Distilled water, witch hazel, a dash of hand soap will work much better and not damage coatings over time.

I purchased 4 Lens & Frame Cleaner spray Bottles from Lenscrafters. I gave away one bottle to my brother. I have one last bottle left with 50 % liquid left. I need to buy some more soon to clean my glasses or they become very dirty. I also need the liquid spray to clean my ipad and electronics.

I’m the same way. I need to have a cleaner with me and clean my lenses and glasses (reading and sunglasses). I stopped buying spray cleaners since I learned how to make my own. It definitely saves money over time.

Doesnt alcohol remove the coating for the lenses?

Great question! In my experience I want to say yes it does. If it’s a pretty heavy amount of alcohol and if the lens with coating is pretty cheap. I had glasses with AR coating once from Costco and used those individual wrapped lens cleaning packets and after a few uses it took away the coating. Now, I used the same wipes to clean a very expensive lens filter with the same coating with those same wipes and it never did anything to it. So I think if a cleaner is made with a small amount of alcohol and with more water in the mix, I feel I can trust it more than buying one from the outside. If you’re not really sure about using a cleaner with alcohol in the mix I would just clean with water and micro fiber cloth.

If it is too much alcohol yes it can eventually take away coating over time. I also sometimes use what they call a “lens pen”. It’s basically carbon material that takes away oil or smudge from the lens.

I use 70% ethyl rubbing alcohol. I only use the 3 ounce bottles to make my solution. I only pour to fill 25% of alcohol in a bottle and the rest water. You don’t want to use too much alcohol I had a bad experience using more than 30%.

Can use isopropyl alcohol as alcohol?

With isopropyl, if it’s a 100 percent alcohol I think it will dissolve more quickly once you spray in your glasses/lens due to the high concentration. I’m no scientist and have not tried 100 percent yet and only have I used the 70 percent (already mixed with water) to use on my solution. If you are using 100 percent, maybe lessen the alcohol ratio unless you want something really strong. Just be careful using it that it may strip any chemical coatings in glasses or camera lenses.

Alcohol is a pretty strong liquid that cuts through oils and grease. If the mixture is just soap and water it wouldn’t really clean the lens on the glasses and probably would just leave a slight haze. That’s because there’s not enough soap added to the mixture. If soap and water is what you want to only use, you would have to add more soap to the mix but you will end up with suds and would have to rinse the glasses under running water each time, like washing dishes after dinner. I hope this helps.
