Hello, hot water works to help remove the plastic. You can also add a whole to the bottom of the bowl by sticking a piece of Styrofoam in the center of the bowl before pouring in the cement for drainage and remove it when it drys to get the whole, then just put something underneath your pot to catch the water. Also I have learnt that using one part sand and cement is better for making plant pots.

tape a cork at the bottom of the first bowl to sit the other one on. Then you have a drainage hole in the pot.

I was going to suggest putting straws in the bottom on the day you take it out of the mold. You can actually make holes in it the 2 and 3 day after it is poured. They have both spray on and paint on seal it. Thanks for the comment explaining why we need sealant. Jan in TN

FYI something you need to consider is sealing the concrete inside the pot. For succulents this is going to be less important because they don't require much water, but even they will eventually die. The reason for this is something called matric potential. This is just scientific for "concrete has small particles that pack tightly together, resulting in really small pores/holes that run throughout the solid form. These then create suction." It's the same reason water moves upward into a sponge somewhat appearing to defy gravity. In actual fact it's balancing between the suction in the pore and gravity. Try putting two see through straws or pipes in a glass of water. You will see the water level is highest in the straw with the smallest diameter, lowest in the larger diameter, but both are higher than the water level in the glass. Boom, you are witnessing suction, known as capillary rise for a single capillary or straw/pipe. When many of these are connected in a network of pores we revere to them as a matrix and the suction as the matric potential. Back to our pot, if you put potting mix into the pot, the particles of the potting mix leave big holes compared to the concrete. So, the concrete had more suction than the potting mix or soil. This means the water moves quickly from the mix/soil into the concrete. The plant can't access it there. Cheap sealant will fix this! Hope that was helpful and scientific!

It was definitely helpful and scientific! For succulents, though, they want the water to drain away quickly. Most people who grow succulents in containers recommend NOT glazing pots, and using something porous, for this reason. In watching this video, I was more concerned about the concrete causing the soil to become extremely alkaline as it leaches into the soil in the first few months. I don't know if I'd plant it up right away. We had issues with our patio garden at first from the foundation not being allowed to cure long enough before planting. I think I'd let them sit for a month or so before using. I may try doing a few of these over the winter so that they are ready to plant out in the spring.

If it cracked it may have dried too quickly. Try and leave it in the form for a few days and spray it lightly with a little bit of water once or twice a day. Definitely put rocks in the bottom of the bowl, it'll help keep the plants from sitting in water. Succulents especially don't take a ton of water.

You can glue a bit of doweling the center of the larger bowl. Sit the smaller bowl on top and weigh it down with rocks. Then pour the concrete into the space between the bowls. Tap sides to help get air bubbles out. When it’s set, knock out the doweling to leave a hole. Remember to grease the bowls and doweling to allow them to come away easier. You can also use a pipe instead of the doweling.
@ameliarose7276 жыл бұрын
I would also seal the concrete before planting.
@nrvana87759 жыл бұрын
I swear, I'm not trying to be a hater, but: If you're going to plant succulents, you ABSOLUTELY need a drainage hole. The roots will eventually drown, even with the rocks. The arrangement looks really good, though!
