I don't have a dust collection system in my shop, yet. I was amazed at how much fine dust my thicknesser/planer threw into the air, making it a real pain to work with. Any time I wanted to flatten a board I would have to prepare for a barrage of dust which not only affected my health, but would also coat the shop.
This mobile cart doubles as a dust collector and the results were quite impressive. It uses the planer to push the chips and dust into a box, where furnace filter fabric traps the fine particles.

If I may make a suggestion - with your system your getting positive pressure buildup almost any size vacuum that reduces that pressure will help the planer blower do its job and you should see better performance but you have still built a great little dust collector no matter.thanks

Great video. Liked the roll away stand/dust collecter concept. The chips and dust collection is a problem without a central vacuum system. Getting ready to purchase a Dewalt 735 planner, your video was very helpful to what can be done to control the dust. Thanks for taking the time to explain how you controlled the dust on your planner. Jack Dotzman it’ll work great for that, I’ve heard that planer has a very powerful fan for extracting chips

Hmmmm. I think for the top filter I might use a furnace filter. Or air conditioning filter.

Robin, good design - As the chips generally bigger from a planer, instead of dumping into the bin put it on the garden as mulch. We also use it for chook bedding.

Thanks! Already offering it off to the in-laws for their chickens. This week I was working with cypress so it's probably the best smelling chips you could possibly have!

Shop vac will suck up those chips much easier. But this does the job! Put a product alert on pickles and gumtree, they will pop up pretty frequently.
@RobinLewisMakes
@RobinLewisMakes 6 жыл бұрын
Pickles up here hardly has any good stuff! I look at it twice a week, most of the time it’s shop fit outs. The problem I had with my vac is the blower forces harder than the shop vac can suck, so it ends up making it worse. Guessing a bigger vac would work though

I have my planer connected to my dust collector with a 4" hose, and I still get some chips coming out the front of the machine. It is not much, but there are a few. Just to let you know, you're is acting about right. That will be a nice solution for you!

Nice addition Robin, you’ll struggle even with dust extraction to get rid of all the chips & I think the dust chute on the Thicknesser blocks up, I was watching a demo on a Laguna industrial Thicknesser & same thing but everything helps mate 👍

Great idea!! You could try to off set the bottom dust door hinge for 100mm or so. So that when try to empty the box you can hang the wheels end on the edge of your bin (Like what you did in the video) and still be able to let the door drop open fully, if you get what I mean?
@RobinLewisMakes
@RobinLewisMakes 6 жыл бұрын

Just what I have been waiting for thanks man. I have a similar Hafco thicknesser which I have attached a small shop vac to and it does not work very well always clogs. Looks like using the 100mm extraction pipe is the way to go. Thanks buddy shop is coming on nicely.

Like the project! I just got a planer a week or so ago and need to get it mobile as well. I'm also planning a miter saw station along one wall and it would be nice if it could maybe be a little shorter and stow away under it somewhere. I have a basic shop-vac, and so far I've had it hooked directly to the exhaust. It fills up pretty fast, though!

Why didn't you put the short horizontal boards on the inside of the posts? The gloe joint would've been better and the casters would also have had a better surface to be bolted to.

Love the project as I’m looking to get a planer soon. Even with the locking casters do you find that with longer pieces that the cart still wiggles due to the swivel part of the casters still able to move?
@RobinLewisMakes
@RobinLewisMakes 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There's a little movement, particularly as the timber hits the rollers, but it's not bad at all. I actually use it without locking the wheels

doesn't need one as the planer blow out the chips in a way you don't need one. Nice work however a much more simple solution is to hook up a power tec dust bag to some PVC and rout it to the side of the planer. I use mine every day like that and works fantastic and much easier to empty vs the box he made.
