I was a plasterer and finish carpenter for over 25 years. The way lath works is the structo light or base coat has to go inbetween the lath and catch on the backside in order for the plaster to be attached to the ceiling. If there is old plaster inbetween the joints, like there is in this video, and you do not remove the old plaster inbetween the lath before putting a base coat up, all you are doing is putting a coat over the lath and it is not adhering through the lath and curing on the other side to create a solid piece. The next time you do a patch like this, make sure you take a spackle knife or a 5 in 1 and knock all of the old plaster through the lath, so that all of the lath is open, then start your scratch coat. You’ll never have to patch it again, if you do it this way.

I'm glad someone commented with the correct way of doing it, hurt my eyes watching this
@kona7028 ай бұрын
I noticed this right away as well. Definitely has to go through the lath to hook on the backside. It might hold. It might not. But more than likely it will eventually separate years down the road.

Do you recommend removing the insulation and any plaster that’s above the lathe before starting to apply plaster weld and basecoat?
@andygarcia35852 жыл бұрын
You could also hang drywall, mesh tape the joints, easy sand the patch with at least 2 coats, then sand down the patch.

I’ve owned a couple of homes with plaster and not sure if I agree with his patch method. I’ve stapled screen mesh to the lath to prevent further cracking. At least it looks like he wet the lath.
@yolisurich40252 жыл бұрын
Structolite works good on first coat . Then you can use drywall mud.
@huejanus55052 жыл бұрын
I’ve done hundreds of repairs like that in old houses. Use 1/4” or 3/8” drywall to patch or fill the bulk of the hole first. Makes for a more solid repair.

We use 3/8 or sometimes 1/2 blue board

Am I missing something? Aren’t you supposed to secure in a steel mesh? Not sure how secure ceiling plaster on wood is.
@davidkramer3332 жыл бұрын
You have to push it in hard enough to key it in. That is how all plaster ceilings are held up
@marke45762 жыл бұрын
Little tip. Use spoung to wet the wood before applying plaster.
@Guardducks2 жыл бұрын
A bigger trowel would save you some time , but with that being said using a bigger trowel takes getting used to, but you do and it makes a world of difference.
@DanSoloPlastering2 жыл бұрын
Nice try but sadly won't last. You should have raked out between the lath like the picture on that tub of patching plaster
@benpainter53842 жыл бұрын
You have to wait minimum 2 months before you Primering. With this process

just plater it properly the english way that would crack with any movement because the lats are flimsy

Do not wet the lathe. It needs to suck the plaster into it for a tight bond.
@connormcindoe6993 Жыл бұрын
Wrong, dry wood will suck out all the moisture of the plaster and can cause it to crack. He should have removed the old plaster from between the lathe and made a new mechanical key for the plaster to hold.
@ronemtae34682 жыл бұрын
You should spray the bare wood with water

I’ve done a lot of remodels in 100 year old houses. This is an okay way of doing it. We would always use 5 minute mud, lay it on, then sand it over in 20 minutes.

I mean I'm no expert but I would of cut some ceiling to size and just patch the outside maybe 🤔 🤷

You’re not gonna find drywall the same thickness as plaster. When patching plaster you chip until you find an area where the keys are all intact
