In the third video of my DIY RC Tires video I show you how to use my 3D printed molds to make a rear slick for a Losi Mini-B.

Thanks for doing these videos. Until you posted this I'd never thought to try making our own tires. We have an older RC buggy, a Kyosho Icarus. It's really hard to find good tires that are the right size, modern ones are different. I've already fixed bits of it through 3d printing. This might be a good way to make it run a lot better!

Awesome video will try it myself thanks! Is there any reason you use a custom plunger instead of just buying a big syringe?

Thanks for the video. It's a good idea. Would you recommend this method for a 1/8 scale big truggy/monster truck tires? I would like to hear your opinion on this specific use case before I embark on this journey:) Thanks in advance!

I would say only do the project if there's something you want that isn't already available to buy. If what you want already exists, it will be much easier and cheaper to just buy it. The biggest tires I've made so far are 1/10 buggy rears. So far the process and the rubber has scaled up to that size without any issues, but I can't make any guarantees that you'll have success with larger tires. You may encounter new and unique problems that I haven't had to solve. Are you willing and able to grind through frustrating technical issues without outside support/assistance? I personally view this more as an engineering project/challenge first and an RC related project second so I didn't mind having to solve all the problems I faced. If you're okay with that kind of project then go ahead and give it a shot.

I would LOVE to see you do a blender or 360 video on modeling the tire and then the mold and especially how you made the inside!

Thanks for making these. Going to try this week with PLA. Any other printing material you'd recommend?

I've always used PLA and never had any issues with it so I've never felt like trying anything else. Something with a higher glass transition temperature might be a good idea for curing the tires on a heat chamber, but again PLA is good up to about 105°F and that's been good enough for me.

I'm assuming the air vent and injection holes are on the same side so that the resin doesn't drain out while curing? How well does moving the injection inlet to the bottom or lower side of the mold work if an end cap is added (so that a person doesn't need to develop the feel for when to rotate the mold)?

Yes, in this mold the vent and injection port are on the same side of the mold and there's no vents on the bottom of the mold. That's the reason for flipping the mold upside down to start. I've never tried injecting into the bottom and trying to put in a plug. That could work, but I could also see it being tricky to implement. If you watch my video on mold design one of the first things I talk about is how to get the resin into the bottom of the mold by adding internal "plumbing." On my more complicated molds that's exactly what I've done.

Please review the SDS sheet, your health can suffer a great deal by exposure to resin. You can develop a serious reaction over time of repeated exposure and can become really sensitive if you let it get on your hands. Wear gloves, and whatever else the safety data sheet says you need protect your health. Nice work making tires. This is actually pretty 😎

May be you wear gloves, PU isnt exactly skin friendly, when its not cured.
