Great video! What size EMT conduit and wire did you use?

I'm preparing to wire up my pole barn. I appreciate this helpful video. Just a couple of questions: Why did you bend the conduit down behind every 6x6? Also, why did you hang the outlet boxes down off the horizontal boards and not mount them up higher?
@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
Hello. Thanks for watching our video. There is other ways you can accomplish running electric than exactly how I did it but because I used EMT pipe is why I did what you ask. The boxes lined up better if I offset them and it allowed me to be able to bend a saddle to go around the 6x6. I did not want to drill my posts.
@gm4everman Жыл бұрын
I see now. If you put the boxes up higher, you would have to get down below that board and still bend around the post. The video was a bit deceiving because it looked like the conduit bent down when it really just bends back behind the post. I plan on running EMT myself. Thanks again!@@CollinsCountry

Did you need conduet? Is that always going to be exposed?

No conduit wasn’t necessary but I knew I wasn’t going to cover it up for quite some time. And I do think it looks good too.

Just a thought -- don't know if your electric provider has a "demand multiplier" at the power meter tie in, But by throwing the switches on together or quick succession some companies have a way of "upping" your rates due to "high surge demand" or what ever "catchy" term they can come up with.
@CollinsCountry10 ай бұрын
lol. I wouldn’t doubt that for a second.

First, I'm not a licensed electrician. But why did you only use a 3-wire feed to your barn? Where I am we have to have both a 4-wire feed plus ground rod(s) at the outbuilding. The way you wired it don't you have neutral and ground bonded in two places now (main service panel and this new panel)?
@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. I believe this was acceptable when I was in school. There has to be 2 bonded areas of ground and neutral to tie it together but after quick research this does not seem acceptable for todays NEC. I’m going back to the drawing board. Quite possible I need to run a 4th conductor and separate neutral and ground at the shop. I need to get answers for this as it is now really bugging me. Lol. This setup with the “through lug meter panel” might have different rules in the NEC. Thanks again.
@bradleylb5003 Жыл бұрын
@@CollinsCountry Dave is correct. You were supposed to pull a ground wire from the main and drive two ground rods at the new building. You'll also have to have a panel that doesn't bond the ground to the neutral. You also either need to mount the panel outside or have an outside disconnecting means. To be 100% up to code everything is supposed to be AFCI/GFCI protected too. Good job on your conduit. I would have just run MC cable though. Not trying to nitpick ya, just a little help from someone that's done these and had them inspected in different municipalities. Good luck!
@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
@@bradleylb5003 yea thanks for the advice. I’m working on correcting. I have the two ground rods in already just need to run the ground from meter panel and separate bond. I do have a disconnect at the meter base for the barn though.
@terraintactic Жыл бұрын
This is only correct if this panel is fed from a sub panel after a service disconnect. This setup is perfectly acceptable if the URD was ran as service entrance conductors (such as double lugged off a 320A meter socket) and the panel here is the first means of disconnect (service disconnect) for this accessory structure.
