separate controller.. they have some that are super easy to use and are universal ..

Govee vs Honeywell? Govee hands down. I have both and am disappointed in the lack of functionality with Honeywell. Govee’s scenes, stock animation, and the ability to program the lights through their mobile app drops the mic. Honeywell is brighter but lacks 90% of the functionality found in Govee. The Govee mobile app lets you control several lights. If I want to turn on just my parameter lights, I can target them specifically without all the other lights reacting. My choice is clear.
