No, you are NOT overthinking anything re the data sheets, you are spot on, they exist for a reason. Sure, some people who ignore it and do their own thing may get good results, but EVERYONE who follow the manufacturers instructions will get good results (if their base prep work was done right).

A good job well done there mate, it’s very hard on the arms and upper body ain’t it??, your lovely good lady reminds me so much of my wife when she had lymphoma and other problems, sadly she got the dreaded word again and this time couldn’t be saved, that was seven years ago, but like your lovely lady she was the bravest person I’ve ever known, having a laugh n joke with everyone and people would say “” has she really got cancer??”” It still amazes me that when I see folk like your missus that the outlook they have and the strength they show is outstanding , May I wish you & your lovely wife all the very best for the future, I can tell by the body language you adore each other, Well Done to the both of you, Take care. .

I had a couple of questions but you answered them when you sat down to sum it all up! The first question was Would it do better/last longer if you put several coats of bitumen on the hull? Indeed, it is necessary. You want two coats to make sure that every nook and cranny is sealed off to keep the water from reachin the steel and rusting out. To be safe, you put 3 coats on! I don't think you were over thinking it because I would have done it EXACTLY like you did. My 2nd question was about the availability of supplies for you to use, as compared with the items i have available for myself on the other side of the Atlantic. Here, there are a variety of different rollers, both short and long, for different surface textures. They have one with thick pile here that will completely saturate a really rough surface and will use quite a bit of paint because the depth of the roller pile will naturally hold more paint. You would probably end up putting on two coats in one pass. But maybe you don't like those because the possibility of air bubbles between the bitumen and the steel hull is fairly high. Is this something you have any experience with? This is, quite possibly, the worst comment that I have posted on your channel because I don't have one single comedic bit about blacking a boat. Being neither a genius, a professional comedian or a plagiarist, i truly have nothing. Having said all of that, i DID enjou the video and watched you like a HAWK so that i will have an idea how to manage this when i buy my narrowboat. That you for the not how to do but how YOU do video. Speaking of plagiarism, i did hear one joke that Philip told Matthew. He said he had a vegetable hoke but he was sure they would want to hear it because it is corny. BaDumDUM! So with that cornyjoke, i will sit down and shut up. 😁🤣😊.
@welldeckdiaries56103 жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca, we do have all those different types of rollers but I just took advice from the people in the boatyard as to the best way to apply the blacking, they do it for a living and use a brush the rollers. Love the corny joke 🤣😂

It was messy and gungey but did the job well. The worst bit was getting it off my fingers where i spilt it. Most satisfying when done and i reckon although you had a more vast an area, it was more straightforward. Knackeri g, but you know you've done as good a job as possible, one less worry👍👍👍

Your boat looked so amazing at the end! I went back to the vlog you did when this was done for you at Banbury 2 years ago but I don't think you mentioned the cost at the time? Still, even if you didn't save any cash at all & your muscles & tendons paid a steep price for doing it yourself this time, I think you're right that it's still well worth the peace of mind you'll now enjoy for a couple of years from being certain that each coat protecting your hull was given the curing time specified by the manufacturer. Plus, let's face it, even the best tradesmen will never have the vested interest that a boat's owner will have in meticulously ensuring that every single teeny nook & cranny gets its proper share of paint. Great job!

Think you did the best blacking video I've seen. Got a lot from it. Like your discussion about drying times. Yes, drying times are important, so many things happening with the paint and solvent. The splat it with paint and chuck it back in the water brigade just don't realise. The boat I am hoping to buy will be surveyed on Tuesday and I, also, have my second covid shot 😁. Then I shall be anti-fouling the boat with a new biocide free antifoul. Please keep your fingers and toes crossed. Another great vblog, thank you both.

Lots of work!! Good for you for doing it yourself. I've always done my own boat bottoms, and I repaint the bottom on each boat I've owned every year because of salt water here in the Pacific NW of the USA. Every 10 years, I have the bottom sand blasted and start over. And I use a roller (it's faster and easier on your hands and elbows and shoulders), never a brush. Does your left arm not work, Mark? Try it, train that left arm! 🙂 You'll be happier if you use your left arm half the time. Oh, excellent weed hatch upgrade, you should patent that! And I'm with you about the data sheets and time required for hardening off. No legitimate boatyard would do otherwise. Oh boy I know how it feels to have your boat in the air with someone else in charge! My 1939 boat was 42 feet long by 12 feet wide. If I could have found a haulout with a "lorry" like you folks use, that would have been great, but here we use straps and a very tall structure to lift/raise the boat straight up out of the water using those straps. And the boat swings and sways like crazy. Nevertheless, when the boat finally "splashes" and gets back in the water, I think every owner breathes a sigh of relief. Oh, and yes! when I was in my boat when it was "on the hard" on land, I would run into the cupboards and cabinets inside the boat because it was NOT swaying with the water. What an odd feeling. 🙂 Great video, great info, perfect in every way. Thank you!

