My favorite was to use Dawn. Of course! Dawn also works to get sheep fleece clean of VM (vegetative material, sort of a euphemism for... yeah, what sheep eat). I stopped by an eyewear place once to get my sunglasses adjusted and the guy used something in a spray to clean them. The next thing I knew, the lens coating ended up blistering on the edges by the frames. Not cool! It pays to use the good stuff.

I've been in the optometry biz for 17 years. One of the most common things I see is when people bring in their glasses and ask why the lenses are getting scratched even though they use the cleaning cloth. A major reason is because I find out that the cleaning cloth is just stored on a shelf in the medicine cabinet or in the corner of the work desk. When you're not using it, store it in a ziplock bag. This will keep dust and whatnot from getting picked up and settling in the fibers. Also, when you're cleaning the lenses with the microfiber cloth, use minimal pressure. This way, if there IS anything embedded in the fibers, or dust/dirt on the lens, it won't be ground into the lens coating (most of those AR coatings he mentions are very delicate). Before you clean your lenses, rinse them under water first to get any excess dust/dirt off of them. Also, if that cloth gets to be too dirty, it can be washed with the rest of your laundry, as long as you don't use fabric softener on it. When it's done, don't put it in the dryer. Just hang it over the back of a chair for an hour or so to let it air-dry.

I had to get glasses when I was 18, and now I'm 64. Somehow, I started cleaning my glasses with dish detergent, and always have. For many, many years, I've used Dawn. I turn the water on low, get my glasses wet and also get my thumb and a couple of fingers wet. I squirt a couple of drops of Dawn on my fingers and smear it around on my lenses and the frames and pads and then continue while I put them in the water flowing from the faucets. I keep rubbing both sides of the lenses until the soap is gone and the water is clear. We have always had a water softener so I don't have to worry about minerals scratching my lenses. The final touch is to dry off my lenses with one of 4 or 5 old cotton diapers left over from when my two children were little. It works every time. Years ago, when my wife and I split-up, we actually divided the diapers between us so that we each had a supply to dry our glasses'; they were that important to us. LOL -- True Story :-)

In my experience (and was told by optical shop to do this) always rinsing the dirt and dust off first before rubbing with any cloth or fingers is much safer. Most of the scratches come from people rubbing lenses (that have specs of dirt on them) and the dirt rubbed in is what scratches the most. Rinse them off, then use cleaner or soap, then dry with a clean microfiber.

I have been wearing glasses for decades, and the best method I have found to clean them is warm water, hand washing soap and a clean, dry (towelling/cloth) towel to dry them. This means I can pretty much clean my glasses whenever I wash my hands. Any type of paper should be avoided as tiny pieces of lignin in paper scratch lenses. Lens tissues (lignin free) exist for optical instruments, but are expensive, and any clean, dry cloth will do fine for the lenses.

As an optician who's been practicing for close to 40 years now, I advise my customers to simply hold the glasses by the ends of the temples or just folded up and wave the entire pair around in clean, soapy dishwater or really any soapy water, rinse them off and dry them with any soft cloth (hand towel, ect). It'll clean the entire pair, especially any frame with nosepads, which can get grimy after a while (they can usually be easily replaced if necessary). At least wetting the lenses before you wipe them off will lessen scratching. Microfiber cloths work well but are really dry use cloths as they're not very absorbent and should be washed every so often (hand wash or laundry with no fabric softener) as they trap the dirt. If your glasses have an anti-reflective coating (same coating that's on camera, binocular, ect lenses to let in more light), they show dirt more, so they seem dirty more often. Get the better quality A/R if available, as it's easier to clean and more scratch resistant. As for ultrasonic cleaning, you have to be careful with those as they can damage older A/R or scratch resistant coatings if you leave them in too long.

For anyone with clear frames, avoid using alcohol or hand sanitizer on them because it will discolor them and make them brown and gross and make them more brittle and breakable. It has happened to me twice before I realized what was causing it. The first time I was gently cleaning the nose after a sweaty parkour session and they broke in half, and my second pair of clear frames have gone even more brown and gross, and developed a crack from dropping them. Be careful and carry real cleaner and use wet wipes or something gentle to clean the frames of oil and sweat.

I just saw a comment right above yours that he says dish soap is to harsh, I personally have been using dish soap but now I'm a little worried . I got my glasses today oakley frames and lenses with the works very expensive. Insurance paid most but they were like 1100 bucks ! But hey I use those throw away clothes dude , they look like kleenex but made for glasses I buy them at lenscrafters. That way you know it's clean and you are not wiping with something that may have small dirt or tiny rocks so when your wiping you are actually scratching the lenses. I learned that the hard way that's why I don't keep a cloth in my pocket to use. If anything I keep a clean one in the case and if I'm not home I don't try and really clean my glasses until I can do it properly. Over a year I had my last pair and for sure they are the best condition pair I have had so far.

