Hi Vince, the problem with the Green stain i think is because you are adding water to mineral oil. Water and oil when mixed will emulsify, and you will constantly get foaming. you need to use a product that will breakdown the oil. Acetone or IPA might be a solution

Ya, I was thinking maybe he should try break cleaner on the green stain. That with a pressure washer might get it out.

Hi Vince, When RR do their wood work they build it up to approximately 1mm of varnish and the buff it back to 0.2 mm so if you build up and then wet and dry it though the grades of paper to 2 or 3000 you should be able to achieve a similar level of finish that RR do 😊
@gimble44710 ай бұрын
I agree, but to my reckoning in addition to what you are saying it is easier when doing it himself to use a spray lacquer so then the prep and application closely matches that of clear coating/ lacquering a car, in fact you could even use automotive clear lacquer, to the point that after the fine sanding that you rightly suggest he could even then move to polishing compound if left to harden properly first of course, although to be fair in this case I don’t see the point, Vinces finish looks more than adequate to me, but that’s just my opinion 😊

Vince, on the door caps, you can use a gel stain over the varnish to darken them. Gel stain is used on sealed wood, either shellac or varnish. You can get the glass finish of the dash if you sand it and apply the finish with a cloth. Be very careful as it might be veneer. There's a product called Wink for getting out rust. It's phosphoric acid. It works but be careful.

For the carpet bit you stitched, find a part of the same carpet that matches but is hidden, trim off some of the pile. Use PVA glue to lightly coat the area you stitched (as little glue as pos) then blow the pile onto the glue. The trick is have the pile you trimmed in small pieces and use a very light smear of glue. It will take the eye off it and look loads better.

When I was a kid, I found that a bottle of matey bubble bath would travel very nicely down the bannister of our stairs. Had hours of fun shooting it down the bannister, and catching it at the bottom. Until we slipped up, the bottle cracked leaking the contents onto the carpet. The suds just kept coming, and we ended up having an especially clean patch of the carpet for years. Gave a nice fresh smell to the hall way too. Kind of the opposite to the rolls carpet.

Spotting the needle and thread, I picked up a set of "easy-thread" needles few weeks back on Aliexpress, was like a pound for a large selection in a tidy wooden capsule like holder. All you have to do is catch a loop of the thread you are using up against the eye's little tang and that's it... threaded. What an insanely useful little thing, no more messing about going cross eyed trying to thread the buggers or using those stupid metal things that lose the little wire.

You can achieve that flawless gloss finish on the door caps - you just need to keep on with varnish/dry/sand, varnish/dry/sand! I used to work for a narrow boat building company and the works manager wanted a “wow” feature on every new boat to be a mirror gloss fitted counter top. Each one he did himself using a two-pack varnish - took about 20 coats and about two weeks (not full time obvs). The result was always stunning - just a pity that the first time it was used it would start getting scratched…

When u mentioned about the front roller turning on that carpet washer its always spins on bissells because the belt that drives it is connected to the water pump which is also belt driven from the main motor other carpet washers use a belt lifter tension pulley which lifts the belt up of the motor so the brushes dont spin in tool mode. And some use a mirco switch which also cuts the roller of in tool mode and some use a separate brushroll motor so u can have the roller on or off. For example a Vax carpet Washer A bit like a upright vacuum cleaner.

Hi Vince, when I clean my car carpets and rugs from home, I just use normal washing liquid (like Fairy, Yes or Dawn, just the kind that works on fat/grease) Washing liquid is also perfect on oil stained clothes, never had trouble with stains since I learned this trick. Then a semi stiff brush on my drill and after that I use my pressure washer to rinse it off, if it's a durable rug/carpet you can use the turbo accessory on those stubborn stains.

try not to 'paint' varnish - the brushing you learn when painting isn't good for varnishing. Unlike paint, varnish and lacquer starts to cure almost instantly, within just a few seconds, so if you do short brush strokes repeatedly over the same area you're going over varnish that was already starting to cure and putting brush marks into the varnish, the result over many layers looks patchy and even cloudy. For varnish you want to put a generous amount on the brush and try and apply in single long brush strokes - don't worry too much about it looking thicker in some places than others, it will self-level as it cures and the slight differences will even out over multiple layers

Hi - Hydraulic Fluid (particularly the RR363 stuff) is Hygrophobic - so it absorbs water. When you're agitating the carpet, you're creating an emulsion (like whipping eggs and vinegar to make mayonnaise, but you're adding air bubbles too). The water you're adding is being absorbed by the hudraulic oil and just spreading the oil thinner and thinner. You're right - there's something pretty interesting happening here! It would be interesting to put a bit of hydraulic fluid into a glass and pour in some water (maybe add red food colouring?) and timelapse it. Water absorbtion is a problem in brake systems, and the special Rolls Royce RR363 fluid (probably what the spill was) contains added castor oil to make it more viscous and stick to the moving parts hydraulic system even when cold. I think that continuing to use water/soap is going to reult in you being in an endless loop! Have you tried using some I.P.A - that would be a wonderful conclusion to this saga if it worked, I guess that alcohol might do a better job, or alcohol, then some kind of absorbent powder like baking soda. You might want to get an old bit of carpet, intentionally spill green fluid on it, and do a test run....

I should say, I'm not a scientist, but the reason I thought about this, is a crazy story - a friend of mine is a bike mechanic, working on expensive road bikes and eBikes up here in the Newcastle area. He had been working on a bike and unbeknownst to him, a bottle of hydraulic fluid had been knocked over on a shelf above him, and dripping into his water bottle on the countertop which had the lid left off it. It was a hot day and so he downed the water, which by now contained the colourless flavourless hydraulic fluid mixed into it, and because of the hygroscopic nature of the liquid, he was rushed to hospital in an abulance to have his stomach pumped - the liquid was preventing his body from ingesting what it needed and he was very, very poorly indeed and stayed in hospital for a week or so. He made a full recovery but I've always remembered that about brake/hydraulic fluid since then, don't drink it!
