ordered the plans and finished building this today. Nice design and it seems pretty strong. I did make one addition, I cut out small angle supports that I installed under the front and back rails where they attach to the legs. I didn't trust the pocket screws alone with the amount of use this will get. They look nice and are a big structural improvement.

Great plans, minimal waste, very easy design. Total cost of $450(including the cushions from world market) and a fantastic excuse to be in the shop for 6h. Good luck finding any patio furniture for less $... If you don't have a dado stack, like myself, you can just rip 3/4" off the base supports and fasten the 1x4s directly to the back rests. Doesn't look quite as clean, but when the pillows are on, it becomes a moot point. Great video, Brad!

Hey! just built 3 sets (3 seater, 2 seater, and 1) off of your plan. My patio looks amazing!!!! will be making the table next week.

@WMD You just use the 3 seater layout, and reduce the length to your needs.

All of the comments are positive yet there are over 400 "dislikes" for this instructional video. Are there people whose job it is to simply dislike every video they open? Sucks to be them, I guess. Great video! Thanks for sharing (I'm late to the party, but, oh well). Cheers.

First off, I'd like to congratulate you and your wife, everything turned out great! I am a little worried about the bench's ability to hold three people, since it seems to be held only by a couple of screws in each side. I don't think sagging will be a problem, but I would have cut some slats in the sides, so at least the bench part would be partly (about an inch) inserted into the sides, so it would "rest" on a solid piece of wood. More difficult to do the same for the back rest, but, then again, it's not really necessary for it, the back rest could have simply been designed 2 inches narrower to compensate. English is not my native language, so if anything is not clear, let me know, and I'll try to mock something up to show you what i meant.
@Fixthisbuildthat7 жыл бұрын
+John JeiJei Yeah, there could have been beefier joinery but the idea was to show the strength of the screws. It's holding up fine so far.

Hi, Thanks for posting this DIY video! Great looking sofa and a very inspiring video. I really want to try making this for my backyard. I have no prior wood working expertise. What are the absolute minimum tools required for this sofa and any advice you can give for a starter?
@Fixthisbuildthat7 жыл бұрын
+K M a drill and a circular saw and you could basically do this whole thing. A pocket hole jig (try the R3) and a orbital sander would really help as well. Just be safe and measure twice and cut once.

Great looking couch. Nice work. Do you find that the sofa back attachment to the seat base is a weak point? I see that you would pick up some additional strength to the armrest but overall, this seat back seems like it would weaken over time, if not immediately. Am I missing something here?
@Fixthisbuildthat7 жыл бұрын
+Jay Carr Jay, when glue is added to that joint you get a decent amount of holding strength. I agree that it could be stronger, but it's held up fine so far. Maybe an angled halflap would work here.

Your boards look amazing! Our contractor charged us a huge amount over 7 years ago to build our very huge back deck (dad wanted it like that). But he used VERY poor grade lumber. I think the lowest grade. Every board has knots, and one bourd used under the top rail was even worm wood! Full of holes and trails. Dad had a stroke about a month after they built it and we think that is why he didn't do anything about that. But fast forward and the wood is now giving us issues. Rough, so is swelling in the middle causing cracks, 2 boards are pulling up on the ends. Parts are even growing a yellow fungus! We stained it, but being in full sun alot, it didn't last, and Dad only did one very poor coat. The wood is so bad we went with that fancy stuff at lowes for bad wood, DO NOT GET IT! The deck is so big, that it took my sister and I a week to hand stain it. Then 2 weeks later it starts acting bad. It scratched with nothing hardly, and started peeling. The company refuses to ever contact us when we tried to claim their warranty. We have met someone else who had the same problem with it. Fast track over 2 years. The stuff is still doing major peeling and since it is a huge deck, it is mostly peeled but still going. We get a couple grocery bags full of strips every time we go out and literally just sit there peeling the stuff with our bare hands. Kind of a new family game of who can get the longest. But our deck looks like it hasn't been touched in over 10 yrs. And it isn't even that old. We don't know what to do! We just want a good looking deck just once! In the long run, we should have just done the composite boards. In the long run it would have been cheaper. We will probably try this if we can figure out how to get the rest of that junk off. It stays on just enough to be aggravating.
