3 piece wheels are the best. Basically a lifetime purchase because you can change the lip and the barrel and you're set. Even if you somehow manage to damage the face, you can still recover it at least once, and they look good too.A friend also called them eco rims, what with all the reusability factors involved.

Another great episode. It's basically common sense with a bit of necessary tech info when putting back together. For $150 Repco sell a portable tyre changer which is all manually done. So that makes this job a possibility to be done at home. Having watched this I would not hesitate in doing this at home. Always look forward to seeing these videos.

Those tyre machines are pretty hard on alloy wheels tbh, They have their place for sure but they’re more suited to steel wheels.

Thanks for the info, I have a 3 piece wheel on the front of my sidecar outfit that has one bent rim half causing a lot of difficulty when balancing. It doesn't have a barrel and lip like your sample, both rim halves are the same dimension, but one side has been hit hard at some stage in its life. It's a polished rim which could do with some TLC appearance wise anyway which is virtually impossible while its assembled with both brake discs fitted also. The rear one needs resealing at least also. These are custom rims to allow me to fit 15" car tyres instead of the original 18" front and 17" rear bike tyres. With the price of motorcycle tyres and their quite short life, the 15" wheels cut tyre costs considerably.

Nice work and very informative. I've always been afraid that dismantling these wheels would cause them to warp or simply be difficult to balance. I would have liked to see tips on polishing it up while it was disassembled. Such a pain to polish around those wheel bolts!

@aserta

Yeah, but both of those values are relatively easily adjusted with the appropriate lip and barrel being adjusted. I think Marty and Moog did something like this for one of theirs. For me it's the face that's a PITA to find. I love 3 piece because the wheel is essentially a life time purchase, but finding the right face is sometimes a nightmare centering, hole patter and number... those are more rigid numbers.
