DIY Paddock Stand - Build Video

Description:
I’ve needed a paddock stand for my ER6N ages. Since they’re pricey here I decided to try and make one myself.
It's made from scrap angle iron, 2 short pieces of threaded rod, old roller blade wheels and a couple nuts and bolts. I had everything lying around so it effectively cost me noting but time and some welding rods.
It is adjustable, I just have to loosen the bolts, slide it out and tighten again. The day before I finished the build I got given a production paddock stand [thanks Mike], so I'm not sure how much use this stand will see.

Awesome, show us how it turns out. At 1:20 I have an angle of 65 degrees, you could make it closer to vertical, say 75 or 80 degrees. Good luck

Cool man. Thanks. Yeah it's not winning any beauty competitions but it works pretty well and is strong. I'll see over the long term if I'll need to weld in braces for the angled bars but so far it's holding up fine.

Man, what I said sounded way to harsh. Sometimes it's easy to forget most of our shiny, modern, standardized and price-tagged world was built like that. In the end, it's only functionality that really counts. It's pretty cool to be able to build things like that, much respect :)

How would you suggest altering this DIY for stand that has the flat rests? Not sure if the proper language but my bike is a cruiser and can’t have pegs it would use the flat small square piece to balance on.

Hi Marisa. Take a look at the link below, it shows a factory made stand the type of which I think you're referring to. www.amazon.co.uk/OXFORD-BLACK-MOTORCYCLE-PADDOCK-STAND/dp/B003BF69J2 If that is the case, then instead of cutting grooves for the bobbin pins (3:04) you'd just drill holes and fabricate a bolt with a cleat welded to the end (angle iron) for the square piece to rest in. I'd pad the angle iron with some thick rubber to protect the bike. Without knowing what bike you have or what the swing arm looks like I can't be 100% sure though.

Every now and then I just do a search on gumtree. There was a wrecked bike posted a while back that I got a couple parts from. The dealers will be able to help but it'll cost a lot. (I'm in PE, Automotorcycles are the guys this side that I speak to for parts) Next best bet is ebay, you can get a full set from china for just under R4000 including shipping I think, they're unpainted. How bad are yours? There are plastic rebuilders that do repairs, then you'd just need to respray them.

@@gregsmith_za Its only one of mine, and its not that bad. Bike fell over and just cracked it. I do believe it will be fixable, I just like the idea of new ones.

@@Phoen1x44 if its just the side, you can get them on ebay. I saw a set from the US for around R1300 including shipping. You'd still need to pay someone to spray them if you don't have the equipment to do it yourself.

Thanks man! If you're going to make one I'd say change the angle to be a bit more vertical, say around 80 degrees. I don't see why you couldn't leave the bike parked like that, but I'd probably not do it over the long term. "IF" something happens then you'll find the bike on it's side. I only use the stand when I'm oiling the chain or working on the bike. The rest of the time it uses it's own side stand. Good luck!

@@gregsmith_za , thanks a lot for sharing your viewpoint. In fact, I'd make a paddock anyway. I really appriated your tutorial. The reason why I'd like to let it on a paddock is due to kids running around the garage of the building where I live. It's not allowed, but they access the garage and a couple of time I've seen they're involuntary tapping the bike. Then I got scared they drop the bike. This bike is heavy. Somebody can get hurt. I've talk to their parents, but kids are hard to control.

Hey man. Yeah you're right, I mentioned in some other comments that if I did it again I'd have made the angle closer to vertical, say around 80 degrees. Definitely didn't need to be that much. Amazing. I have seen tons of videos and no one else used angle iron. angle iron is simpler to use especially to make slotted holes and hold the swing arm spool and at the same time strong AF. Brilliant and simple design! Also you make coping cuts look so easy :) Did you have to weld gussets to add more strength to the 2inch angle iron or not at all? I ordered a paddock stand for my Tiger 1050 but motivated to build after watching your video.

Thank you for your kind words. Appreciate it. I didn't have to add any gussets, there might be one or two but that's left over from the steel workbench I cut up to make the stand. But it doesn't hurt to add gussets or other bracing. If you're going to make one, change the angle from 65 degrees as I have it to around 80. It'll work better and have less load on the joint. Hi Akarsh, I have a cheap inverter welder. 200 Amp. They're also called a stick welder or arc welder. I'd probably never weld something thicker than 5-6mm so a 200Amp welder is fine for my hobby type of use.

Hey well done. Home made rules and good to see you using a stick. I'm making one from old water pipe atm. If you were to make it again would you modify anything? Angles, heights etc.

Thanks man! I'm happy with the height, the wheel just needs to be off the ground. But ff I had to do it again I'd change the angle closer to vertical. At 1:16 instead of 100mm offset I'd change it to 50mm or a little less, which would make the angle closer to 80 degrees. With the spools 100mm behind the wheels of the stand it's very stable, you wouldn't accidentally knock the bike forward but it's a bit overkill. I'm using 5mm thick angle iron so I didn't need any bracing but if you're using tube maybe add a little bracing. I'd be keen to see the end product so let me know when you're done.
