I watched the video several times and took notes so that I could fully understand what I was going to do. I need to adjust the measurements to fit my size but these are the notes that I took based on the video for people who were saying that wanted written instructions. Materials 3m long by 3m wide tulle or hard netting. Will be called tulle for the rest. 46cm long by 1.5 m wide satin inside Thread that matches the color of your petticoat 12m wide lace 12m wide ribbon satin 6m wide elastic How to Measure Length can change based on your height or how long you want the skirt. Measure from your natural waist or wherever you want your skirt to set to where you want your skirt to end and that is your length. Width is for how wide you are. I am a much bigger lolita than melikestea. Measure wherever you want your skirt to sit. It wasn't mentioned in this video but most people say to take your waist measurement and times it by 2.5 and that is your width. In my case I'm a 92cm waist so my width would be 230cm or 2.3 m. So the satin inside would be 2.3m wide, the tulle would be 4.6m wide, the elastic would be 9.2m, and the lace and ribbon would be 18.4m. Hopefully you see the doubling pattern. In order to not confuse people I will keep the measurements said in the video. Mark 5cm down all across the satin inside. Sew your hem at the bottom of your skirt. Then close the ends of the skirt by bringing them together and sewing them aking it into a skirt. Now go around and sew the very very top of the 5cm mark we made before. This is where she sews the very tippy top Make 4 lines of stiching with enough space inbetween for the elastic to slide through Make sure not to sew all the way around because you still need to slip the elastic in later Cut strips of tulle. 17cm length by 3m wide (2) and 21cm length by 3m wide (4) Take two of the 21cm strips and sew them together making a 6m wide strip Sew the lace onto the end of this long strip 6m of lace Sew lace onto the other two 21cm long strips (6m) Cut one of the 17cm long strip in half. Now you have 17cm by 3m (x1) and 17cm by 1.5m (x2) 21cm by 6m (x1) and 21cm by 3m (x2) Sew together the 17cmX3m strip with the 21cmX6m and 17cmX1.5m strips with the 21cmX3m strips. Ruffle the longer stripe so that there will be no extra. She does a 1, 2, 3, pinch and sew method. Sew these together at the top Sew the satin ribbon onto the connection between the two layers for aesthetics Then sew the sides together to make it into a skirt. Sew the strips under the waistband. Remember that little flap? You're going to sew the tulle onto that or at least that's what it looks like to me. Sew the longest strip on first by ruffling it again as you sew it onto the satin inside Sew on the 2nd and 3rd ones and then cute off any excess Now sew down the waist band. Use elastic and clothes pin to slip in 3 layers of elastic, alternate as you go. Keep in mind that this is mostly my notes that I took while watching if anything Isaid was incorrect I apologize and I can add more detail this once I actually get around to making my own petticoat. Hope this helped you guys a bit. Obviouslly all credit for the tutorial goes to melikestea, I just tried to explain it in words and show you guys how to change the measurement based on your size.

For people having issue combining the layers that are different circumferences: What I like to do is fold my circle in half and mark each end with usually chalk. Then I fold it so each of those marks touch. It should still be in half but the edges will be at halfway between the first two marks. This marks the circle in quarters. I then will mark the halfway point between each of the quarter marks. So I have eighths . I haven't needed to go down to sixteenths.. but I may need to when I sew this. Then I sew each layer together just at the marks. This lines up the skirt and evenly distributes the larger and smaller layers. Then I sew in the round adjusting the fabric as needed. This may be really common knowledge but I've only just taught myself over the past few months and never heard anyone talk about it...so I hope it helps someone.

TinyBreakfastTable Actually I really appreciate this. I'm trying to save a certain skirt which had a lining. I knew I could just cut the lining to fit and then sew it buuuut I decided to fold the lining in half so that it'd be thicker and have a little body but I couldn't figure out how to make the folded lining (which is wider at the bottom) fit around/under the top part of the lining which attaches to the skirt without being l bunched over. Now you've given me a pretty great idea, which I'll try this weekend :) Thanks!

This is seriously the best pettitcoat tutorial I have seen! Most tutorials teach you to make a cheap looking pettit, ew. This one is just perfect and if you already know how to sew it doesn't look too challenging to make. I will try it soon for mi 50's inspired outfits, thank you for posting!

So glad I found this tutorial! I wanted to make my own prom dress so it would fit, not cost an arm and a leg and, so it would be perfect for me. The dress I am making is more of a 50s style and definitely doesn't look quite right without a petty coat. this is the best tutorial I have found so far!

Hi everyone! I had a series of problems in the past couple years, mostly due to university and I'm sorry I never got to finish the written version and I know I explain things too fast no matter how hard I try to be slower. I'm graduate now so that means I'll finally have the time to at least finish writing down this tutorial. hopefully I'll also have time to make new ones this year. thank you for the nice comments, which I didn't even had the time to check since I uploaded this, let's hope 2016 will be a better year. 💝

I really hate gathering especially of such long strips of fabric so to make free hand gathering or the way melikestea is doing this in this video easy, i take the piece and split it into as many even section as possible by just folding it in half again and again, then I do just as many sections with the other strip and then I just match them at the pins that i used to mark out the sections so that the gathering is as even as possible without bothering with annoying thread and tulle/netting that is really not easy to gather because it is so stiff.

