The headlight "could" fail M.O.T because with part of the reflector missing it will reduce the light output of the headlight, it could also effect the beam pattern projected from the headlight which if this is deformed will also result in a failure. I think it will pass with the foil as it is now reflecting light where as the pen you used before did not reflect light very well. It is all down the the M.O.T inspector as it is their judgment call if the light output is degraded compared to the other headlight enough to warrant a pass, advisory or fail. This same scenario happens with plastic headlights that get attacked by UV which turns the lens cloudy and yellow. This again results in reduced light output and a deformed beam pattern. The side lights and indicators are not tested in the same way as the headlights, they just get visually checked. If the indicators are orange and the light output is reasonable form the side light and indicators they will pass. On more modern cars the lenses on the indicators are clear to give a cleaner look so the bulbs are painted orange and with the heat from the bulb the paint flakes off over time resulting in white light escaping giving you white indicators which is a failure but on Rolls the lenses are coloured so you wont have this problem. Obviously now most cars manufactured in the past five years will be using LED now. The knobs under the bonnet are to adjust the height of the headlight beam pattern so you are not blinding other road users. This adjustment needs to be done with a machine which they use to check if the headlight beam patterns are correct during the M.O.T test. It is not uncommon for the adjustment mechanism inside the headlight to fail as the a rarely touched or maintained as it is behind the headlight reflector. If the headlights need adjusting and the adjustment mechanism has failed this is an M.O.T failure. If you want to see if the headlight adjusters are working park the car about two meters away, parallel to a wall with the headlights pointing at the wall with the car on level ground. Switch on the dip beams and you will see the beam patterns projected on the wall. The beam patterns for the left and right headlight need to be level with one another and slightly towed down toward to ground. Turning one of the knobs under the bonnet you will see the pattern for that headlight go up or down depending on which way you rotate the knob. If you turn the knob and the pattern does not move the adjustment mechanism has failed and you need to take the headlight apart to fix it. If both adjusters work then you are set, if the beams are not level with one another try bringing the beam pattern which is highest level with the lower beam pattern. Always go lower instead of higher as if you set the beam to high it will blind other road users. You need the machine I mentioned earlier to adjust them properly but this will give you a ball park idea if the headlights are anywhere near to being aligned. If the headlights require height adjustment many M.O.T inspectors will just adjust them during the test as it takes more time and paperwork to fail the vehicle, adjust the headlights and then pass the vehicle but if they are looking to make some money out of you then they may fail it and then charge you for the adjustment. The headlight bezels look great, I know you mentioned that you was going to have the car sprayed and to get a proper job most sprayers would remove the headlights & sidelights so they can spray all the way into the headlight aperture to save masking up the headlights and to get full coverage. All the bolts and nuts attaching the seatbelt to the body/chassis need to be torqued with the torque wrench as again it is a safety component. Torque specifications will be in the workshop manual, I would also use semi-permanent thread locker on all the nuts and bolts as a belt and braces approach. To Waxoil the sills you need the long pipe attachment that has a 360 nozzle on the end that sprays Waxoil in every direction. You can then feed the pipe down the sill and slowly pull it out while injecting the Waxoil. The mechanism you looked at on the seatbelt is the inertia mechanism, when the belt is yanked the mechanism locks the belt from unravelling keeping the occupant in their seat. This is before explosive pre-tensioners were used as part of the airbag system to lock the seatbelts when a crash occurs. I cannot recommend enough to put some dielectric grease on the electrical connections, the grinding pen does a great job cleaning the connections but that newly exposed metal will just oxide again. Dielectric grease will stop the oxidation and keep water out at the same time!

KZbin must be working today Adam because you were not automatically sent to the spam folder. I'm going to pin this comment as (like always) there is so much useful info that you share here. You really are a master of your trade! I wish you lived that little bit closer to me as I would have loved to show you the car and you could talk me and the camera through the different parts underneath and what your eyes would see that mine wouldn't. Thanks for the continued help on these videos 👍 I'll have to add your name to the car 😂 what should I write?

