I recently built a DIY starting battery using used CALB 72ah cells and a Daly smart BMS.
This was an experiment because the cells are only rated at 72 amps, 144 amps peak... but I was able to get over 500A continuous for 30 ish seconds cranking a 7.3 PSD.
This video is a showcase of what happens when the battery gets full while driving. Will it overcharge your battery?
Spoiler alert: No, the BMS does it's job and disconnects the cells when the target voltage is reached, allowing power to be used(if needed), but the cells will not 'float'.
Edit: Just a note for anyone interested - it would be best to add a capacitor to add voltage stabilization to the system after the batteries are disconnected, to prevent high spikes(remember, it can't spike lower than the battery voltage of ~13V, because the battery will discharge, but not charge)

i hope you remove that battery now before you kill your charging system. your alternator needs always be connected to the battery to prevent voltage spikes. if you use lithium for starting application you need the voltage cutout at 15v (3.75v per cell). your bms is going in to fault mode this is extremely bad setup.

If you set the voltage cutout that high, you will cook the batteries! I wasn't going to use this battery for this application, but now I might - I want to prove it can be done safely. Worst case, I fry the alternator regulator. I'm not worried too much about it - You can see how it levels out quite well with just the load of the headlights and the fan motor. Just to note - the fan motor will act like a "capacitor" of a sort as long as it is spinning - being a brushed motor, it will generate power as it spins down, which will act to stabilize the voltage. And I have proven this with multiple other vehicles in the past - you can totally run without a battery in a pinch, as long as you keep the fan blowing. I intend on adding a small capacitor to my system to level out spikes, but honestly.... it'll likely work fine anyway.
