A few things that I would like to say that he left out that gave me some trouble You need to take off the alternator belt. You do this by loosening a bolt on the upper-passenger side-rear part of the alternator (12mm) I washed the lifters in gasoline. This worked in literal seconds and there isn’t a need to wash before puttting them back so there’s not a risk of water getting in

The first time i took the hood off my miata I almost threw it... i was expecting once i took the bolts out of the holes on the hinges it was going to be at least 50 or 60 lbs... nope, it's about 10 lbs, which surprised me and almost launched it lol.

this is actually a common way to see if your miata has been in an accident. When the hood gets damaged. 9/10 times it will be replaced by a steel aftermarket hood instead of the OEM aluminium hood.

Awesome video - just a tip, when you’re taking the lifters out it’s a good idea to make sure you separate them and make sure the same lifters go into the places where they came out of to ensure the wear patterns don’t cause leaks

@jtfoog5220

Gavin Bukouras no in that case they go in wherever. My tip just applies if you’re cleaning them, since each lifter will have slightly worn to the shape of its bore. The wear is measured in ten-thousandths of an inch, it’s probably not enough to make a difference but better safe than sorry

Hmm. I'm pretty stupid when it comes to cars, but I just watched another video where a guy changed his lifters and each liter was a different size/thickness. Meaning specific lifters go in specific spots. Idk about this exact car, but the one I watched had different numbers on the bottom of each lifter indicating thickness.

@duckmyass
@duckmyass 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kaxhow It depends on how hard you drive the car and how many miles are on it. The harder you drive and the more worn the engine is the more frequently you need to change the oil because what is happening is you have carbon that gets into the oil and it clogs the little holes in the lifter. As shown in the video. I do it every 5 thousand miles, but I don't drive it too hard, if it starts to get the sound I'll poor in some seafoam and then start changing every 4 thousand miles. Every Miata owner has to find out on their own how long they can go between changes... but if you catch the tick early you can fix it without taking the whole thing apart.

Great video my man, very good information. i really like that you include the relevant pictures from the service guide. I do have 2 things that i would have liked to see. 1. its always a good idea to hand turn your motor 2 full revolutions and seeing if its still on the marks after doing anything that could affect timing. this will allow you to see if you've made a mistake before turning the key, and can save you a lot of time and money if you work on motors a lot. 2. Wear them damn gloves! i've only been a mechanic for about 5 years now and i need to use a steroid cream on my hands cuz i sometimes didn't wear rubber gloves when working on oily parts.

@@bjarkio5951 thanks! I intentionally didn’t cover timing thoroughly. It deserves its own video, and forces uneducated people to go watch another video to understand that topic before doing this, and keeps the video short enough that the people who do already understand it don’t skim through and potentially miss other important steps. (Well, that was the goal) And as I’ve aged I’ve improved with my ppe useage, that’s definitely a good tip!

Mason, for reference, and oil filled lifter is supposed to be hard and non-compressible. It is the compressible ones that allow oil drain back or don't full fill because of sludge or oil flow restriction that cause the ticking. Were any of your HLA compressible between your fingers?

so before you take the lifters out of the head, you should be able to push down on them and they should give a bit when you push? I heard someone say that they should be rock solid, but you are saying they are seized when they are rock solid? I took a lifter out and apart today but am confused as to which ones are currently good, and which ones are bad. I'd say 85% of the lifters are hard as a rock when you attempt to push down on them, so those ones are the ones most in need of cleaning debris out of etc...? ?

I’m just super worried about messing with the timing while replacing the seals and taking off the cam gears. Do the cam gears go back on one way or could you accidentally put it back on slightly off? I noticed a little bump on the end of the camshaft does that go into an indent on the cam gear?

@TomlinPerformance
@TomlinPerformance 4 жыл бұрын
The way I’ve always done it is use a paint marker to mark where the belt is on the gears. So long as it goes back together and the markings line up it will be the same as taking it apart. If you don’t like that route you can always follow the manufacturers instructions to set timing, you can find these directions online. I believe you set cylinder 1 to top dead center and then all the marks on the gears will line up with the markings on the cover and block.

The selling point at intro was “it doesn’t cost anything/free” but if I’m going to wrench on a Miata back hunched over for 6-8 hours i want the peace of mind and guarantee to the owner that he lifters are new and minimize tue chance of the ”ticking” coming back from a bad lifter that won’t hold pressure or oil properly…. But can new lifters just drop in ?? Not head specific ? No letter or markings to designate a specific cut ?

You should read better mate, it clearly says 125 in-lbs And not ft-lbs which is about 10,5 ft-lbs or so (Don’t quote me on that tho)

When you install them, do they have to face a certain direction? Not only did i mix mine up when they fell out, i also just threw em back in there. 🥲 Theres a hole in each of the lifters, do they have to line up? Or does the grove in them send oil all around it?

Late reply but no it doesn’t matter, the lifters move around anyways when they’re in the engine so it’s perfectly fine to not have them in a certain direction
