Its not rocket science to replace the radiator and the valve on steam boiler system. It helps to have a helper though. Borrow some big pipe wrenches and take your time.

+The Abled Gardener we changed the hallway so it is smaller, and the house is better insulated, so it didn't need a huge radiator. this hallway used to get very hot in winter, a waste of heat. thx! eric.

Where can I buy a 1.25" spud pipe and union nut for a steam radiator? Is the thing you screw into the radiator with the spud wrench properly called a spud pipe? Or does it have a different name?

Great video. In my case I have a one pipe steamradiator that isn't warming up. I took the air vent off and cleaned it up to no avail. I'm suspecting the pipe feeding it may be clogged. Is that possible in a steam system?
@gardenfork
@gardenfork 4 жыл бұрын
Could be Tireak, the pipes rust inside. Water, heat, iron = rust. Mbe ask on the This Old House forum?
@tctulloch

@@gardenfork I actually set the thermostat up to 80 so the system would run for a while. After a while that small radiator finally kicked on. I'm wondering if maybe thermostat set too low?
@gardenfork
@gardenfork 4 жыл бұрын
Tireak C. Tulloch it’s probably a bad steam release valve (air vent) in that radiator. It’s the small silver thing on the side opposite the side with the steam pipe connector. These little valves often fail. You can buy variable steam regulators (air vents), I use a brand called Vari Valve. Not cheap but good.
@tctulloch
@tctulloch 4 жыл бұрын
@@gardenfork the vents are fine and I have those same quick vents on all the radiators. I adjusted them, but ti think the warmer than usual winter had been a factor as well.

It's been two years, but in case you are still wondering, some radiators just have their port different heights from the floor compared to other radiators.

there are a few near me in Brooklyn, you can also find radiators in house salvage yards and mbe Habitat for Humanity shops. even craigslist.
@jimbojimmy1173
@jimbojimmy1173 3 жыл бұрын
Something to consider....if you're overheating a space you could just install a smaller size vent on the radiator. Also, there's a reason someone is getting ride of the old radiator. It probably leaks, and i would recommend pressure testing before you waste the time to install.
@gardenfork
@gardenfork 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jimmy, i've never had an issue with a leaking radiator. most of them we find here are removed when the contractor is doing a gut renovation and they remove all the steam radiators. thx!

What are the proper steps ? Shut off the boiler by the switch next to it, shut off the return valve and start draining it and bleeding the unit for water to flow faster then go on to change the steam valve …?