I have had my glasses for 8 years now. I have made my own solution of rubbing alcohol water and a couple of drops of dish soap. I noticed that my silicone nose pads were green and I thought what is my glasses tarnishing?? It was from the soap and I had very little soap in there but just over time that's what happened, it collected in the little nubs that the nose pads sit on. And just for the record, I do not have a single scratch, and none of the finishes are off of them they have transitions and no glare and it's a polycarbonate lens. No problem whatsoever. I am removing the dish soap out of my solution. (1/3 rubbing alcohol with 2/3 water. Put into a small mist sprayer. I also have cut up an old soft cotton t-shirt) 😊

I would start any discussion of cleaning eyeglasses with rinsing the glasses first (warm water as you say). If someone grabs their microfiber and starts rubbing the glasses there is a chance they are rubbing grime and grit into the lens. Great tip on using the mild dishwashing liquid. You also need to note that some people sweat a lot especially if you live in a warmer climate and you need to clean your glasses more maybe once or twice a day. The mineral deposits from sweat actually can corrode metal frames after time and those plastic nose pads also turn green and need regular replacing. People who tend to sweat more should use acrylic or plastic frames over your metal ones in my opinion.

Which is fine once you remove those shit coatings they put on the lenses, so they scratch off and you have to buy new glasses. Next time that happens, just get some rubbing compound from an auto parts store for plastic, if you have plastic lenses like most people nowadays and it'll buff right off. Glass lenses just need some pure alcohol to soak in and something mildly abrasive to rub it off.

Great advice Doc. I often use the washing detergent method, but I fear that the water which gets onto the arms and thus onto the screws on the barrel or spring (flex) hinges may eventually cause damage (i.e. rust on the screws?). I dry them quickly, so I hope that's not the case. After that, I use a microfiber cloth and a special spray for eyeglass cleaning.

Instead of using as much dish soap as you show (because getting that much soap rinsed off takes awhile) I got a very spray container at one of the big box stores, filled it almost full and added 5-6 drops to the water, shook it good and you have a diluted solution that you can still wipe with your fingers but which rinses off a lot faster than full strength Dawn. My 2 Cents.

Good tips. I use the dish soap tip a lot. I don't use Dawn,but another brand,Ivory. Didn't realize I could use compressed air,but I would prefer using an electric air duster. Compressed air in the can is expensive and bad environmentally. I have hard water,so that may be something that makes cleaning my glasses harder. I have noticed that the microfiber cloth that came with my glasses is good for removing streaks.

My problem is that I hate when there is a streak or smudge after using the lens cloth or disposable wipe. I was hoping you were going to show some amazing way to use the wipe that is streak-less
@TheRealCoyote2 жыл бұрын
Just in case anyone reads this after all these years: There are a couple of reasons for those streaks. 1. Your hands have natural grease in them and as you spin the cloth in your hands to wipe, every time the cloth gets a little more grease in it that then ends up on the lenses. Which brings us to point number 2. Wash the cloth often, they are only good for a few uses before they have to be cleaned. I have big bunch of micro fiber cloths that I use couple times and then throw in the laundry basket. Make sure you clean them by themselves, especially avoid washing with textiles that give of lint, like regular towels. Otherwise your microfiber cloths pick it all up and when you use them they leave lint and fibers on the lenses, mirrors etc. Also don't use fabric softeners (they are a scam and totally unneccessary anyway). Number 3. The most important point if you ask me. Every 3rd...to maybe 5th cleaning of your glasses you need to do it a bit diffently. A lot of grease, oil, dead skin, etc gets collected elsewhere on your glasses than the lenses. And when you try to clean them it is virtually impossible to clean the lenses without having the microfiber cloth touch the frame, nose support, hinge, ...etc and then transfer it back on to the lenses. Relatively quick and easy way to get brilliant results: 1. wash your hands with dish wash soap - no more oil tranfer and it makes your skin softer. Especially guys can have a very dry harsh skin surface. 2. wash you glasses ENTIRELY with hand warm water and dish soap. Especially concentrate on nose piece and the hooks that touch you temple/ears. Just use wet soapy fingers and very gentle pressure. You can feel when there is no more roughness and they are all smooth and slippery. 3. Rinse thoroughly. Make sure to run the water so it pushes any residuals from hinges and and nose pieces etc. 4. Shake the glases a few times to make them as dry as possible. 5. Dry your hands with regular towel. 6. Gently dry the lenses with a CLEAN microfiber. Sounds like a lot of work written down but takes about 2 minutes to do. Alternatively you can buy an ultrasonic cleaner dirt cheap on ebay, amazon, direct from china etc. and use regular dish soap in it. Remember to change the water after each use and for streakless drying the same applies: microfiber and your hands must be absolutely clean. Additional points: Not all microfiber cloths are born equal. The free ones are usually shit and too small. Many discount stores, depending on where you live have sets of 5 big ones for maybe 5€ and they are great. I have even come across very expensive ones "guaranteed to give sparkling results" that where extremely poor. Looking through the lenses after wiping revealed the entire lens surface was coated with almost microscopic fibers which you could not remove without washing the glasses again (This effect did not go away with washing as I hoped).
@raphaelhudson2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealCoyote do you need to put soapy water in the ultrasound solution? I bought one, but it didn't seem to work so well with ordinary water.