@@Mymatevince @Mymatevince I would love to come down & give your a hand and some pointers not to keen on that ULEZ charge though 😄 I will leave it up to you Vince on writing my name, I would love to see you get it through an M.O.T. I know you probably want to do even more to it before taking it for M.O.T but I would take it now. You will then know where you stand with the car, if there is something major like structural damage for example that is uneconomical to repair then you can assess if you want to continue spending money on it. I would hate to see you put even more blood, sweat & tears into her along with the considerable amount of money you have spent for you not to be able to get her back on the road. I forgot to mention about the battery, Exide which is the brand of battery you currently have is in the top 5 battery manufacturers in the world. If I was looking for a top quality replacement it would either be an Exide, Varta or Yuasa. I used to fit Bosch but I had many failures under warranty so I don't fit them any more. Now that battery has obviously been replaced from the original that was fitted when the car was manufactured but was it replaced with the correct battery? Car batteries have box numbers like 063 which is a very common battery size but what you have got to pay attention to is the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) & the Ah (Amp Hours) For example you can get an 063 battery with 400 CCA and 40Ah or you can get on 063 battery with 800 CCA & 80Ah. They will both be the same physical size but their performance varies dramatically. You need to find out what CCA & Ah Rolls Royce specified and then buy a battery that has the same or exceeds the CCA & Ah's Rolls Royce specified. You will usually be limited by how much space you have as the larger the CCA and AH generally the battery gets physically bigger and you only have so much room to fit it in the battery compartment. Does the battery look small for the size of the battery compartment? If so I bet you someone has just purchased a smaller battery which is was also cheaper as they did not want to spend the money for the correct size battery. The box size of a battery is determined by the length, width & height of the box the cells are in. Many people measure the battery and then fit the cheapest they kind find which leads to problems down the road like hard starting or the battery going flat. As you know that engine takes some power to turn over and has enough interior lights for a runway so skimping on a battery will only lead to headaches. I could go on about different battery chemistry's like AGM but, just go for a bog standard lead acid battery and save the money. It was designed & built with a lead acid battery so stick with what the manufacturer specified & fitted. Looking on Varta's website they list an 063 battery for the Rolls with 630 CCA & 70 Ah (Blue Dynamic 570 413 063) For Yuassa they list a battery with 630 CCA & 72Ah (YBX3069) or premium option with 650 CCA & 75Ah (YBX5069) Finally Exide list a battery with 540 CCA & 70Ah (Excell EB705) or a premium option with 630 CCA & 75Ah (Premium EA755) I would go with the largest CCA & Ah you can afford as having headroom is never a bad thing. Hope this helps.

Chances are the bit touched up with the pen was too small to affect reflectivity and beam pattern. I guess you won't really know until you give it a try. On the main beam, foil tape will affect the beam pattern. The side markers don't need to be bright, as long as they are on. The foil should be fine on them, but I'd watch that the adhesive doesn't let go with heat.
@kuchenblechmafiagmbh1381 Жыл бұрын
Just a hint about the "1,2%" it's the forward inclination of the low/dipped beam, you can simply calculate it for example the middle of your headlights is exactly 50 cm high, you car is leveled out and you put it in front of a wall exactly 5 metres away, the sharp border from bright to dark has to be at a height of 44 centimetres (1,2/1.2% of 500 centimetres makes 6 centimetres you have to subtract from the height of the headlights). You may do it roughly with that method (and mark the height with some tape) or go to a DIY car workshop where they should have a "beamsetter" device. Hella (together with Automotive Lighting and Valeo one of the large suppliers for vehicle lighting) also provides instructions for the adjustment (not sure if I can post a link, so google for "Hella headlamp adjustment"). And in most countries (except the US where they also can have things like red turn indicators - that's also the case in South Korea, on some Hyundai/Kia vehicles like the Kona and Ioniq 5 here in europe you see that their rear turn indicator is separate in the lower rear area where also safety reflectors and back-up/reverse lights and rear fog lamp are placed and not together with the main rear light like most others do, it was kind of an afterthought in their design process) the low beam is asymmetric for LHD or RHD, so it shines further on your side of the road but less on the opposite to avoid blinding the oncoming traffic. The beam consists of two parts, a plain section and then a wedge that rises: In Britain (and Japan, Australia, India etc.) the wedge is on the left and in countries with right-hand drive it's on the right. On most modern vehicles with advanced Xenon (late 2000s also often called "Bi-Xenon" - because early Xenon headlights were just for low-beam and the high-beam was still halogen/incandescent - because Xenon needed some time for ignition but the high beam/flash has to be available instantly (that's why also most cars with pop-up headlights have their high-beam separate in the front bumper - you don't have time to pop them up for flashing) they went forward with some optic things like a shutter/aperture to form the light and achieve both from just a single Xenon arc lamp) and LED lighting these stickers you had to put onto your headlights are now obsolete, you can often change a setting in the vehicles' menu (my parents got a 2016 Touran Mk II (5T) with LED headlights and there's a setting in the menu for changing the headlights' beam to LHD) and you still would need to kinda calibrate them but most of these headlights now use height sensors at the suspension to auto-level the headlights, so you wouldn't need to setup the forward inclination and also don't have a wheel for adjusting the headlights lower if your car is loaded anymore, only some (re-)calibration of the sensors might be necessary.

