Excellent! Park Tool wants about$60 bucks for each for the removal and install tools. I'd probably never use them again. Thank you!

Nice job. Way to think outside the box. One concern is that knocking it out uneven with a punch could be bad for the carbon fiber folks. I need your dad to help me invent a split tool like the Park removal tool for even tapping. Also, aren't you supposed to use a primer and a retaining compound on press fit bearings?

Great questions! I agree a split tool would be better, doesn't seem too hard to make! You're right that there's a possibility of damaging the frame if you're really careless, but we haven't had any issues doing it this way after ~20 or so BB replacements. I read about primers/compounds for press fit and they didn't seem to be required, but curious to learn what others here typically use. Thanks!

@dj-klein I contacted Kogel Bearings concerning using a compound for installation. They recommended grease only and said no to the adhesive. I did find a guy making the split tool like the park one, but I ended up buying a $10 tool from Ebay.

@@michaelmappin4425 Thanks for the update. Another clue is that I haven't seen any grease or other compound when pressing out the bottom bracket for the first time, at least not on these Norco bikes. Other manufactures could be different. I'll think about building a split tool, it would be nice to have!

Love this! What size nut, bolt and washer did you use please? Thanks
@dj-klein Жыл бұрын
We are using a 3/4” bolt with a length of 7” from the local Home Depot. The bolt has code COG written on the head. The nut is a standard 3/4” nut and the two washers are 3/4” with a 2” diameter (code ASC). You should be able to get all of these parts for about $6 total.

When you began assembling the bb tool from the drive side did I hear you say "tape" when you slid what appears to be a centering piece over the bolt? Did you just wrap tape around the bolt until it matched the diameter of the bb opening so as to keep it all centered? One on each end of the bolt?

Yes, that’s exactly right. We wrapped masking tape until the outer diameter of the tape roughly matched the inner diameter of the BB. One on each end, as you say. This all just to ensure that the BB goes in straight, and so far it has every time!

Oh and one more thing. We wanted the tape to be able to slide on the side with the nut. So! I did the first tape loop with the sticky side away from the threads, and then added more loops on top with the sticky side in, if that makes sense. Maybe you can get the tape in just the right spot, but sliding is nice so the tape can support the BB shell as it is pressed into place.