Hey! I’m an Optician in the UK. No disrespect to Dr Allen, love the videos, but I would strongly advise against using dish soap on spectacle lenses. I’ve seen numerous cases where it strips the coatings off lenses. Dish soap is very harsh and is designed to strip oils and grease off your dishes, it will make light work of the coating on your lenses !
@michaelmarquez61332 жыл бұрын
Whaaat! I started using dish soap maybe a year and half ago or more but I never thought of it that way. Before I used to use those throw away single lens wipes but the last time I used those was one day I picked up my glasses brand new very expensive and that same day I had a lile micro type scratch, I was really upset and went back into lenscrafters. That's when the guy told me it might have been the wipe wasn't that moist anymore. After that I constantly am buying new clothes and storing them not just in my pocket so they don't get little dirt that can scratch my lens. But I try and use the box of cloth that look like tissue that I can just throw away. Now my glasses are in much better condition, still trying to learn to take care of then tho. If not dish soap then what should I use ? Like if they are really dirty? I'm gonna look for another kind of soap that will be safe, I don't always need soap mostly just run under warm water and use lens cleaner and clean cloth
@michaelmarquez61332 жыл бұрын
@Laura Zaiceva I got my new glasses oakley frame and lenses maybe a month ago or 2, I haven't used dish soap at all just warm water in the beginning then a lot of the solution and I use a one time single lens cloth, so far no scratches!

@@moonlight__h3676 sorry as a professional working for 22 years in a optical store DAWN original formula has not hurt my blue blocker or COATED lenses!! Actually it cleans around the lenses and nose pads and it’s darn disgusting how many people do not clean those areas and the nose pads go green! Oil sunscreen makeup accumulates around those areas transfers these deposits across the lenses making it impossible to clean !! Also can damage your lenses too depending on what transferred over!! Lens cleaner is a convenient cleaner however I still recommend rinsing after cleaning with warm water to remove the cleaner deposits which can accumulate on the lenses. In fact I so wish more people would use Dawn original it’s disgusting what we see! NEVER USE ATI BACTERIAL VERSIONS OF DISHWASHER SOAP!! They will strip your coatings!!

As an optician for over 20 years, I can tell you that you ALWAYS want to make sure your lenses are wet! Just using even a cloth made to wipe lenses can cause scratches if there is dust or anything on the lenses. Most optical stores sell lenses with scratch resistant lenses, NOT SCRATCH PROOF!. BUT, the only lenses that are virtually scratch free are glass...you may have a hard time finding those anywhere.

First, I want to thank you for posting this video! However, I’d like to suggest that you offer some non-toxic alternatives to the cleaners you mention. Besides environmental concerns, many of us cannot tolerate products containing fragrances, surfactants, preservatives, and other common ingredients. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) gives Dawn dish liquid a Day rating: their ingredient disclosure is “poor”; may contain ingredients with potential for acute aquatic toxicity; skin irritation/allergies/damage; respiratory effects. Ingredients (those that *are* listed, anyway): Alcohol Denatured, C10-16 Alkyldimethylamine Oxide, Colorants, Fragrances, Methylisothiazolinone, PEI-14 PEG-24/PPG-16 Copolymer, Phenoxyethanol, PPG-26, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Water, C9-11 Pareth-8 - There are many dish soap brands available that are safe for the environment, free of ingredients problematic to those with sensitivities, and also free of the moisturizing ingredients that would smear lenses. Seventh Generation Free and Clear dish soap is but one of many.