I have a a longer black one but it was too loose and now I have been swing dancing for a year or so, now its for real to big. Its a Bettie Paige brand and was more than I want to spend now. I am so excited to make one like this. Also dresses are much shorter now than in 1940-1950s (at or past the knee) so I need a shorter one.

homa, then, are two layers of tulle, one that joins the waist without folds and another with pleats. the one with folds is the one that is made first and the one without folds is the last layer, which when turning the petticoat is between the fabric that serves as the lining and the layer that does have folds and which remains outside. ..true??

Look in the tulle section at your local fabric store, I'm sure an employee would be happy to help you find it if you aren't sure what to look for. It's just stiff mesh fabric that's often used in petticoats / crinolines, etc.

I use google to convert inches to cm, you just time "X cm to inches" and it shows a converter, the same happens for currency (e.g. X USD to GBP) and normal calculator (e.g. 234 / 5) :D 46cm = 18in 17cm = 6.7in 21cm = 8.2in happy birthday, btw! :3

@obscuraxxxx
@obscuraxxxx 10 жыл бұрын
21 cm x 6 m goes with the 17 cm x 3 m, if i remember properly. and the 21 cm x 3 m goes with the 17 cm x 1.5m, and you'll have two of these. so you'll end up with a 3m and two 1.5m strips. then you sew the strip ends together to make the circles and from here you sew the 3m (the 6mx21cm+3mx17cm) to the skirt base first (gather this layer to fit it to the 1.5m skirt) and then sew the two 1.5m circles (the 3mx21cm+1.5mx17cm) to the skirt without gathering. hope that helps! i had to draw all of this out so it made sense to me haha.

LittleMissLurker I buy it from a local store, I usually buy the whole 50m pack because I use a hell lot of tulle to make the petties I sell!

At first when she shows herself sewing the two 21cm strips together to make them 6m long they're plain black then while she's sewing the lace on the bottom there's flowers on them. So does she actually have 2 21cm x 6m strips, one is plain and one has flowers? She also talks about having three layers? How does she make the three layers? I've watched this so many times - over ten for sure - over the last month and half trying to figure it out myself, but it doesn't make sense. Can anyone who's said "It's actually not that hard" explain what you guys did in more detail please? :s

PanicLedisko Same problem for me. I have re-watched several times, with note pad and pen, but I am still confused about layers and which bit to sew to which bit. I think once the net is cut, there will be 6 pieces - 1.5m x 17cm, 1.5m x 17cm, 3m x 17cm, 3m x 21cm, 3m x 21cm, 6m x 21cm.So actually, I'm thinking that maybe the top part of the skirt is 1.5m x 17cm. And then with the other 2 pieces of 17cm width, you gather the 3m onto the 1.5m and sew both together onto the top piece. so top layer is one piece of net, with 2 thicknesses of net at the bottom - giving it's puffiness. It's really hard to explain in words, but this is what I will be trying this week! It seems to make more sense to me now I've tried to explain it! (hopefully....)

Sandra Szatkowski oh my gosh you're so sweet for responding!! Yeah I had to do the exact same thing with the pencil and notepad! I eventually figured it out, and it is exactly as you said with the gathering (originally I was putting the same lengths together and getting so confused) One day I sat down and realized I was looking at it all the wrong way haha I felt so silly! But yeah you're going to gather the 21cm x 6m to the 17cm x 3m, the 21cm x 3m to the 17cm x 1,5m and then again the 21 cm x 3m to the 17cm x 1,5m. Also I'm curious how well your sewing machine is with sewing tulle. I don't know if it's because mine is older but it either would eat it or it wouldn't pull it so I had to sew it with tissue (gift wrapping) paper and then carefully rip the paper off. It was a lot of work, but it's really awesome looking at it and being like "Yeah I made that!" Sorry I didn't get to you sooner! And good luck I hope this wasn't too late and that it helps you, thank you so much for responding!~

Thank you so much! for this tutorial. I really appreciate you making this video, I have one day to make it after work, I need it for a costume I am using for a birthday spotlight. Like you said on another comment, that it doesn't matter how you explain it there always be someone that won't understand. I agree. I hope you continue making this tutorials for all of us that need help, I would just appreciate if you explain step by step even do, you think is not necessary, for that person that is watching your video and has never done one before. If you need to make video 1, 2, 3 etc we will all appreciate it. Great Job!!!!!

I'm not a very good person when it comes to explaining things because I always feel like I'm saying too much. Honestly this video was about 20mins long and I reduced it to as short as it is because I'd always think "oh this is too easy, people will get bored if I ad this obvious part too" but aparently that's not how things work XD I just hope someday I'll have a better sewing space to make more tutorial and a better computer because mine keeps crashing when I try to edit HD videos :(

Adoro este tutorial! Assim que comprar tule, vou fazer! :D Tenho no entanto, duas perguntas! No tule também fazes french seams? A outra pergunta é quanto ao formato... este é mais bell-shaped, não? Tem um bocado de dificuldade em perceber ahahah ^^'' Adorei o tutorial! Continue! :) Obrigada!
