At last, I decided to just try and wing it and come up with what I thought would work and thankfully it did! I'm gladly sharing it to hopefully help you if you need a little more guidance or have no idea at all.

Love the final design, and I’m trying to make it now. Two questions: one, what’s the width of the fabric? And are you cutting on the fold? My netting is like folded over three times since that’s how it came off of the bolt.
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 4 жыл бұрын
The fabric I’m using is regular quilting cotton that is 44” wide. The tulle is 54” wide and the netting is 72” wide. I cut these on the fold as well and my strips were the width of the fabrics. I believe I cut them the way they were folded right off the bolt as well (of course I lined everything up so everything laid nicely). I hope that helps! 🤗

Literally the best petticoat video! I do have a question though! I want to add a layer of patterned lace on top of what you had so I can wear it by itself or underneath a skirt, how would I do that? Would I shift the other three layers down a bit so the new layer can fit? And how would I figure the length of the layer so it over hangs properly? I hope that made sense 🥺
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I wrote out a whole comment when you posted this and for some reason I guess it didn't post. Trying to remember what I originally wrote lol...Firstly thank you! To add your lace layer on top, I would cut out the lace fabric the same size as the lining pieces but add 1-2 inches to the bottom to accommodate for the poof of the tulle/netting. Sew it up the same way as well into a circle and hem or finish off the bottom of the lace. Once you have both pieces, line up the top raw edges laying the lace layer over the lining layer wrong side to right side and match seams. Then baste stitch them together so they don't move. Then you can add your waistband over both. Once you go to start adding the tulle, just move the lace fabric panel up out of the way while you mark and add ruffles. Then when your done just lay the lace layer back down over it. This is all in my head and would be what I would attempt if this was what I was doing. I hope this helps!

How did you decide how wide the tulle strips should be? My waist is 54 inches and I can't figure out the conversion math because six 16 inch strips is definitely not enough for me
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 5 жыл бұрын
I originally found an estimate from all the videos and other tutorials I have seen for petticoats, but the easiest way to keep the same amount of fullness for your waist measurement is I would just cut one more panel and waistband strip of the lining (the 5 inch and 17.75 inch) and add 3 more strips of tulle to each size row. Hopefully that makes sense! :)

This tutorial is so clear and easy to follow. But will this tutorial also work for somebody with a 27 inch waist? Will I have to make adjustments to the lining length so that it'll fit me better?
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Actually the only thing your adjusting to make it your size is the elastic for your waistband and you can cut it as loose or as tight as you want to fit your waist. I like this design because it can easily fit a big range of waist sizes without having to make any other adjustments.

Can I just use tulle without the matte netting or will that make it look less nice?
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 2 жыл бұрын
You can definitely just use only one. So the netting is really stiff and will hold shape much better and the tulle is going to give you more of a slight softer look so maybe more like a filler then anything else. Just keep that in mind depending on the shape your going for. If you still want to have the same shape with just tulle, you’re going to have to use a ton more of it to get the same effect as the netting. Hope that helps!

I'm hoping to use this tutorial to .ake a petticoat for my 2 year old daughter because this is the most clear instructions I have found for one, how would I convert down to her size, her waist is only 18in and doesn't need to be very long more of a tea length on her?
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I’m self taught and don’t have any experience resizing patterns drastically like that. Although, this is a very basic shaped pattern. If I were to attempt to size it down myself, this is what I would do: I would mostly focus on shortening the width of the lining pieces first. If she has an 18 inch waist, maybe cut off about 6-10 inches. So it’s like a loose fitting mini skirt. At this point you would cut the waistband pieces to this as well. You can probably leave the width of the waistband and elastic and be fine. Then you shorten it so measure how long you want the length but remember to add back your seam allowances. Then take some paper and make the 3 strips the same width size I make the tulle/netting strips and lay them out on your lining piece. From there, you can cut down the widths of each strip till your happy how they look and are spaced on the lining piece and then you can use those as a pattern measurement to mark you lining piece where they go and to cut your tulle and netting strips. From there it’s up to you how full you want the petticoat by cutting as many or as less of each size strip as you want but I would probably at least do 2 less pieces of tulle/netting for each long strip. You can always cut off more if needed once you start gathering them up and you see there’s too much tulle/netting then you want. I hope that helps and it wasn’t a giant explanation of confusion 😅

@Blacksheepmeet

The tulle and netting are all folded up like the fabric from the lining. The width is what they are off the bolt. Your just cutting lengths again like the lining.

