DIY Removal and bypass of Thermostatic Valve/ Anti Scald Valve attached to hot water tank

Mike, I to am in Ontario and the valve was screaming every time someone jumped in the shower. I just completed this DIY. It took longer to go buy the parts than it did to complete the job. Thanks!!

Good stuff. I’m in Australia and wanting to do this. My plumber friend suggested it to me, but manufacturer told me it is also the thermostat and so the water will just get hotter and hotter without it. Yours is the only video / info I’ve seen doing this. You seem to have access to an external thermostat regulator to adjust your temperature.

Hey Kevin, yes the hot water tank has a temp regulator on it. This thing has nothing to do with it. Just an add on that u will need to continously fix. Cut it out my friend.

@@mikehalliday1070 Done. I cut it a few days ago, and I have luxurious beautiful hot water to all outlets. It’s continuous 70C (160F) so I still have to find the thermostat to take it down a little. But thanks for giving me the confidence to go ahead. The units in australia are sealed, forcing one to call a plumber, electrician for any service issue - pfft. So I’ll have to pop a few rivets to find the thermostat.

I’m an Australian too, and never did any plumbing fixes but I’m going to try this. Thanks also for the shark bite idea. Awesome. @@henerymag hey Henry ya so rediculous. Just more govt regulations costing us more money. Its been a few months now and everything is working great. Have my hot water tank all the way down to one above vacation mode and lasts for a 20 min shower. Which I rarely take. Good luck bro

Hey my Canadian brother. I hope you're doing well after all the psychopathy the last few years. Question: We're you experiencing poor hot water flow with the TMV valve, and did the flow improve after you removed the TMV? I have the same issue in a new home. Cold water flows well, hit water doesn't, and if there's simply one other faucet or washing machine on, taking a shower or even running a tap for hot water is pretty useless.

I've been watching videos for quite some time on this topic, but the first time I saw someone explain the same issue I'm having and either bypass the cold water supply to TMV or just get rid of it DIY style. What kind of hoses did you use, Are they Push-to-Connect x 18 in. Braided Stainless Steel by Sharkbite, probably 3/4 in. I have 1/2 in

Couldn't you have just capped off the T junction for the cold with a SharkBite endcap? You would have saved a little more $.

A couple days ago, my daughter in law called her mom, with this issue (she did not know what the problem was). They called a plumber who would only replace it. I did not even know this was a thing. Unfortunately, they have already committed to the plumber. I told them, next time, have me look at it first, and I will cut the ridiculous offending member out. She said it only lasts two years with their crappy water supply. Pretty good video, however, shoot LANDSCAPE, not portrait.

@@mikehalliday1070 don't think the plastic fittings will hold up to the heat they will dry expand and crack sooner or later .if so could have a mess . should solder in copper .

@@sandbagger9099 the temp is actually pretty consistent but you may have a point. Next time I do any copper work I may switch it out. In the mean time its working great. Plastic has come a long way

You spent a lot of time and money to downgrade your house. And you used shark bite!?!? Why not just rebuild/replace the valve? It would have been cheaper and your house would still be up to code

Thanks for your comment. Wasn't much time or money at all. I feel no need for the valve and everything is still working just fine. I am very happy with what I have done. Have fun rebuilding your valve.
