2 YEAR UPDATE: It's been 25 months since I PlastiDipped the chrome on my truck. It's holding up amazingly well in most places and so-so in others. The front grill took the brunt of the damage from bugs, rocks and more but still looks pretty good. The handles have slowly been peeling back, since I wasn't able to reach the insides of them, but they're still holding on well. The badges on the side look perfect, as do the side mirror housings. I'd say it's either time now, or maybe in the next six months to peel the grill/bumper area and reapply. It has holes peppered throughout ranging from pin prick holes to small pebble sized, probably all from rocks hitting it. I've got this truck listed for sale right now so I won't have any more updates but overall I'm super impressed with how it came out as well as how well the PlastiDip held up - especially for a rattle can application! I'd do it again for sure, and probably will.

Hey mate, did you end up peeling it now? Curious to know if the third-party enamel would have caused it to flake in tiny pieces making the removal a real pain as I've seen in other videos
@jameszemotel10479 күн бұрын
Thanks for the update! I was just thinking about sending you a question about durability. I have the same grill on my 2017 Tundra, 1794 edition; and I've been looking at options. One of the knocks against PlastiDip is that it gets pocked full of holes--especially on leading edges (esp. grills and bumpers) due rocks, sand, bugs, etc. I was hoping your final layer of enamel would increase the durability; but it appears it only made a slight difference. I'm likely going to buy something aftermarket; or possibly paint my grill (sand, self-etching primer, enamel paint). We'll see....

This was a great video. My only suggestion is that if you can remove the part you’re dipping, then do so. It makes it easier to dip at getting all angles and limit your overspray than when the part is connected(rims, trim pieces etc).

You would, yes. But this stuff holds on quite aggressively. It’s still on that truck years later. The grill is looking a bit hammered due to bugs and debris so it’s probably time to redo it but doesn’t peel off in big sections ever.

Overall it's looking great. There are, however, a few small holes where either rocks have hit it or maybe it's from something else but if you look close you can see the holes. @LRN2DIY2 жыл бұрын
Depending on where you use it, it can last years. The PlastiDip on my truck grill has some holes in it and probably needs some touchup at this point (almost two years in - especially where it's such a large flat grill) but the car I painted with it was holding up beautifully 18 months along until we had to get rid of the car because it was totalled.

@@Featured_YT Haha! So sorry. I thought your comment was on my video about replacing the stereo. My bad. For the paint, we're coming up on two years now and here's the update: There are several small holes in the front bumper, the part that gets the most abuse with bugs, rocks and such hitting it. The door handles that I did a better job on still look and work great. One of them I didn't do as good of a job on getting back behind it a bit and it's peeling. The mirrors look great and the emblems look great too. I've heard that around 2-3 years they start breaking down so we'll see but even if it started coming off tomorrow I'd say it's worth it. One night worth of work for two + years of a nice new color is great with me.

It’s doing pretty good in general but definitely not perfect. The grill has tiny holes in it in a few places where rocks or bugs have hit it and maybe corrosion has occurred. The emblems on the side look perfect and the door handles have done great. Side mirrors look really good too. I think the grill is just a highly vulnerable area so it has taken the lion’s share of the wear.

Yes, it will have to be redone or removed at some point. Everyone's results seem to vary but anywhere from 1-3 years is what I'm seeing. The chrome underneath is in great shape so removing it won't be a bad thing when the time comes.
