Very nice cart with attention to detail. Now get you a Byrd Helix cutter head and you will love that planer. Installed one in mine a few years ago. Way better than the knives.

That’s the word I was looking for “passive”. I was expecting to see a shop vac or the ability to plug in a dust collection system.
@wrbuilt2110

I will have a central dust collection system in the near future, but for now having the shop vac hoses all over the place in addition to the extra noise drives me crazy! So this cart was a simplified solution of that.

Thank you for your video,I love the look of your cart it’s modern and looks like a nice piece of furniture but most of all totally functional. When I saw you put the bin on the bottom I realized I really don’t need to hook it up to my dust collector because it does have enough power to push all the dust particles out, great idea. I like your footage as well on your video trying to work on my video skills. Once again thank you so much

Excellent design and finish! One of the best I’ve seen. Videography was also well done. Two suggestions- use a removable air filter (rated down to the micron of dust particles) and configure the stand for easy removal and insertion for the filter (similar to how easy it is to remove the bin). Maybe add a boot seal to where your hose passes through the table top (if you begin to notice dust coming back up through the tiny gaps

Thanks for the feedback, Denny! I had planned on running a boot or possibly making a large grommet for the hose. Just using the cart to see if it’s needed. I think if I run the planer inside more I’ll need to upgrade the filter to a lower micro as you suggest. Thanks again for the comment!

Unreal cart sir. Nice work... I'm in love with your design especially the center post! I have that same planer. I have made one change in the planer and that was to add a helical cutterhead (not that it would make any changes to your design).

I really like the cart design! I like it so much I think I’m going to build a new cart for my planer based on your design. Do you experience any racking, “side to side flex” without any front support? It looks like the bulk of the support is that 6 x 6 post. I also noticed that you didn’t use lag bolts to mount the 6 x 6 post to either the upper or lower platform. In hindsight do you think that would’ve been better or are the screws that you used sufficient?
@wrbuilt2110
@wrbuilt2110 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Chris. Surprisingly there is no sagging or racking. However, I think that’s likely because the hickory flooring is all nailed into the framing (the framing is all screwed together) and weight of the Planer sits pretty much directly on the top of the 6x6. Which helps not stress those outer edges. All the framing is screwed into the 6x6 post with 3” construction screws. Let’s just say it’s a bit overbuilt and hope that I never move 😂. If you end up building one you’ll have to send me some pictures!

Thanks, Lucas! This model of the Dewalt planer has an extremely strong fan. Before attempting to contain the dust/chip collection the planer would shoot the chips about 20+ feet down my driveway. I was slightly concerned that the hose size I used could be an issue, but mainly because everyone else I saw used the 4” extraction hose. However, I figured that since I already had the smaller hose I could try it and easily upgrade later if it became an issue. I have been using it as is for a month or so and it’s working really well. The upside is the smaller hose doesn’t get in the way of the material like the larger 4” hose could in my setup. Hope this was helpful.
@photojed
@photojed 2 жыл бұрын
I can tell you from experience you don't need a powered dust extractor. I use a smooth bore PVC pipe right into a covered garbage can. If you don't cover the garbage can sawdust will fly out everywhere.

That is a really sharp looking cart! Possibly too nice for my shop, it might just roll out spontaneously if it sees how crappy the rest of my shop furniture is. :) But I'm absolutely stealing that slanted central pillar.

The cart is certainly well done but isn't it a bit of overkill for a planer? It looks like furniture. What does this thing weigh? The dust bin looks pretty small for a planer. IME planers create piles and piles of shavings. I'd think a larger bin would be in order. I replaced the stock dust port with a vertical port and connected that directly to my DC. The vertical port works better and moves it from the back to the top, where it's out of the way. I then use either the planer or drum sander by rolling its cart under the DC hose (hung from the ceiling). Your filter is a good idea but like others, I think it should be easier to remove. OTOH, a quick pass with a shop vac should be good. Planer shavings are pretty large so I think this filter will work fine. Overall, nice design and execution.
@wrbuilt2110

Thanks for the feedback, K Williams. Very much overkill 😁. It’s extremely heavy… I hope I don’t move anytime soon! I’ve been looking into a centralized dust collection system and I think it’s something on the horizon very soon. Plus, the summers here down south are brutal so it would be nice not to have to go outside to cut something. The ultimate goal is to not use the dust collection system on the cart unless it was outside the shop, but just haven’t made it that far yet. Soon!

@@wrbuilt2110 Well, my shop in my previous house was split between the attic and garage. I lived in East-central Alabama at the time so I understand woodworking in the summer. 😅 We've since moved to GA but I now have an unfinished basement all to myself. It's still hot but the basement isn't too bad and I put in a small window AC for August. You'll appreciate dust collection. I just have a cheap bag-style DC but it is 2HP, so works.
