A very detailed description of the J1772 standard. In this video I explain the information we need to know in order to design and build our own level 1 or level 2 EVSE.

Great video Jacob, you explained it very well. The J1772 is actually the protocol which is used, and European EVs use a different plug (Mennekes) but the exact same J1772 protocol. My plug on the Renault Zoe has 5 big pins for 3 phase 240V AC charging and also the pilot and proximity pin, it does not have a button on top but the car latches onto the plug automatically so you cannot remove it during charging. I'm going to build one based on you design, the only difference is I use a 4 pole contractor/relay and the plug pinout is different. And since the Zoe is very fussy about the signal I will probably need the -12V but I can modify that. Thanks for the videos!

The best description of the J1772 level 1 and level 2 charger it"s a "smart safety switch". It makes sure certain safety procedures are followed. It's all automatic so a user can't skip a connection step.

Great instructional video. I have a 2017 Zero SR electric motorcycle. Can you make a tutorial on building a 3.3 or 6.6 kwh 220 volt level 2 onboard charger? Diginow makes them but they want over $3000.00 for their charging system. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If I'm in Europe, and we use CCS charger, the vehicle controller is the same as J1772 ? It should be right? I don't wanna mess it up, that's why I'm doing this question. Thank you

Hi, if I buy a voltage converter “110 to 220” in an attempt to boost up the charging time when I plug my cord to it, what specifications should I look at when buying the product?

If you want a power supply that can. Provide+/-12v with a common Ground a pc power supply would work as long as it's low current. Very cheap too

Jason, level 1 charging cable broke when I ran my car over it. Don't ask me the details.. Is it safe to strip off the plastic covering to repair the wires and rewrap it with electrical tape? Or is it more involved? I have not had time to watch the whole video.

If you have 3-phase at home (even with 16A protection or so) it is possible to use Accelev 2-phase charger with speed up to 5kW (it divides load onto two phases equally).

Cool project! But i don’t think that the amount of effort plus the cost(and safety) will justify diy over commercial ones. Been doing some research and found out that Easee smart charger comes with the price tag just around 730 euros.

Probably to all the Dykstra and Dijkstra's who originate from the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, with that surname all over the the globe. My mom was one of them.

ok so if u want to make a charging station at home, you are going to need (apart from the j1772 plug) a 9v power supply, get a power point put in right next to where your j1772 plug comes out so u can just plug your 9v power supply in there. then get a 1khz signal generator to run off the 9v and adjust to where u want your max power output to be (see the wiki)
