Good clean work, I like that you used an already "distressed" piece of leather for the character in it, and I liked your dye job in the walnut stain. Makes me want to dig out the old leather workin' kit and see what kinda scrap I've got squirrel away! Thanks!

Thanks Santee & Co. That's purty knife and sheath . I've been making sheaths for several years now , but not professionally . I buy scrap leather at Hobby Lobby by the five pound bag . The scraps come in various sizes shapes and colors so I pick out a piece that closely matches the blade and go from there . Its a fun and inexpensive hobby , so if you mess up the first couple of times you've not lost much money . I don't reccomend buying the pre fab kits because they rarely fit the knife well . My favorite homemade sheath is one I made for my Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie . It has the old timey look that most factory sheaths lack . I also made a replacement handle for her made of teak wood in the coffin shape after the original wore out , and I cut down the guard a bit on the spine side . Looking forwards to seeing y'all down the trail .

This brought back some memories. When I was 12 i got a really nice buck knife for christmas cause thats what all 12 year old boy scouts need. It came with this terrible canvas sheath if you want to call it that. When I was at summer camp I made a wonderful leather sheath for it. The knife wasn't anything special but I wish I had the sheath. It is lost in time. I think it got trashed in a flood at my parents house when I was in college. Bunch of my stuff was boxed in the basement and was destroyed. :-(

Nice and simple, a good starter project for people wanting to get into something more complex than a leather belt. My first issue of the Backwoodsman magazine had a revolver holster on the front which caught my attention and inside was a tutorial on how to make one..been collecting that magazine ever since..haven't subscribed simply cause it's easy to get since my local grocery stores carry the magazine and so does my local Books-A-Million..makes it easy to get every 2 months and I've learned so much from that about both the frontier and just survival in general..my family that grows their own veggies like to take a look through it for recipes when it's something they grow or something native and easy to get for us in our state if it's from the forest.

Hey santee, me again. As I've already mentioned, colonial Australia was very similar to the old west. The multiculturalism, the agriculture, the frontier wars, the frontiersmen and the OUTLAWS. Many criminals in Australia's went to the Australian bush to pray on lone travelers, stagecoaches and country town banks which Australians called "bailing up". These outlaws were nicknamed bushrangers. Some famous bushrangers were Dan Morgan, Ben Hall, the Clarke Brothers and the most famous bushranging gang, the Kelly Gang led by Ned Kelly. Him and his gang wore metal armour and went down at the seige of the town of Glenrowan. Ned Kelly and his armour has become and Australian icon

For a carbon steel like would you suggest putting a hole in the bottom so water wont get trapped in and rust the blade? Hey Santee, about a two years back I bought myself a whittling knife with a sheath for a little under 20 bucks. I believe the knife and sheath did not originally go together but both the knife and sheath are definitely antique, but I am having a little trouble dating the age of the sheath. The leather on it is clearly very old and it has a snap fastener on it which would place it at least after 1885 and it has a unique design on it of a dog holding a sword in its mouth which I haven't seen elsewhere before and the design looks Victorian eraish so what do you think the age of the sheath would be? I could send a picture via email if you'd like I just think its a really nice piece with a cool design. Thanks.

This is actually pretty useful. I have a double sided dagger, at least I think it's a dagger, and the sheath I got with it split open because it didn't fit. What would you suggest for such a blade, Santae?
@Devin_Stromgren
@Devin_Stromgren 5 жыл бұрын
If it's a double edged knife designed primarily for stabbing, as opposed to slashing or hacking, it would indeed be classified as a dagger. As for a sheath, it would be difficult to come up with recommendations for sheath styles without at least a photograph.

I would suggest a sheath made with a wedge all the way around it, so it won't cut through the stitching.

Absolutely love the videos! say can you do one on tobacco use in the old west? from what i understand cigarettes where not a particularly common thing until the 1890s, So how was it typically used? I know supposedly back then it was more of an occasional thing and the concept of regular daily smoking really took off in the 1910s

Hi Santee, that sheath turned out great. I work with leather (my small home business is a leather business), so I was excited to see that y'all understand the time and effort that goes into making items out of leather. One other way I believe they kept the sheath together was also putting leather working rivets in a few areas to keep it together, and you're right sometimes a simple sheath is all the knife needs to look great. As always great video.

Well, that's a great home business, pard! I have a sheath with rivets from the era, and it's pretty cool. Might do that in the future. I'm thinking of making a holster in an episode, as well.
