Another awesome how to! I'm so glad the bike industry has quietly acknowledged their error and are going back to BSA BBs..... and they'll do the same thing by 2027 regarding headset cable routing.

Thanks myman! Totally agree. As I mentioned to another subscriber, press fits are heavily dependent on tight tolerances to perform properly. The bike industry isn't exactly known for this. Personally, I'm glad more companies are adopting BSA again. Even if it cost me a few extra bucks for the frame. I'd rather have the options. 👍 Don't get me started on internal chain stay and headset cabling. that's a bit of a sore spot for me at the moment 😤

Only minor issue I have is the use of the term bearing instead of BB Cup. The cup holds the bearing. The reason I make the distinction is that on my pressfit BB, I service or replace the bearings separately without removing the cup.

I'm glad you brought this up. I'm replacing my BB30 "bearings" and didn't know if I should replace the cups at the same time. (if i can remove the bearing w/o the cup coming out. i bought a removal/press kit on Amz. hope it works) This video did help in a lot of ways but the info I really wanted to know was what you just wrote. Thanks. To both of you.

@@dubbya57 I live by the saying “less is more”. If my BB cup squeak or move only then I replace it. Annually, I remove the bearings seals only (not the bearings), flush the bearings and re-grease. If annually (or at any time) the bearings spin rough and degreasing doesn’t clear it up then I replace the bearings. The key here is to maintain the bearings as they sit in the cup and only replace when they are stuck or your BB squeaks.

Agreed! When it comes to terminology, sometimes I tend to generalize too much, especially in my earlier videos. I've been trying to improve on this. Until these videos, I rarely had to talk and do the jobs. People stuff off, and I would do the job, most of the time in my own little world. Reminders like this are needed as they help me remember to focus on these details, so I really appreciated the constructive feedback 👍

So far I'm leaning towards *_threadfit_* when my pressfit bearings are due for a change. Pressfit is the only big downside of my bike that I really did not want, so I'm just hesitant to swop to the same standard I have little faith in.

I closest ride buddy has two trek farley's. One didn't have creek issue, the other one wouldn't stop creaking from the day it was purchased. That bike was warrantied so many times for the issue that trek replaced the frame (he ended with a 9.8 instead of the 9.6, which is what he had). the new frame STILL creaked. we replace the pressfit with the wheel manufacturing thread together press fit option 4 years ago. It worked like a CHARM! the solution won't work for a 30mm spindle (at least that I know of) but if you have a 24mm it works great! at least for his bike it did
@a8f235
@a8f235 Жыл бұрын
@@zoubtube There are different brands that now make threadfit options, and with different spindle size options as well. A quick google search showed Chris King makes a 30mm spindle option. I don't have any personal experience with either brands so I'll just do some research before any purchase of course. Personally I have no issues with my bottom bracket now, and it is the stock one the bike came with when it was new last year. Even though I have no issues with this one, I still have no desire to replace it with the same standard. I rather just swop the standard and hopefully sleep a little better at night.

Zoub, what’s your opinion on headsets? I had a specialized integrated headset and it wore down the carbon, leading to warranty. Always creaked and loosened - nightmare! I think pressfit for headset and threaded BB ftw 👍
@zoubtube
@zoubtube Жыл бұрын
"I think pressfit for headset and threaded BB YUP! That's the way I see it. Let me choose what headset I want, and I should be able to replace it at my discretion. My Farley has integrated cups, and I am NOT a fan. I worry about it and keep an eye on it, as there are signs of wear. I never feel like that with my cane creaks. If by chance the cup does corrode, just pop it out and put a new one in, and you're done. 👍 I don't care how good, how light, or how Whatever, a frame is. I would never buy one without a threaded BB. I get the idea of press fit BB's, but their one major flaw is that they are heavily dependent on tight tolerances to function properly. Unfortunately, this is the one thing the bike industry isn't exactly known for, which is the reason for the inconsistencies. And unlike threaded, the issues can't be solved easily, at lease that I know of.

The race face instruction sheet says to apply grease where the bearings sit. Is that used when primer and Lock tite is used?
@zoubtube
@zoubtube 9 ай бұрын
My apologies for the late response. It all depends on the BB material. If it's a metal BB, then all you need is grease, no primer, and no retaining compound is needed. Primer and retaining compound should only be used on carbon BB's. No grease is needed for carbon BB's when a primer with a retaining compound is used. Technically, you can use only grease on a carbon BB, but you can run the risk of a BB cup making a creaking noise. Hopefully, this helps.

My apologies for the late response. Glad you found the video informative. To answer your question, it depends on the crank spindle size ex:, 24mm shimano,, 29mm dub, 30mm etc. here is a link to the hambini BB92 page. I know this guy uses NTN bearings in his BB's (I buy all my bearings from him) His bb92 is expensive, but you should be able to get info based of your crank requirements on his website. 👍

@@zoubtube thank you for following up on this, as I have SRAM GXP, 22mm on left side, 24mm on right side. For NTN I had only quite expensive offers (for a size I'm not sure about) so gave it up and went with the basic SRAM GXP BB It was much cheaper and easier for BB30 to replace it with NTN...

