wow this is a lot easier then I thought those guys on the gxor form sure do know how to exaggerate. Thanks for the fast and simple tutorial. Thank god I found this before ordering the Phoenix screen
@JustDriven Жыл бұрын
We've had a little experience with the Phoenix and android stuff which is exactly why the Alpine was ordered and the dive into installing something better. There is one small step we skipped. The buttons on the OEM air controls do not light up with the illumination wire. We may do this later but just wanted to make sure it all works. The hardest part will be locating an OEM air control that matches your model GX. Message us if you have any questions. Good luck!

This is a great video! I sure am glad I found it. I will be doing the non-nav conversion on my GX and installing a Joying headunit myself. With the brackets, the HU, and the A/C controllers is already very expensive. I have also waited a long time to find these parts and did not feel like paying more and waiting more to get the harness from the guy on GXOR. Planning on doing it during the holidays, can't wait!
@JustDriven Жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yah, this is a little more work than the premade harness, but it did the trick! We found our AC controls (purchased from a wrecked GX) does not have illuminated buttons, but we may be missing the 8th wire we read about on line. Good luck with your install!
@WiscomptonBoys8 ай бұрын
Superb information. Nav units have an external “ac amplifier”, which is the box you unplugged.. handles all the AC stuff and talks to the nav buttons. Non nav units have the AC amplifier built in, so the board behind the buttons processes all the AC stuff in house. Really nice that Toyota made both options pinned/operate the same, which allows this mod to work!

Toyota and most Japanese manufacturers are very kind when it comes to modification.

I've already sourced the proper Climate control unit needed to convert my 2008 gx470 to no-nav. where can I get a set of non-nav mounting brackets?
@JustDriven5 ай бұрын
We ordered them through a local Lexus dealership. Lexus parts now on the internets may have them also.

The radio brackets were the last thing for me to source for my 08. I found them on ebay. Instead of looking for the brackets by themselves, I searched for the non-nav radio and the correct model year brackets were attached.

I have a 2006 nav and want to do this. The problem is I cant find the non nav climate controls that end in 73. You state in your description that previous years may not work? I see 71 advertised on eBay for 2006 but don’t want to spend $400 if not.
@JustDriven Жыл бұрын
Do not spend the money. Keep searching. We don't believe it's worth the risk. Search for the exact model number in good ole google. That's how we found ours.

How about the metal brackets that hold in the nav? Did you replace those or use the existing radio brackets?

Any regrets so far with the swap? If you had it to do over, what would you do differently? I’m getting ready to do this to my 2009 GX.
@JustDriven10 ай бұрын
Maybe go with a larger screen? Otherwise it's SO much better than the OE Nav screen. No regrets.

Awesome video, about to do this myself. I was wondering, however, how is the audio quality after the swap? Were the adapters pretty straightforward to use the ML amp?
@JustDriven3 ай бұрын
It sounds greats and the adaptors do not affect the sound quality. Everything shown in the video just plugs into the ML harnesses.

Interesting. I’m not ready to buy a grandpa car yet, but when I do, this was the model I pre-chose. Seems like the perfect blend of everything I love about Toyota in a very comfortable and capable package.

Smooth power from a bulletproof V8. Off-road ready. Classic Toyota SUV styling. And three rows of seating for kids....or in this case...pups.

@@JustDriven Meanwhile, you could still drive it off-road on Saturday, clean it on Sunday with high pressure water, and back to furry best friend hauler on Monday. I’m considering turning my LS400 into a swap donor and picking up a Lexus Landcruiser of some flavor instead. I’ve had my fun with the old girl.

I am not convinced that the Phoenix screen is worth it and would rather do this conversion. I'm trying to locate salvaged HVAC controls for my 2009 gx470. When I type in the part number you listed it comes back as "amplifier assembly". This doesn't sound like the same thing. Is this correct? Do you have links to the rest of the parts that you ordered? Thanks.
@JustDriven10 ай бұрын
It is our understanding the 2009 AC controls are very difficult to locate. The part listed shows up under "amplifier assembly, air." Assuming how some places have the air controls for non nav systems. The rest of the parts for this project were purchased through Crutchfield along with the Alpine unit. We listed the parts in case anyone doing this doesn't want to go the same route.

How long of a wire did you use to extend? Would 2 feet be enough for each wire to reach center of dash?
@JustDriven9 ай бұрын
We purchased 6 foot wiring but didn't use it all. Better to have excess wiring than not enough.
@Constipatedoverlord9 ай бұрын
The oem rear camera wont be compatible with the new head unit? Did you just route the new one where the old wiring went?
@JustDriven9 ай бұрын
We used the new Alpine rear camera and ran it along the passenger side of the vehicle to the headunit. We had to make a small ABS plate to mount the new camera since it doesn't mount the same as the OEM camera. It was pretty straightforward though.
@MrLuescher Жыл бұрын
Can you cut the mark levinson amp out during this process and install an aftermarket amp?
@JustDriven Жыл бұрын
You can but you’d need to replace the speakers and run new wiring. Either from a new 4 channel amp to the speakers or from the new head unit to the speakers.
@MrLuescher Жыл бұрын
@@JustDriven do you know if there’s a wiring diagram for the speakers/amp? Wondering if I can just identify the speaker outputs from the amp and keep the stock wiring with a new amp in the factory location

@@JustDriven I really like it a lot. I was originally wanting an SUV as an extra vehicle for trips etc and had planned on a mid 2000's 4 runner then discovered this, seemed like a better option. I searched the country coast to coast and found one that checked the boxes I wanted(white, good service records, no rust, stock and decent miles). I flew to NYC and drove it 1200 miles home, can't believe it didn't have rust.
