I found the best way to deal with the Opal is to cut it up - a grater works well - mix with some translucent liquid clay, mixing and mixing and you'll end up with opal that acts like 'normal' clays.

Chop up the unusable dried opal clay and sandwich it in translucent or add liquid clay. You could add some glitter or nail art powder. Shape it and bake it. You may fall in love. Thanks for the video, have been trying to figure out how to make bowls.

You can rescue the dry opal clay. Chop it up tiny. Throw it in a plastic ziplock bag. Add a few, and I mean a few! drops of oil. I use baby oil. Close the bag and then mush the oil around. Best as you can squeeze all the pieces of clay back together, still keeping the bag closed. Then set it aside for a few days. When you come back to it, it should be easier to condition. If you put too much oil, it will be messy. To dry it out a bit, take out of bag and leave on paper towels a couple days. The oil will leach back out. This technique works every time for me. PS regarding the oil. In your mind you might guesstimate how much oil is needed. Trust me, half that amount. Just a drop will be enough to soften a 2oz block. Also, you can purchase liquid clay softener. Or you can use liquid clay. I have heard other YTers say that’s what they do but I have never see a demo or done it myself.

Wow, thanks so much! I've never heard of doing that and I'll definitely try. I really appreciate your help!

Update: This (and many other methods) did not work for the opal. I think it's just unusable. I did purchase a few more batches and 2 were usable. Others were bad. I will have to find where I purchased the bad packages and not buy from there again.

Hi there! Sculpey says as long as you use a food-safe glaze, these bowls can be used for food because non-toxic plasticizers are now used. However, they are not tested or certified as food-safe, so a non-toxic food-safe glaze should be used. I haven't looked into those, but I would love to hear if you find them. That would be fun to use!
