This video helped me solve a problem with a completely unrelated project I have in the planning stages. I’m planning a wooden snake cage with front-opening sliding glass doors, and I could not fit the life of me figure out how I was going to get the doors into precut dado tracks without taking part of the frame apart and reassembling it around the glass doors. Your instruction of making the top track deeper just solved this conundrum. Thank you.

Hi Chris. Nice build. I've made a few similar builds and one advice from me to you, free of changer, would be ventilation holes under the mattress, and plenty of them. Even with a latex core, I've had issues with moisture build up between the warm mattress and the colder plywood. The first layer of glue will stop the plywood from absorbing the moisture.
@wabisabimaker17945 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, great build and just what I have been looking for. I have a Casper mattress and they stress to use slats spaced 4" apart as a mattress frame so that there is air circulation underneath it otherwise you could have mildew problems. I don't know which kind of mattress you have so this isn't feedback on your situation, I'm only thinking of how to adapt your design for my situation. Your content never fails, I love it! Also, those are my fav kicks so far!

Hey a quick tip when you used the rputer against a wooden strip you want the round part of the base of the router to touch the fence because (at least with my router) that part is perfectly round. And if you use the flat part it will rock around and you wont get a straight cut. With the round part you can move it around and the cut will still be straight btw. Absolutely beautiful! BUTTT…what I found out the hard way.. that when you make a bed, you can’t put something solid under the mattress bc the mattress has to breathe… I did this (plywood under my mattress) and after a year or so, there was dark dust (looked like a dirty dog or person broke in and rolled around on my guest bed) it was mostly concentrated at the mid-upper part… and nobody had been in that room… it was mold or mildew dust… a box spring allows air circulation, bc the bottom and the top of box spring is very thin fabric(like a screen almost). Now full disclosure, I do live eastern nc, so it is humid, and I do live in an OLD farmhouse, so that may or may not be the some of the or all the reason… I don’t know..
@stumptownwoodworks5 жыл бұрын
This is almost exactly the design I did for our king bed...well, not exactly. But the long side boxes for me were broken in half to make assembly and taking them into the room easier. Ours will be drawers all around and ideally solid Walnut that will have a continuous grain on each face, but not face to face... that'd be one massively long glue up. It will also require floating night stands to get to the drawer under your head and I'm excited to design those...want charging,maybe light, and speakers... we'll see. Great video 👍. Also, I thought for sure you'd go with Blum undermount after building your outfeed /assembly table. I can't go back now that I've used them unless they just can't work in a particular application
@Foureyes.Furniture5 жыл бұрын
At the point that I built this I had never used blum drawer slides. I actually just used them on a project that will come out later this month though. They are kind of hard to wrap my head around still...but they work great. You can definitely see the quality difference :)
@stumptownwoodworks5 жыл бұрын
@@Foureyes.Furniture yeah that's what I thought too. Trying to get everything square and perfect... seeing the tolerances they put in the catalog...it was overwhelming. Then setting in the drawers for the first time and seeing how much adjustability they have 🤯 it was awesome. Could easily be out of square or have a slightly wavy piece of ply and be fine. Also they can be side or bottom mounted to the box so they work for slide out drawers behind doors too.

Chris, another question. Have you considered edge banding the plywood edge? I know that if you paint it, it may be a non issue- but I would probably go with a stain. Also, did you consider any perforation of plywood that is directly under the matress for air flow? I see arguments on both sides. I assume that is why is is popular to use slats instead of solid supports for the mattress.
@Foureyes.Furniture5 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe...i don't like edge banding. Hardwood strips for some projects...but not this one. I was embracing the ply. For paint. I want bright pops if I do it...just on certain portions. Drawer fronts, etc... not the whole thing. Slats are a good idea. I wasn't worried about it though...Might be fun to redesign using slats just as a design challenge though.

@Foureyes.Furniture5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was kind of testing them out. I just got that new attachment for the festool, from woodpecker, that makes it act like a huge miter gauge. That thing is a champ when it comes to quickly lining up a 90 degree cut, knowing its perpendicular, without needing to measure. That said, for the track saw systems themselves. Factoring in the price. I actually think the Kreg is as good and it's WAY less expensive.

Hey ! I believe you should elevate your mattress in order to make some airflow underneath and allow it to breath. When we sleep, we sweat and the mattress get humid, so allowing some space underneath prevent mold for both the wooden bed and the mattress. It can increase comfort as well. Also, why are you using plywood ? I started using it to make some shelves, and I feel that that wood isn't very resistant, get scratches easily and does not look nice. I think pine may to an good alternative, but probably more expensive. Best ! Geoffroy

Hi Chris, love the video as usual but I wanted to give you some feedback on the videography (if that's even the right word). I've noticed the last few months something kinda changed about the style of the videos - still relaxing, still love the music, and the woodworking - but - there was something about the mix of the soothing sounds, the woodworking, and the old garage, random kid/wife running around and the day getting brighter and then fading into the night that always stylistically went very well together. Not sure how or if that helps, just thought I would point it out a bit if it helps you think.
@Foureyes.Furniture5 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I'm very aware of that. That was one of my fears going into the new space. That the videos wouldn't have the same charm. And I think certain elements are lost in that respect. Ultimately though, I feel like 97% of the feeling was carried over. And the new space is a lot nicer in a lot of other ways. Like not being 110 degrees in the summer for example :)

03:40 - Just a small quibble: _never_ write on a piece of wood to label it, with a pen of any kind! A soft pencil is good, and better still is a strip of painter's tape (you can write on _that_ with a Sharpie). I speak from experience when I say that there are few things more frustrating than getting near the end of a project and going to paint, stain or otherwise finish it, only to find that the pen marks keep showing through, no matter how many coats you lay down. Edit: from later shots, it looks like Chris _might_ be using a mechanical pencil rather than a pen, but it's hard to tell. Either way, it's likely to give some the impression that it *is* a pen, and they could follow suit.
