My wife watched this for our jku rubicon. She makes tarps for rock trucks. She was able to use those materials and make a shade. Company let her use their materials and company time to make it.

Nice job. Do you have to make holes in it when it’s time to secure the top with the two inner screws?

for cutting the holes for the grommets its best to get a nail or metal dowel the same diameter as the interior of the grommet. Heat it up with a lighter or butane torch and push it through. It will poke a clean hole through the vinyl mesh, and it will also seal the ends to keep it from fraying.
@scottweber30776 жыл бұрын
I also want to add Harbor freight has a mesh screen product that has UV blocker coating on it for super cheap.

You can drill holes for the grommets using a wood block underneath and an appropriate diameter socket as your drill bit. Spin it at high speed on the mesh and it will heat up and melt through. You should have clean edges with no fraying. However, different brands of mesh may behave differently. So, practice a few times on a piece of doubled over scrap.

+Julio Pineda I dont have a TJ, so I found someone who did and has made this sun shade, here are the instructions: Cut the mesh down to 32x43. For the plastic piece that fits into the window header channel, I used corner molding used for drywall because it already had the holes in it. $1.97 Cut it down to 5/8x43" strips, 2 needed. I got the edging from walmart in the fabric department for $2.97. Bungees and grommets... Yep, you guessed it, walmart, in the camping section for about $10. for both. Sew the edge of the mesh between the two plastic strips and finish sewing the three remaining borders with the edging. Add grommets to the two back corners then 2 on each side and 2 in the back (evenly spaced). Bungee it on and go show it off. Oh yea... One more thing, make sure that you use heavy duty thread. Happy Jeeping!!!

Gonna try this out but with Velcro straps instead of bungee cords

can you keep that on year round and just put the hardtop or soft tops on over top of it?

How does it do for light rain etc? Repel water ok!
@HowtowranglerJeep8 жыл бұрын
+WxGuy In light rain if you are moving its not bad, but not what its intended for. One issue when it rains is when you stop at a light or something the water can pool then drip through onto you! ha ha

Good video kinda wondering what it cost you total ? And i guess i must be lucky cause i picked up a rugged ridge sunscreen 6 months old for 20.00 on craigslist and it smells like it just came out of the package and im sure you spent more then 20.00 as you said the seam sewing cost that but very good video if you want to do a diy sun screen. Thumbs ☝

+Joe Cobos I would go as thick as you can, like I said, I actually brought mine to a seamstress that specialized in boat sails, they did an awesome job for cheap!

what about using velcro as straps?
@HowtowranglerJeep9 жыл бұрын
nahnahxl Velcro wouldn't work with the grommets, plus I would be worried about how they would hold up at highway speeds. Ive tested the bungees on the highway and they keep the screen in place very nicely

To make the holes for the grommets you could also fold the fabric and cut into the fold.

I didn't see a huge difference in shade when you got under the screen. Would doubling up on the fabric still allow enough air in?
@HowtowranglerJeep9 жыл бұрын
I think it would, but I can tell you it does make a big difference. My wife would never want the roof off on a sunny day because of the heat and she couldn't do her make up, but now she loves having the roof off.
@Terquilla9 жыл бұрын
+How to Wrangler Thanks for the reply, Tom. It's cheap enough that if its not enough shade, I can make another one. I'm thinking that I may have it extend all of the way down to the bottom of the roll bar in the back and make a couple windows. Great how to!

Nice channel and video. The only problem is you can get these screens ready to go from ebay/amazon for like $50. You have probably $40 in materials and at least 2 hours of labour. I don't know about you but my time is worth mare than $5/ hour lol.
@RebelPhantom8 жыл бұрын
I got a question but first, Great videos and this has saved me about $75 i have already done a few other of your DIY mods so thank you!would you happen to know where the grommet locations on a 2 door should be? thanks
@HowtowranglerJeep8 жыл бұрын
+RebelPhantom So glad to hear Rebel! :) Here are measurements someone else posted for a 2 door, 1.This was done on an unlimited so 2 door measurements will be obviously different. I simply brought the roll of solar screen to the tailoring shop and had them cut the length to 64" and fold over a sew a 2" border all around. I can cut straight or sew so the $20 was well spent. 2. Figure out where you are going to install the grommets. I started in the front by by centering the material and marking it at the 3 loops that attach to the windshield. Next lay out the material on flat ground and and fold it over so that you can mark the spots on the rear of the shade that need grommets. Install the 6 grommets and also install grommets at each corner. Also take into consideration which side of the shade you want facing down and make sure the pretty side of the grommets are facing down. 3. Use your bungees to secure the shade to the 3 windshield loops and rear roll bar excluding the corners for now. All balls toward the sky. NOTE: the center bungee cord needs to be wrap around and under the rear light so that it doesn't keep turning it on. Ask me how I know. 4. Now for the rear corners: Unzip the rear roll bar at the corner and you will see a bolt head. Remove the bolt and install 2 washers and reinstall bolt. This is so that you have an anchor for your bungee. Attach bungee to shade, wrap the cord around the bar and anchor it to the bolt head. Repeat on other side. 5. Now for the front corners: Removed windshield corner interior trim by removing bolt and sun visors. there is a bolt in there that you will use as an anchor remove it add 2 washers and reinstall. Attach bungee to shade wrap it around the roll bar through that tiny gap anchor to bolt head. Repeat on other side. 6.Sound bar area: Measure 19-1/4" eye to eye from the front corner grommet to the sound bar and install grommet. Repeat other side Measure the same distance from the rear corners toward the sound bar and install grommets. 7. Adjust your bungees as required by either cutting them to length or simply putting a knot in them.

WAAAAAYY nice, man. Very informative and well explained. Excellent craftsmanship, and many thanks for taking the time to make and post he vid. I gotta make on for my 01 TJ cuz I fried last summer. I'm sure not gonna pay $100 for something I can make for less than half that. Plus, I'll get to brag cuz I made way cool Jeep stuff!

Great video man! What size grommets did you use? Another quick question too, how did the shade hold up with normal every day driving? Does it flap a lot or is it relatively quiet?
@HowtowranglerJeep8 жыл бұрын
+44fan182 Grommets are 7/16". Well its hard for me to say everyday driving because I live in the northeast, and dont have a garage so I dont have my top off all summer, but I do whenever I can and its held up great! I keep in on under the top year round and it doesn't get in the way at all!
nice work. but I think I'd rather spend the money and not the time on a spiderweb which I have and works great. let the hate comments begin....