Not sure if aluminium tape is a good idea, Vince. The reason is because halogens get very hot and I imagine inside the light unit it will get hot as an oven and the adhesive may get unstuck. Perhaps the adhesive is not rated for those types of high temperatures. I don’t know. But I do know Rustoleum does a mirror paint that actually turns glass or plastic into a mirror. It's called Rustoleum Mirror effect. Also those fins inside the bottom and top of the headlight help refract the light before being split up through the lens. At MOT they check the beam pattern and height to make sure it's within spec which is probably what that 1,2% is. I enjoy your roller videos you have come so far. It's look less and less sorry for itself with your Vincey touch! I think everything you have done so far is a top job.

Back in late 90's early 2000's I had a treasure little gimmick, someone I knew at Hurn airport gave me a complete roll of airframe tape which looked like thicker aluminium foil but it had a epoxy backing with filaments in the epoxy so it also was a fibreglass and once activated by exposure to the air, this stuff set rock hard like steel. The amounts of cars I done up and got MoT's on with this stuff as it turned sad rusty sills into fine brand new factory fresh sills, being structural strong as well prob just as strong as the metal that should have been there. Bit of stonechip over the top and MoT man is all smiles.

I really enjoy this video series, my highest respect for your work. With the corroded electrical contacts, contact resistance is also an issue. If a lot of current goes through them and there is a high contact resistance due to corrosion, defect or whatever, a cable can also fry or something can break 😄 One should also always have in mind. The aluminium foil can also be smoothed with a suitable tool. There are pens with a jade tip that are used for gilding, for example. I did this with a thick pen with a round plastic cap. Afterwards it reflects even more.

Vince in future use buytl sealant strip tape to seal headlights, you got lucky with your lights splitting so easily with silicone, must have not bonded well to the housing, usually silicon makes glass removal a nightmare. Buytl is resealable with a bit of heat. I made the mistake of using silicone once before, so learned the hard way. Vince, when you were starting the engine, the cadence was quite uneven. That is typically a sign of low compression on one or more cylinders, which, in turn, can be a sign of mechanical engine damage, such as a blown head gasket, valve train damage, or piston rings that are not sealing, among several other causes. Low compression would explain why it was misfiring (running rough) after it started. Another possible cause of low compression is so-called cylinder wash, which would indicate that fuel or coolant is leaking into one or more cylinders while the car is off. That can keep the piston rings from sealing until the liquid fuel or coolant burns off. Cylinder wash would be consistent with hars starting and with a misfire that goes away shortly after the engine starts, although it is not the only cause that would be consistent with those symptoms. I am not an expert in engine mechanics, so I could be totally wrong, but if it were my car, I would want to check for low compression when the engine is cold before spending additional money on fixing the car. Scanner Danner just did a video about a car with similar symptoms where he talks about uneven cranking cadence. Of course there are many other videos on KZbin about diagnosing and repairing low compression issues. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5qQp5SOiMqooacsi=H_MqM1-iJtNYKYL_