I'm trying to figure out how I would lengthen this, would I just make the tool sections longer? Add a layer? I'm looking for below the knee length for a dress!
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 3 жыл бұрын
To start off, the lining you will take the original length measurement and add the difference of length you want. So that’s easy. Then I think the top layer of tulle you would follow the same by adding the difference to the length as well. For the shorter pieces I think you can do 2 things. You can either just add the difference like the other sections and I think that would make more of an upside down standard wine glass sort of shape or you can lower that bottom netting ruffle a little bit and add another layer of the netting in between. That might help keep that more full cupcake shape. So it just depends what kind of look your going for. Each you would just measure down adding the length you want to line up with the bottom edge. You can kinda try this out with pieces of paper to see how you want to placement and lengths. I would add about a half inch to an inch or so because it puffs up a bit once it’s gathered. I hope that was helpful or at least gives you a place to start! 😊

@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 3 жыл бұрын
Lol it is a lot of tulle. Each strip was the same width that is comes in off the bolt. So the tulle is 54” wide and the netting was 72” wide. So that multiplied by 6 does make it a ridiculous amount of yards so that’s accurate 😅

The lining has to be exactly your waist size or bigger bcz of the seam alliance and why is the waistband 10 inches i. Total when the waist is 36? How do we get waistband measurement plz I’m lost in that one
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 2 жыл бұрын
The measurements that you see on the lining: 5 inches is the length of the waistband. I will fold this in half width wise later to make a 2 inch waistband. The full size of the waistband is the length of the fabric opened up from off the bolt which for cotton fabric is usually around 40-42 inches. I cut 2 for front and back. The main body of the skirt is the same thing. The length of the skit is 17.5 inches. That’s not the width which is again the full fabric open off the bolt and I cut 2 for front and back. So when you sew the sides together the whole circumference of the waistband edge should be around 80inches. The elastic is the only thing you cut to you waist measurement. You can see all this better toward that part of the video.

Hi, I just made the underskirt part now trying to figure out what the length and height of each tier should be. My waist is 34 inches, what should each tier be to attach to the underskirt. Thank you!
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! They should all be the same like the video. You need to cut 6 strips of tulle at 16"wide, and 6 strips of both 15" and 10" wide in the netting. (The length of each strip is the actual width of the tulle off the bolt. I folded mine in half twice so it would fit in the video neatly while I cut the strips out.) Once you sew each strip together for each size, your gathering to the circumference of the under skirt. The only thing that your really going to be changing is the length of your elastic for your waistband. It you have a 34 inch waist, you will need two 33 inch pieces or if you want it more snug and hugging your waist, you want 32 inch pieces. I hope that helps! :)
@BakingwithWendy
@BakingwithWendy 6 жыл бұрын
WhereBlackSheepMeet Hi, Oh okay so should it be double the size of underskirt size each tier x2. That's what I've seen in other videos that don't attach to skirt itself but each tier of tule attaches to the other and then the underskirt.
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, for the life of me, I don't understand what you mean in the first sentence. It's hard when I can't see what you mean in person, although from what I understand that your saying, I know what your talking about when they sew the tulle layers together on the top and bottom. For this one, each layer of tulle will be sewn on to the underskirt separately at different points but all the bottom hems with the ribbon will line up with the hem of the underskirt. Your only sewing the same size tulle together to make a longer strip. You won't be sewing different size strips together at all.
@BakingwithWendy
@BakingwithWendy 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion, what I meant was do I take an 140 inch long strip of tulle for first layer and gather it to 70 inch circumference of the skirt and attach it to underskirt and then double the next strip of tulle to 280 and attach that to the next section of the underskirt. I'm only doing two tiers of tulle that will be attached to the skirt. Just trying to see if this method www.pinterest.com/pin/175358979221243045/ works for attaching to the underskirt like in your video or if I should just attached the two pieces of tulle the 280 to the 140 and the 140 then to the top of the underskirt. Thanks!
@Blacksheepmeet
@Blacksheepmeet 6 жыл бұрын
OOOO!! I see now! Yes, that will definitely work. Especially if your only doing 2 layers, the doubled length of the 2nd layer strip will help to give it the volume that 3 strips does.

Im sorry, this is going to come off extremely frustrated. But ive been looking online for tutorials, pictures, videos, for YEARS. And i can't find any help at all to make a bell skirt. Yours is at least a bit more detailed than most of the others. Everyone is so insanely vague that it's completely useless to me. Like, cut 10 inches, cut 15 inches, sew the edges together..... Inches what? Wide? Long? Is it doubled over? How wide is the bolt? Which edges? There's just no context for understanding and I'm just SO frustrated and I don't think I'll ever get to make my cosplay that Ive wanted to do forever 😭😭😭

I’m sorry your having so much difficulty. Idk what your sewing background is, but I wouldn’t consider this a beginner project. Also, sometimes sewing along will make a lot more sense. With that said, an easier way would just be to go and buy a couple cheap different length petticoats and layer them. Since it’s Halloween time, there are plenty to browse through and the thrift shops should have some inexpensive ones as well. Or Amazon is always a great alternative too. If you really have your heart on sewing one or its one people will see and needs to look a certain way, I would recommend getting a sewing pattern and you can always move around the ruffle placements till you get the “poof” where you want. The Butterick 6530 and Simplicity 1427 are a good place to start. I hope that helps at least give you a good alternative.
