Today I am showing you guys how I made these custom waterproof cushions for outside as well as some throw pillows for added decor! The pillows consist of material I have accumulated over time either from scrap pieces or dollar tree.. with cushion inserts I have thrifted! The main cushions are actually thrifted white bed sheets and underneath it all consists of a plastic lining I actually got on clearance for around $4 from walmart.. but they sell it any big box store, it is 4 MIL thick plastic lining for putting around your window to help with insulation in the winter time (drafts).. I also used an old mattress topper that was 4 inches thick cut apart to make the custom cushions!
I ended up creating everything according to the custom size (where each cushion would be setting) and or pillow.. I knew this pallet couch I made would cost a lot for custom cushions so Instead of ordering them this year... I decided to go a cheaper route and make my own!
video of me creating the boho pillow/striping the canvas bag apart: • DIY BOHO PILLOW COVER
The material I used for the coating was 100% silicone caulk here: www.menards.com/main/paint/ca...
mixed with odorless mineral spirits here: www.menards.com/main/paint/so...
**USE GORILLA GLUE HOT GLUE WHEN USING THE HOT GLUE!!** It is important to use this type of glue because it is more or less weather proof. it won't crack or break in the hot sun or cold or rain. it keeps its bond!
The rest of the stuff was either thrifted, from dollar tree or I had on hand already ( from previous clearance shopping)..
So I hope you enjoyed this video and found it informative, if so give it a like for me! LIKE BUTTON!

Soooo clever!!!! Everything from the fabrics you used to your waterproofing mixture!!! Brilliant! Thank you!!!

Ofcourse! I would recommend to remove the cushions (if you make similar ones) from the sofa if it rains, they are waterproof but ideally you don't want to ruin your hardwork!

The plastic is a great idea. And the mixture, wow😯 i should definitely try that.

For a temporary solution it worked for a couple of years - if you take care of them they would last a long time - for instance bring them inside or on the porch or in a garage or shed when not in use - and to make them more comfortable bring pillows and blankets outdoors when sitting on them. These are suggestions ofcourse but eventually I will buy nice cushions ALSO a nice tip if you do happen to have large thick foam similar to this you can use - Amazon sells waterproof cushion covers in any color but the sizing is Mainly why I made these custom cushions - I couldn't find the size I needed. I have since then thrown these cushions away due to not taking care of them 😞 but the pallet couch is still there 🙃

And they aren't the most comfy either you hear the plastic when sitting on these! Definitely not something to replace buying them but a quick fix if you have stuff laying around to make these with. At some point I'm going to get cushions on sale since I know have extra money for things like that

Great idea with the plastic underneath. I’m going to do that. But I’m going to use fabsil gold waterproofer for tents. But I did use that mixture as a seam sealer on a old tent and it really worked. Well done. Looks fab.

Wow great job! Thank you for the tutorial- it was very helpful 👍🏻💕 Just an idea, but using a spray adhesive would work well for the plastic lining. I’ve used it to attach upholstery foam together before and once it was attached it would not separate! 😅

They are - but I will have to add in these did not hold up (my own fault) I left them outside over winter and they got mold - so definitely store them properly if you go through all this work - I will eventually tear out this entire wooded area that we see here in this video.

Regarding the popped hot glue seal: what if you put down a bead of that silicone caulking to seal the inner plastic and the fabric instead of using hot glue? I've never tried caulking on fabric so I don't know how quickly it would bond the edging, but I do think it would offer a much stronger seal on the seams, as well as being waterproof of course.
@DavidOwenCreates

That’s a great idea! Thank you for throwing that out there bc my plan I mean it worked for a season and if I took care of these (took them in the shed during winter) I’m sure I could have them last a little longer but it’s fine, I plan on taking this entire pallet porch and couch apart this upcoming spring so redo my backyard area next summer. I can’t wait!

@DavidOwenCreates
@DavidOwenCreates Жыл бұрын
I have not remade this project since then - I do have some outdoor pillows I made with dollar tree rugs and hot glue and they've been outdoors since I made them a few years ago - never took them inside and they have held up against all sorts of weather!! So those pillows I def recommend but these outdoor cushions - if you have the scrap materials they'll last as long as you take care of them - otherwise I would buy new cushions on clearance from Target with scotch guard or get a scotch guard spray to help repel water and make them more water proof 😉 clearance is always the best option, then DIY

How well did the waterproofing solution work for you? Did it work or did the fabric still soak up water?
@DavidOwenCreates
@DavidOwenCreates 3 жыл бұрын
It works just fine, the only problem was the hott glue came undone on the fabric, the cushions still dried out in the sun though, I would use gorilla hot glue if you use hot glue for this type of project.

Thank you!! I def wanted a budget friendly option as custom cushions are quite expensive - I do want to add to make sure as with most items to remove prior to winter and store in a dry place ( mine got ruined with the snow) unfortunately 😐 I put all that work in these - I would say to using a better hot glue something that's weather proof I heard gorilla glue is awesome. And perhaps spray the actual foam with a flex seal before adding them inside the plastic 🤔 Other than that I have had other cushions I made that are still going strong 3 years now so I just depends on how well you take care of the stuff

You can use a flat iron (straightening iron) to seal edges. Just fold the plastic over/ pinch it together, then fold a piece of foil over the plastic and then flat iron slowly on a low setting until you get a good seal.