Are you sure that those deep grooves appeared due to bearings misalignment? At some point, bad bearing movement smoothness can cause issues like this, especially if it's metal bearing contacts with metal spindle.

If you get a chance, take a look at the Race Face Next SL crank video I released a few weeks ago. It was on this bike. Not only did I have to remove the crank with a hammer, but I also had to hammer it back into these same bearings (the replacement BB kit hadn't arrived when I made the crank service video). I've worked on MANY Next SL cranks over the years. I've never had to use a hammer like I did on this bike. The spindle was literally jammed on the bearings. 😲
@jonhkarter
@jonhkarter Жыл бұрын
@@zoubtube Got it. Indeed, sounds like a misalignment issue. I saw on my Next SL spindle a very minor groove on one side due to bearing movement imperfection. I like Shimano's approach to this problem - they simply added a plastic layer between bearing and spindle to avoid spindle damage.
@zoubtube
@zoubtube Жыл бұрын
@@jonhkarter it was nuts. At one point I was worried I was going to damage something. What I'm also not sure on is why there were two different bearings in the BB. I'm not sure if raceface used to sell them like this. my buddy said it's the original bb from when he bought the frame new. just seems odd to me.

So I have a 2024 Scott Spark Frame (carbon) and it takes PF92. I'm installing SRAM Eagle XX drivetrain which uses a DUB. The BB shell on the frame is exposed carbon. I would need to use the primer and retaining compound as well for the DUB right? Also, I have the Park Tool HHP-2 Bearing Cup Press...can I use this tool to press in the cups?
@zoubtube
@zoubtube 24 күн бұрын
I would verify with Scott on using retaining compound for that year frame to be sure. But when using a retaining compound, use a primer before it. Read the instructions to verify the dry time before applying the retaining compound. Only apply a very small amount of retaining compound. A very thin film is all that is needed. Most people apply WAY too much. Yes, you can use the Park Tool HHP-2 to install BB's. It's a large, heavy tool, so it will feel clumsy for this purpose. Just make sure the cups are evenly aligned with the sell before pressing them in. Do one at a time.

@ ok I'll reach out to Scott first and yeah I bought the primer and retaining compound and know to use a very thin/small amount as it's only purpose to to fill in a few imperfections to stop any creaking. Thank you so much and I've subbed your channel!!

@jugaloo5873 you are correct, it is a spindle and not crankshaft. However you are wrong about it being a headset cup remover. The tool he is using in the video is PARK TOOL BBT-90.3 Designed to remove and install the bearings and bearing units used in BB90, BB92, Shimano Press Fit, SRAM Press Fit GXP, Race Face Press Fit and other press fit bottom bracket systems. The BBT-90.3 includes a bearing removal tool and two bushings, which are used in conjunction with a Park Tool Bearing Press to press the bearings into the bottom bracket shell.

They come in different sizes dependant on the diameter it need to catch on to. They got one for headset and bottom bracket cups, and one for oversized headset cups. Then they got the one he's using, which is specifically designed for pressfit bottom bracket bearings. PS: It even says *_Bottom Bracket Bearing Remover_* on the tool itself lol 🙃

You're funny. If all you noticed was the misnaming of the spindle, then I'm doing great! 🙂 I had to correct myself at least a half dozen times by calling the cups, shells, and vs! 😁 "A : Thats a spindle not a crankshaft" Yes, you are correct. I was pointing to the spindle. But holding the whole crank in my hand, Crankset is what I was habitually thinking, and yet "crankshaft", of all things, is what came out, Go figure! As can be seen in ALL my videos, I'm still getting used to the recording process and still have a loooong way to go. Looking at my hands while looking at the camera while talking, never mind actually working on something, while thinking of lighting, shadows, viewing angles, camera overheating, and on and on! It's a process. But, as always, I appreciate people pointing out missteps in order to help me improve the overall delivery. I really do need to start scripting this stuff, though. What I really need is more time in a day! 😉 "B : Thats not a bearing removal tool, it's a headset cup remover ffs" Sort of. The tool can be used to remove cups and bearings, as woodnwheels mentions. Also, to consider. The Race face BB in this video has the bearing integrated into the cup. Only the cup with teh bearing can be removed, not just the bearing. "Walk away from the bike." I WISH! I'm sure I'd be way more productive! Unfortunately, I've been a lifetime bike addict and rebuilding them since I was 13. From dirt bikes, to Moto GP (NEVER want to adjust shim under bucket, EVER, again!), to mountain bikes. You wouldn't happen to know of a good therapist, would you? 😁
@zoubtube
@zoubtube Жыл бұрын
@@a8f235 As I mentioned in my response to the original poster, the BB92 in the video is a bearing set integrated into cups. The bearings are basically the cup, they can't be separated. What woodenwheels posted was a cut-and-paste off the product page. It states both cups and bearings for the press fit formats the tool can be used for. It's semantics considering that both cups and bearings are one thing in this case. Jugaloo was just trying to make me look like a bonehead. If he watched any of my videos, he would know that I point this out about myself all the time! 😁
