I saw a guy at the Old Mystic Seaport many years ago take a piece of square metal stock and heat it on a forge, got it glowing red and beat it into a harpoon with a round shaft. Years ago I used a big dog treat to back a red elm bow I made. I put it in the tub for a week or so to soften it up and made glue from unflavored gelatin. I mix the gelatin really thick, brushed it onto the bow, laid the rawhide on it to set up for a while. Then I clamped the bow to a bed rail and put it in the shed for a few weeks, this was in August. Man that rawhide was TOUGH. I had to use a bench grinder to trim it to fit. Tough stuff for sure.

That Spanish style lockback folder would've been very common in the old West, i can't think of the Spanish name but the French LeGoulle and Texas Toothpick are modeled off it but the Spanish one is huge! They kept it concealed in a sash around the waist. 😎👍🇺🇸🇺🇦 Aha! The Navaja! Huge, mean and deadly! Next time, thin and lighten your dye with alcohol and brush it on like staining a gun stock rather than soaking the sheath. Also, your can rainproof the sheath using gunstock wax on the outside of the sheath. I'll suggest also using the gusset and riveting the top, point and belt loop (If you use one) to the sheath after stitching. (This will help keep your stitching tight) HTH.
