Here is my latest update on my DIY plywood splitter... ⇊ More ⇊
Many of you have asked for more detail on the splitter I run on this car. So here is my latest update on my DIY plywood splitter, how I made it and attached it to the car. It is a cost effective and reliable solution.

These videos that go through a particular fabrication project (including the "why" reasoning) are great.

Thanks Yowie, really appreciate the feedback. Is there any elements of this car, or MX-5's in general, that you'd particularly be interested in seeing more detail on?

@@Bbeavis I don't have an MX5*, so it's more a general interest in the "how and why" of decision-making, fabrication, improvement, etc. by someone without drug-money budget or CNC on tap to run a race car BUT with an eye for what works, enough fabrication skills for the job and the results to prove the concepts. (*A family member has an NC being rebuilt with a supercharger. I have a Subaru and I'll thank you for not posting any more footage of the MX5 overtaking Subarus on track).

@@yowie0889 Ah, you perhaps won't like the results of my most recent track day last weekend with the WRX club then! But thanks for the comments, suggestions and feedback, :-)

Bunnings marine ply has held up extremely well for me. Much stronger than their eco-ply or structural ply range having additional layers of timber and the waterproof adhesive has prevented any rotting, shrinkage, etc. Like the birch comes at a cost though! I did find the eco-ply very good for making a mock-up before cutting into the $$$ marine ply! PS - loved the write up in mxtra this month. Hope to see you around the pits soon :)

Thanks. I think the oil paint I used was a good help in keeping this ply weather resistant. I think the baltic birch stuff was supposed to be lighter/stronger than the more generic bunnings ply too?

@@Bbeavis marine ply is noticeably heavier than the regular ply as it is denser with the additional layers of timber (has less voids). I used some oil based paint and spray paint for a little extra protection as well.

Marine ply is something like 10x longer lasting in normal applications. If u were to use reg plywood in a boat it would rot in weeks so thats diff but in a dry scenario like a splitter it should last indefinitely, barring crash damage of course. Looks great

Great to see a new video! Noticed your design is linear vs rounded. Could you share your thoughts on choosing that design?

Thanks, I just thought the straight edge design looked good.

Neat. Only question I had was if you did it again what would you do different?
@Bbeavis
@Bbeavis Жыл бұрын
Absolutely nothing, it's 100% perfect. No seriously there's so many things that could be improved, the mounting bracket shape/strength, the quick release-ness.... be great to have something that was even easier to fit/remove. Also a lighter weight but stronger material would be nice.

I think the disturbed air from your supporting cables, out front, is negligible.
@angry9901

There is a penalty for wires out the front, not as bad as having your window down though.
@Bbeavis

Yeah I'm sure for my use case it's negligible, if you were a real race team you might care.
