I tried this out with my son when he was about 5 or so. That was 30 years ago. We didn't have that super shiny tape that you used. We only used aluminum foil. It warmed up a hot dog after a considerable time but nothing like lighting anything on fire. This was in Florida in midsummer.

When my daughter asked to try coffee my wife asked what I thought. I assumed that, like most kids, she would try it, spew it and that would be the last I would hear of it for years. What I hadn't counted on was the fact that my wife's coffee is basically a milkshake with a dash of espresso in it. I said yes, and now she's hooked. Dad fail.

My son and I just did this for his science project, but didn't start with a satellite dish. We laser cut rings that when stacked formed a parabaloid. It was really impressive how hot it got even without being very well focused. In fact, for the purposes of cooking stuff, it might be better to have it slightly out of focus. Anyway, he roasted a marshmallow and a hotdog in less than about 15 minutes, with a lot of other kids ooo-ing and ahhh-ing. So much fun! Cool to see the kids enjoying it!

Gee, I feel bad now. My son started stealing mom's and my coffee when he wad around 6 and we finally gave up and bought decaf for him around age 9. That being said, this was the same child who at age 18 months would crawl behind the couch in super stealth mode to sneak up and grab my beer from under the end table in the evenings and somehow put it back after taking a few sips without me, or mom, noticing. I suspected something was up when for some reason I sudenly started going through a 6 pack in a week instead of 2 and finally figured it out after just happening to spot the beer floating mysteriously throuh the air to under the table one night.

Dishes with motors are made so they can point at different towers to receive signals that they wouldn't pick up from one particular tower. One tower might be American broadcasting and another might be across the river like a Canadian broadcasting tower, this is why new free to air digital antennas need more than one vertically mounted pannel pounted at different towers to pick up more channels from more towers.