Hi Vince, thanks for taking in account my comment about the reflector. The best way to see if it's working right is to test the lights on a wall at night but you need to be 2-3 meters away. Check the lower part of the beam projection and compare. If the light is the same then it should pass the MOT. Also there higher part of the beams will have a cut-out (wich is different for RHD cars). That is why you put those stickers on the reflector headlights when travelling from France to UK and viceversa. Adjustment for the beam is on both axis, also, some cars have height adjustment for the high-beam (mine has it)

Not sure if it’s the same on yours but some I’ve seen from this era. The sidelights can be done on each side independently by putting that side indicator on. So to get left sidelights only you put left indicator on. Unsure if this is your model but as I said. Others do have this feature. Or sometimes there’s a direction switch. Worth a look.

I mentioned on a previous video that you could use aluminium tape (and others may have done so, too) but it looks like you worked that out on your own. I will just mention again, though, that aluminium tape _can_ be polished, even though it's quite thin - if you find that it's not quite reflective enough a little time with some polish may well bring it up that little bit to get it at as shiny as you'd want it to be.

47:57 For the seat belts you have the option to only buy the straps and stitch / attach it back into the original clips / mechanical retractor. Its more laborious and you will need a good sewing machine. You have to use high strength nylon line. Another option is add a patch over the part that is damage. It works as long as that part doesn't go true anything that will make it get stuck when made ticker. Still need a sewing machine and can be a eye sore.

Vince, try Dr. Beckmann Colour Run Remover. It works on clothing so may work on the wool carpets in your Roller.

Vince, if in not mistaken, that carpet is all woven wool. If it were me, I would dye all the boot carpet black.
@n124lp Жыл бұрын
If you want to dye it a lighter color, then bleach it first to get an even tint.

It really is amazing how much this car has improved since you got it. Have you ever gone back to the 1st video and compared things now to the original walk around? You've done sooo much work! Anyway, still loving this series. :)

PS. I'm curious about something. Has KZbin's efforts to insure ad delivery improved your ad revenue? I suppose it may be too soon to tell? Anyway, I hope it at least results in bigger paychecks for content creators. You guys work hard to keep this platform in content, you really do. :)

This has been a brilliant series and I can’t wait to see it MOT’d and on the road again, there’s definitely something classy about it. Got to say if it was mine I would replace the blue led in the speedo cluster and switch back to an incandescent but it’s not my car.

Fabric wash as shampoo is available in bottles and is cheap. Just apply with with water, a sponge and the dirt runs off. Smells good and can be used on furniture.

A useful cleaner (carpets, jumpers, shirts even) is hand sanitiser, basically because it is alcohol based - very useful, but make sure that you use the alcohol based type.

Good job on the lights, Vince! Looks like the cap of the indicator is now lining with the side of your car, in the last episode it was still outside the body. Also the glasses of the indicator and front light are now nice and close lined next to each other.

There seem to be quite a number of UK companies who do seat belt re-webbing, considering how difficult to find correct belt and its cost it may be much more reasonable alternative. And you will get modern strong fabric, not used or stored in unknown conditions for years.

When my father's seatbelt got stiff from dirt and grime, I removed the whole set and removed the entire seatbelt from the mechanism, and chucked them (all 5 of them) into the washing machine. I never forget that thick black liquid coming out from the drain pipe :) We had no issues ever since.

I had a hole in my rear light which came up as an advisory for a few years before finally failing MOT because the reflective panel around the light had deterioriated by 50%.

I have had very bad experiences with Bosch batteries. I bought a "high-class" Bosch battery for my car and after a year it was broken. It was replaced under warranty with a new one, but the new one also broke after a year. Then I asked for a replacement battery of a different brand and I have been driving for many years without any problems.

The big chunk of metal for the seat belt bolts is a load spreader, so that the bolt heads don’t just rip through the thin metal of the bodywork in an accident.

The green light would blink if you needed boost mode, to activate boost mode you typically need to hold the button for 3 seconds and then you have 15-30 seconds to start the car. When you connect the booster and power it on wait 15-30 seconds before trying to start the car so it has some time to charge the car's battery a bit.