Greetings to you both. I have had similar experiences to yours. I would go further and say that boat yards have responsibilities and a duty of care to look after boaters. Some DON'T and put the £ before morality. If you really really wanted to splash out (No pun intended) next time blacking is due then go the " whole hog" and sand blast and hot ZINC coat the hull before applying ' two pack ' to the hull. This was a very instructive vlog and I enjoyed watching well done. Keep safe dry warm and virus free.

You did well Mark, we always preferred 2-pack epoxy and it is better if that goes on from new so if you are considering going for that next time you are thinking along right lines to have the hull sand blasted first. We always worked in a dry dock to black ours and did it ourselves and always gave it 24 hrs between coats normally 2 coats was sufficient as once you get it coated with 2 pack epoxy when it needs doing again we just power washed it and wire brushed to give it a key and obviously removed any loose paint before recoating. the 2 pack stayed on well. Goes on well with a roller, only thing with that is once you mix the 2 parts you need to get it on. Never an easy job and to save cost we always did ours ourselves every 2 to 3 years. Quite a big job sandblasting as it gets in everywhere and would need to try and seal the vents/ doors and windows etc. Best wishes with your radio therapy Debs. Love following your progress, its been so nice you have shared this journey with us all and shared your home with us to, some vloggers do not do that and have found some keep you more at arms length. Interesting hearing your costs. We have a 70ft wide beam on the Thames. She weighs in at 37 tons and is lifted out by a travel hoist. The lift in and out alone is £2400. We are having her 2 pack epoxy this week and the total cost is going to be £5300. My next boat is going to be a narrow boat on the canals up north as it’s far cheaper. Ok so 2 pack doesn’t need to come out quite so often, but there isn’t much in it I don’t think and it’s easier to repair bitumen blacking as you go.

Haven't finished watching yet, stupid question, does it smell like creosote? That's what I am smelling while I watch. It was one of my faves as a kid. Loved it whenever the old tarbaby went by. Deb you look amazing😒😘💕. You have the most beautiful complexion, when I found out your age in another vlog I actually dropped my cup of tea🤔😁🤗? I really thought you were in your early 40s. You have both come through so much, I know how hard it is as I have beaten cancer twice. Eight and a half months chemo, five and a half weeks radiation for my second cancer. Word of warning dear, radiation will wear you out. Sleep whenever you can. Mark, you are a whole support team by yourself. Such love is rare nowadays. You are both in my thoughts and prayers, now back to,the vlog😘😘💕🤗😀💕.

Interesting point about the time before going back in the water after the last coat. Although we did ours ourself we were 'reliably' informed by the boat yard we would be ok to put final coat on in the morning and re flood the dry dock to come out late afternoon as the paint would be dry... FORTUNATLEY we plan to come back out next year anyway (once we have saved up for shotblast and 2 pack!). So hopefully we will be ok. But it does seem some of the 'experts' at the boatyards perhaps aren't as 'expert' as we are led to believe...
@welldeckdiaries56103 жыл бұрын
We was assured by the boat yard 2 years ago it was ok, but after reading up on it I would argue it. The solvent in the blacking needs to evaporate and dry out properly in the air for the blacking to fully cure, this wont happen under water
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget3 жыл бұрын
@@welldeckdiaries5610 I think that's the key to what we've quickly learned - RESEARCH everything! Next time we are blacked we definitely won't be going straight back in!

I was wondering if the product could be thinned a tad (?) if so you could then use a large heavy roller for fast application but giving 3 coats instead of 2.
@welldeckdiaries56103 жыл бұрын
It can be thinned for staying on. I did do 3 coats, just took advice on brush first coat then roller the next coats

Nice job on that blacking. Seeing you do it in time-lapse, makes it seems to go quicker. Re. your weed hatch. I have seen other hatches with that bottom plate, I thought, that was the Standard ! Could it have been made Flush with the underside of the counter-stern. That way would reduce your CD factor and make the boat go faster ! 5555 ! You two are looking more relaxed, So keep safe and well ! Stu xx

When you paint over the white spots isn't that just sealing the corrosion under the paint? Spraying/brushing with rust converter first sounds like a good idea.

Not being picky - just curious ! I thought power washing/jet washing was to get the crud and green bits off. I thought then there was some mechanical rubbing/scrubbing done to get anymore hard crusty bits off, or scrub any rust away ?
@welldeckdiaries56103 жыл бұрын
I think that depends on the state of it after the pressure washing. The blacking is designed to cover bare steel but as you say it there was rust encrusted areas flacking areas then scraping or sanding would be needed
